Abstract— Five new ordinary chondrites from Roosevelt County, New Mexico, USA, have been assigned to a chemical group, petrologic type and shock stage. All five are moderately to heavily weathered. They are: RC 073, H5(S2); RC 074, L5(S3); RC 076, L4(S3); RC 077 , L4(S2); RC 078, L4(S2).  相似文献

Stirred flow-through experiments were conducted for the first time with planktonic biogenic silica (BSi). We investigated the dissolution kinetics of uncleaned and chemically cleaned BSi collected in ocean surface water, sediment traps, and sediments from the Norwegian Sea, the Southern Ocean, and the Arabian Sea. The solubility at 2°C is rather constant (1000 to 1200 μM). The dissolution rates are, however, highly variable, declining with water depth, and phytoplankton reactivity is two to three orders of magnitude higher than pure siliceous oozes. The reactivity decrease correlates well with an increase in the integrated peak intensity ratios of Si-O-Si/Si-OH measured by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The removal of organic or inorganic coatings enhance the reactivity by at least an order of magnitude. Atomic Al/Si ratios of 0.03 to 0.08 in sedimentary diatom frustules decrease significantly to 0.02 as a result of removal of inorganic coatings and detritals present. Near equilibrium, the dissolution rates exhibit a linear dependence on the degree of undersaturation. At higher degrees of undersaturation—that is, at low concentrations of dissolved silica—the dissolution rates of uncleaned samples define a nonlinear trend.The nonlinear kinetics imply that the dissolution of natural BSi is strongly accelerated in silica-depleted surface waters. The FTIR results suggest that internal condensation reactions reduce the amount of surface reaction sites and are partly responsible for the reactivity decrease with depth. The high content of Al in sedimentary BSi is likely caused by precipitation of dissolved silica with Al dissolved from minerals in sediment. Nonbiogenic silica as coatings or detritals are partly responsible for the solubility and reactivity decrease of BSi in sediments. One order of magnitude different rate constants measured in Norwegian Sea and Southern Ocean sediment trap material support the so-called opal paradox—that is, high BSi accumulation rates in sediments in spite of low BSi production rates in surface waters of the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Deformation fabrics in Proterozoic/Cambrian granitic rocks of the Çine nappe, and mid-Triassic granites of the Bozdag nappe constrain aspects of the tectonometamorphic evolution of the Menderes nappes of southwest Turkey. Based on intrusive contacts and structural criteria, the Proterozoic/Cambrian granitic rocks of the Çine nappe are subdivided into older orthogneisses and younger metagranites. The deformation history of the granitic rocks documents two major deformation events. An early, pre-Alpine deformation event (DPA) during amphibolite-facies metamorphism affected only the orthogneisses and produced predominantly top-to-NE shear-sense indicators associated with a NE-trending stretching lineation. The younger metagranites are deformed both by isolated shear zones, and by a major shear zone along the southern boundary of the Çine submassif. We refer to this Alpine deformation event as DA3. DA3 shear zones are associated with a N-trending stretching lineation, which formed during greenschist-facies metamorphism. Kinematic indicators associated with this stretching lineation reveal a top-to-south sense of shear. The greenschist-facies shear zones cut the amphibolite-facies structures in the orthogneisses. 207Pb/206Pb dating of magmatic zircons from a metagranite, which crosscuts orthogneiss containing amphibolite-facies top-to-NE shear-sense indicators, shows that DPA occurred before 547.2ǃ.0 Ma. Such an age is corroborated by the observation that mid-Triassic granites of the Çine and Bozdag nappes lack DPA structures. The younger, top-to-south fabrics formed most likely as a result of top-to-south Alpine nappe stacking during the collision of the Sakarya continent with Anatolia in the Eocene.  相似文献

Dendrochronological analysis of fossil wood from Two Creeks, Wisconsin, reveals that the Two Creekan Intetstade lasted at least 252 yr. The sites crossdated by tree rings cover an area of about 970 km2. AMS determinations from the beginning and end of the chronology open a 14 C time window for the episode from 12,050 to 11,750 yr B.P. The interval is contemporaneous with the Older Dryas in northern Europe. The development of a forest covering at least 970 km2 on the western shore of Lake Michigan indicates a water level about as low as in modern times. Glacier retreat must have opened drainage channels either through the Straits of Mackinac or via the Indian River Plateau into the eastern lakes. The beginning of the tree-ring chronology coincides with the peak of meltwater pulse 1A at 12,000 yr B.P. Increased amounts of meltwater seem to have disturbed the heat exchange between the waters and the atmosphere in the North Atlantic off the Gulf of St. Lawrence or affected the δ18O-ratio of the evaporation, causing the climatic or isotopic reversal of the Older Dryas in Greenland and northern Europe.  相似文献

The accumulation of geographical scholarship since the late nineteenth century has encouraged a fusion of historical and geographical skills and interests. In the process, the study of the history of geographical thought should continue to strengthen its central position within the subject as a whole. Yet at the same time, research into this modern era insists upon a more generous incorporation of significant contributions to environmental appraisal and landscape authorship developed by government and non-government actors, and a consideration of vernacular or non-scientific modes of inquiry. The Commission's work draws attention to these important trends and lays the foundation for a broader discussion of their implications.  相似文献

Summary Major Baltic inflows (from the Kattegat) represent the only possibility for deep water renewal in the Baltic Sea that is generally characterised by stable stratification. Such an inflow occurred in January 1993 for the first time in 16 years. Observations were made by a moored station at Darß Sill and, for the first time since investigations into major Baltic inflows began, by a research vessel. In addition, the event has been simulated in an operational model.

Zusammenfassung Für die im allgemeinen stabil geschichtete Ostsee bilden Salzwassereinbrüche (aus dem Kattegat) die einzige Möglichkeit zur Erneuerung des Tiefenwassers. Ein solcher Salzwassereinbruch ereignete sich nach 16 Jahren Unterbrechung erst wieder im Januar 1993. Dieser Vorgang wurde durch Messungen von einer permanenten Station auf der Darßer Schwelle und — erstmals in der Geschichte der Erforschung von Salzwassereinbrüchen —einem Forschungsschiff registriert. Außerdem liegt eine numerische Simulation mit einem operationellen Modell vor.

Résumé L'apport d'eau salée en provenance du Kattegat reste la seule possibilité de renouvellement des eaux profondes des couches stables de la mer Baltique. Un telle insertion d'eau salée ne s'est produite qu'au mois de janvier 1993 après une interruption de 16 ans. Ce processus a été enregistré par des mesures d'une station permanente (Darßer Schwelle) et, pour la première fois dans l'histoire de l'étude des insertions d'eau salée, par un navire scientifique. En outre une simulation numérique à l'aide d'un modèle opérationnel est présentée.

Zusammenfassung Es werden die tiergeographischen Unterschiede zwischen dem mediterranen und dem nordischen Mittelkambrium besprochen. Die Faunen der wichtigsten Fundgebiete werden kurz auf ihre tiergeographischen Beziehungen untersucht. Überwiegend nordisch ist die Zusammensetzung der nordeuropäischen Faunen (Skandinavien, England), sowie der älteren Faunen des Frankenwaldes und von Doberlug. Überwiegend mediterran sind die Faunen des Mittelmeer-Gebietes (S-Frankreich, Spanien, Sardinien, Marokko), Böhmens, sowie die jüngeren Faunen des Frankenwaldes und von Doberlug. - Als Ursachen für die tiergeographischen Unterschiede werden Verschiedenheiten der Lebensbedingungen (Klima?) innerhalb eines zusammenhängenden Meeres wahrscheinlich gemacht.  相似文献
