Abstract— This study serves as a proof‐of‐concept for the technique of using visible‐near infrared (VNIR), short‐wavelength infrared (SWIR), and thermal infrared (TIR) spectroscopic observations to map impact‐exposed subsurface lithologies and stratigraphy on Earth or Mars. The topmost layer, three subsurface layers and undisturbed outcrops of the target sequence exposed just 10 km to the northeast of the 23 km diameter Haughton impact structure (Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada) were mapped as distinct spectral units using Landsat 7 ETM+ (VNIR/SWIR) and ASTER (VNIR/SWIR/TIR) multispectral images. Spectral mapping was accomplished by using standard image contrast‐stretching algorithms. Both spectral matching and deconvolution algorithms were applied to image‐derived ASTER TIR emissivity spectra using spectra from a library of laboratory‐measured spectra of minerals (Arizona State University) and whole‐rocks (Ward's). These identifications were made without the use of a priori knowledge from the field (i.e., a “blind” analysis). The results from this analysis suggest a sequence of dolomitic rock (in the crater rim), limestone (wall), gypsum‐rich carbonate (floor), and limestone again (central uplift). These matched compositions agree with the lithologic units and the pre‐impact stratigraphic sequence as mapped during recent field studies of the Haughton impact structure by Osinski et al. (2005a). Further conformation of the identity of image‐derived spectra was confirmed by matching these spectra with laboratory‐measured spectra of samples collected from Haughton. The results from the “blind” remote sensing methods used here suggest that these techniques can also be used to understand subsurface lithologies on Mars, where ground truth knowledge may not be generally available. 相似文献

Abstract— Microbeam studies of Martian meteorites Dar al Gani (DaG) 476 and Allan Hills (ALH) 77005 have been conducted to identify potential causes of disequilibrium exhibited in their Sm‐Nd isotopic systematics. Olivine and maskelynite mineral fractions on the DaG 476 isochron are displaced relative to their positions as dictated by measured mineral compositions. The olivine mineral fractions from ALH 77005 not only have a relatively low Sm/Nd ratio, but appear to contain an unradiogenic component that shifts the olivine mineral fraction off the isochron defined by the pyroxene and maskelynite mineral fractions. Trace components such as melt inclusions, impact melt, high‐Si mesostasis, and altered olivine were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, quantitative electron microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectrometry to determine their potential for disturbing the isotopic systematics of the mineral fractions, assuming that the mineral fractions were not completely pure. Mixing models indicate that the presence of melt inclusions in the DaG 476 olivine mineral fraction lowered its Sm/Nd ratio. The maskelynite mineral fraction contains a related but more evolved mesostasis component that raised the Sm/Nd ratio of the fraction. The position of two olivine mineral fractions below the ALH 77005 isochron is interpreted to reflect small additions of impact melt with a light rare earth element enriched pattern and a non‐indigenous, unradiogenic Nd component. Furthermore, the presence of rare earth elements in olivine and maskelynite from both igneous and non‐igneous components such as melt inclusions, mesostasis, and impact melt is observed on a fine (<30 μm) scale. Despite the addition of this material, the Sm‐Nd ages are not affected. This study demonstrates that detailed mineral separation procedures as employed by modern geochronology laboratories permit reliable ages to be derived from shocked and altered samples. 相似文献

Abstract— A large (7 mm in diameter) Allende type B inclusion has a typical bulk composition and a unique structure: a fassaite‐rich mantle enclosing a melilite‐rich core. The core and mantle have sharply contrasting textures. In the mantle, coarse (?1 mm across), subhedral fassaite crystals enclose radially oriented melilite laths about 500 μm long that occur at the inclusion rim. The core consists of blocky melilite grains 20–50 μm across and poikilitically enclosed in anhedral fassaite grains that are optically continuous over ?1 mm. Another unique feature of this inclusion is that melilite laths also extend from the core into the mantle. Fassaite in both the core and mantle is very rich in fine‐grained (1–10 μm) spinel. The rim laths are normally zoned (Åk30–70) inward from the rim of the inclusion with reverse zoning over the last ?200 μm to crystallize. A very wide range of melilite compositions is found in the core of the inclusion, where gehlenitic grains (Åk5–12) occur. These grains are enclosed in strongly zoned (Åk15–70) overgrowths. The gehlenitic cores and innermost parts of the overgrowths are Na2O‐free, but the outer parts of the overgrowths are not. In the laths at the rim, Na2O decreases inward from the rim, then increases. Fassaite in the core has the same range of Ti contents as that in the mantle: 2–9 wt% TiO2 + Ti2O3. Two melting events are required to account for the features of this inclusion. In the first event, the precursor assemblage is heated to ?1400 °C and melts except for gehlenitic (Åk5–12) melilite and some spinel. These grains become concentrated in the core. During cooling, Na2O‐free melilite nucleates at the rim of the inclusion and on the relict grains in the core. After open system secondary alteration, the inclusion is heated again, but only to ?1260 °C. Melilite more gehlenitic than Åk40 does not melt. During cooling, Na2O‐bearing melilite crystallizes as small, blocky grains and laths in the core and as overgrowths on relict grains in the core and at the rim. Eventually melilite co‐crystallizes with fassaite, leading to the reverse zoning observed in the laths. The coexistence in this inclusion of Na‐free and Na‐bearing melilite, plus a positive correlation between Na2O and åkermanite contents in melilite in an inclusion with a bulk Mg isotopic composition that is mass‐fractionated in favor of the heavy isotopes, are both consistent with at least two melting events. Several other recently described coarse‐grained inclusions also have features consistent with a sequence of early, high‐temperature melting, secondary alteration, and remelting at a lower temperature, suggesting that remelting of refractory inclusions was a common occurrence in the solar nebula. 相似文献

Abstract— We present concentration and isotopic composition of He, Ne, and Ar in ten chondrites from the Nullarbor region in Western Australia as well as the concentrations of 84Ke, 129Xe, and 132Xe. From the measured cosmogenic 14C concentrations (Jull et al. 1995), shielding‐corrected production rates of 14C are deduced using cosmogenic 22Ne/21Ne ratios. For shielding conditions characterized by 22Ne/21Ne >1.10, this correction becomes significant and results in shorter terrestrial ages. The exposure ages of the ten Nullarbor chondrites are in the range of values usually observed in ordinary chondrites. Some of the meteorites have lost radiogenic gases as well as cosmogenic 3He. Most of the analyzed specimens show additional trapped Ar, Kr, and Xe of terrestrial origin. The incorporation of these gases into weathering products is common in chondrites from hot deserts. 相似文献

GJ 569Bab is the first brown dwarf binary for which the mass of each component has been derived by solving the astrometric and spectroscopic orbit of the pair, i.e., independently of any theoretical assumption. This allows us to test the predictions of the various evolutionary models available in the literature. Particularly interesting are the predictions of lithium depletion for the mass (0.08–0.05M⊙) and likely age (300–800 Myr) of the substellar components. High‐resolution optical spectra of GJ 569B (the pair is not resolved) obtained with HIRES at the Keck telescope show that there has been significant lithium depletion in both components. The general solution of the Henon–Heiles system is approximated inside a domain of the (x, C) of initial conditions (C is the energy constant). The method applied is that described by Poincaré as ‘the only “crack” permitting penetration into
the non-integrable problems’ and involves calculation of a dense set of families of periodic solutions that covers the solution
space of the problem. In the case of the Henon–Heiles potential we calculated the families of periodic solutions that re-enter
after 1–108 oscillations. The density of the set of such families is defined by a pre-assigned parameter ε (Poincaré parameter),
which ascertains that at least one periodic solution is computed and available within a distance ε from any point of the domain
(x, C) for which the approximate general solution computed. The approximate general solution presented here corresponds to ε =
0.07. The same solution is further improved by “zooming” into four square sub-domain of (x, C), i.e. by computing sufficient number of families that reduce the density parameter to ε = 0.003. Further zooming to reduce
the density parameter, say to ε = 10−6, or even smaller, although easily performable in both areas occupied by stable as well as unstable solutions, was found unnecessary.
The stability of all members of each and all families computed was calculated and presented in this paper for both the large
solution domain and for the sub-domains. The correspondence between areas of the approximate general solution occupied by
stable periodic solutions and Poincaré sections with well-aligned section points and also correspondence between areas occupied
by unstable solutions and Poincaré sections with randomly scattered section points is shown by calculating such sections.
All calculations were performed using the Runge-Kutta (R-K) 8th order direct integration method and the large output received,
consisting of many thousands of families is saved as “Atlas of the General Solution of the Henon–Heiles Problem,” including
their stability and is available at request. It is concluded that approximation of the general solution of this system is
straightforward and that the chaotic character of its Poincaré sections imposes no limitations or difficulties. 相似文献

Results of three-colour VRI CCD photometry are presented obtained during 11 nights in 2001. Twelve new minima timings are derived. The eclipse depth
decreases with wavelength, being equal to 1.28, 1.13 and 1.02 for V, R and I, respectively. The instrumental magnitudes and colours are tabulated for the mid-eclipse, out-of-eclipse part and the eclipsed
component. The V−R colour of the eclipsed component of emission is by 0.22 mag bluer than that for mid-eclipse, indicating a much higher temperature

The processes of the solar radiation extinction in deep layers of the Venus atmosphere in a wavelength range from 0.44 to 0.66 µm have been considered. The spectra of the solar radiation scattered in the atmosphere of Venus at various altitudes above the planetary surface measured by the Venera-11 entry probe in December 1978 are used as observational data. The problem of the data analysis is solved by selecting an atmospheric model; the discrete-ordinate method is applied in calculations. For the altitude interval from 2–10 km to 36 km, the altitude and spectral dependencies of the volume coefficient of true absorption have been obtained. We report multicolour photometric observations of the 2003 eclipse of the long-period (5.6 yr) eclipsing binary EE Cep. Measurements
were obtained with ten telescopes at eight observatories in four countries. In most cases, UBV(RI)C broad band filters have been used. The light curve shape shows that the obscuring body is an almost dark disk around a low-luminosity
central object. However, variations of the colour indices during the eclipse indicate that the obscuring body emits a considerable
