A method to analyze imaging radio data on solar flares   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Grechnev  V.V. 《Solar physics》2003,213(1):103-110
Microwave imaging data are widely used in analysis of solar flares. To identify essential features and study their behavior, one has to deal with large data sets of hundreds of frames. This allows a single image, a variance map, to represent the overall dynamics of the event. A method is presented that allows investigation of the detected positions of sources in both Stokes I and V using the analysis of variance maps, combined difference images, and total flux time profiles.  相似文献

This is the first of four companion papers, which comprehensively analyze a complex eruptive event of 18 November 2003 in active region (AR) 10501 and the causes of the largest Solar Cycle 23 geomagnetic storm on 20 November 2003. Analysis of a complete data set, not considered before, reveals a chain of eruptions to which hard X-ray and microwave bursts responded. A filament in AR 10501 was not a passive part of a larger flux rope, as usually considered. The filament erupted and gave origin to a coronal mass ejection (CME). The chain of events was as follows: i) a presumable eruption at 07:29 UT accompanied by a not reported M1.2 class flare probably associated with the onset of a first southeastern CME (CME1), which most likely is not responsible for the superstorm; ii) a confined eruption (without a CME) at 07:41 UT (M3.2 flare) that destabilized the large filament; iii) the filament acceleration around 07:56 UT; iv) the bifurcation of the eruptive filament that transformed into a large “cloud”; v) an M3.9 flare in AR 10501 associated to this transformation. The transformation of the filament could be due to the interaction of the eruptive filament with the magnetic field in the neighborhood of a null point, located at a height of about 100 Mm above the complex formed by ARs 10501, 10503, and their environment. The CORONAS-F/SPIRIT telescope observed the cloud in 304 Å as a large Y-shaped darkening, which moved from the bifurcation region across the solar disk to the limb. The masses and kinematics of the cloud and the filament were similar. Remnants of the filament were not clearly observed in the second southwestern CME (CME2), previously regarded as a source of the 20 November geomagnetic storm. These facts do not support a simple scenario, in which the interplanetary magnetic cloud is considered as a flux rope formed from a structure initially associated with the pre-eruption filament in AR 10501. Observations suggest a possible additional eruption above the bifurcation region close to solar disk center between 08:07 and 08:17 UT, which could be the source of the 20 November superstorm.  相似文献

Plasma with a temperature close to the chromospheric one is ejected in solar eruptions. Such plasma can occult some part of emission of compact sources in active regions as well as quiet solar areas. Absorption phenomena can be observed in the microwave range as the so-called “negative bursts” and also in the He II 304 ? line. The paper considers three eruptive events associated with rather powerful flares. Parameters of absorbing material of an eruption are estimated from multi-frequency records of a “negative burst” in one event. “Destruction” of an eruptive filament and its dispersion like a cloud over a huge area observed as a giant depression of the 304 ? line emission has been revealed in a few events. One of the three currently known events is considered in this paper. One more of the events considered here is a possible candidate for such events.  相似文献

Large-scale hot features were detected and observed several times high in the solar corona in the high-temperature Mg XII line (T = 5–20 MK, T max = 10 MK) with the soft X-ray telescope of the SPIRIT instrumentation complex onboard the CORONAS-F spacecraft. These features look like a spider up to 300000 km in size and live up to a few days. Their bright cores observed at heights were from 0.1 to 0.3 solar radii are connected with active regions by darker legs, giant loops. These features are disposed above arcades, which are simultaneously observed in cooler emission lines sensitive to temperatures of 1 to 2 MK. For the core of such a feature observed December 28–29, 2001, Zhitnik et al. (2003a) estimated an electron temperature of 10 MK and a number density of n e ≈ 1010 cm?3. A high activity and an association with eruptive phenomena were found for such features in continuous (up to 20-day) observations with a cadence of 0.6–1.7 min. In the present paper, we discuss the relation of such features to coronal structures, which are known from previous studies. We identify such off-limb features observed with SPIRIT on October 22, November 12, and December 28–29, 2001, with hot upper parts of post-eruptive arcades. The results of multifrequency analysis of these features based on the data obtained in various spectral ranges by different instruments (Yohkoh/SXT, SOHO/EIT, SOHO/LASCO, Nobeyama and SSRT radioheliographs) are briefly discussed. We address the physical conditions of the long-term existence of giant hot coronal structures. It is demonstrated that the post-eruptive energy release must be prolonged and the condition β ? 1 is not satisfied in these structures. It is argued that the so-called “standard flare model” should be better considered as a “standard post-eruptive energy release model.”  相似文献

A series of observations of Mercury were performed at the Special Astrophysical Observatory using the short-exposure method to image a hitherto unknown part of the Hermean surface. Several thousand electronic frames of the planet were taken during its morning elongation in the period from November 20–24, 2006. The phase angle of Mercury varied from 103° to 80°, and the interval of planetocentric longitudes observed spanned from 260 to 350°W. Observations were made with a CCD camera attached to the 1-m Zeiss-1000 Ritchey-Chretien telescope operating with a KS-19 filter (short-wavelength border at 700 nm). The Hermean surface is known to be almost impossible to resolve on ordinary images. A reduction of a large number of frames taken with millisecond-long exposures made it possible to obtain a rather sharp image of the observed part of the Hermean surface. One of the primary aims of new observations was to have a general outline of the basin earlier found by one of the authors (L. Ksanfomaliti). We are the first to image this giant feature. The size of its inner part exceeds that of the largest lunar Mare — Mare Imbrium, however, unlike the latter the studied basin is of impact origin. The synthesized images reveal a number of large impact craters of various ages, as well as smaller features. The highest resolution achieved corresponds to the diffraction limit for the instrument employed, or about 100 km on the Hermean surface.  相似文献

In the descent of the automatic interplanetary station Mars 6, after parachute deployment, an analysis was carried out by means of a mass spectrometer, the analyzer of which was pumped out by a getter-ion pump. Unfortunately, mass spectra were not obtained. But during vehicle descent on a parachute tether, the pump discharge current was registered. The dynamics of the pump current at the end of descent operations imply that an inert gas is a basic component of the Martian atmosphere, along with CO2. Laboratory post-experiment calibrations of other getter-ion pumps, performed with various mixtures of CO2 and argon, result in a probable value of the argon content in the Martian atmosphere of 35 ± 10% by volume.  相似文献

Based on data from the SONG and SPR-N multichannel hard electromagnetic radiation detectors onboard the CORONAS-F space observatory and the X-ray monitors onboard GOES satellites, we have distinguished the thermal and nonthermal components in the X-ray spectrum of an extreme solar flare on January 20, 2005. In the impulsive flare phase determined from the time of the most efficient electron and proton acceleration, we have obtained parameters of the spectra for both components and their variations in the time interval 06:43–06:54 UT. The spectral index in the energy range 0.2–2 MeV for a single-power-law spectrum of accelerated electrons is shown to have been close to 3.4 for most of the time interval under consideration. We have determined the time dependence of the lower energy cutoff in the energy spectrum of nonthermal photons E γ0(t) at which the spectral flux densities of the thermal and nonthermal components become equal. The power deposited by accelerated electrons into the flare volume has been estimated using the thick-target model under two assumptions about the boundary energy E 0 of the electron spectrum: (i) E 0 is determined by E γ0(t) and (ii) E 0 is determined by the characteristic heated plasma energy (≈5kT (t)). The reality of the first assumption is proven by the fact that plasma cooling sets in at a time when the radiative losses begin to prevail over the power deposited by electrons only in this case. Comparison of the total energy deposited by electrons with a boundary energy E γ0(t) with the thermal energy of the emitting plasma in the time interval under consideration has shown that the total energy deposited by accelerated electrons at the beginning of the impulsive flare phase before 06:47 UT exceeds the thermal plasma energy by a factor of 1.5–2; subsequently, these energies become approximately equal and are ~(4–5) × 1030 erg under the assumption that the filling factor is 0.5–0.6.  相似文献

We show that a Moreton wave, an “EIT wave,” and a type II radio burst observed during a solar flare of July 13, 2004, might have been a manifestation of a single front of a decelerating shock wave, which appeared in an active region (AR) during a filament eruption. We propose describing a quasi-spheroidal wave propagating upward and along the solar surface by using relations known from a theory of a point-like explosion in a gas whose density changes along the radius according to a power law. By applying this law to fit the drop in density of the coronal plasma enveloping the solar active region, we first managed to bring the measured positions and velocities of surface Moreton wave and “EIT wave” into correspondence with the observed frequency drift rate of the meter type II radio burst. The exponent of the vertical coronal density falloff is selected by fitting the power law to the Newkirk and Saito empirical distributions in the height range of interest. Formal use of such a dependence in the horizontal direction with a different exponent appears to be reasonable up to distances of less than 200 Mm around the eruption center. It is possible to assume that the near-surface shock wave weakens when leaving this radius and finally the active region, entering the region of the quiet Sun where the coronal plasma density and the fast-mode speed are almost constant along the horizontal.  相似文献
