Ozone has been observed in elevated concentrations by satellites over areas previously believed to be background. There is meteorological evidence, that these ozone plumes found over the Atlantic Ocean originate from vegetation fires on the African continent.In a previous study (DECAFE-88), we have investigated ozone and assumed precursor compounds over African tropical forest regions. Our measurements revealed large photosmog layers at altitudes from 1.5 to 4 km. Both chemical and meteorological evidence point to savanna fires up to several thousand km upwind as sources.Here we describe ozone mixing ratios observed over western Africa and compare ozone production ratios from different field measurement campaigns related to vegetation burning. We find that air masses containing photosmog ingredients require several days to develop their oxidation potential, similar to what is known from air polluted by emissions from fossil fuel burning. Finally, we estimate the global ozone production due to vegetation fires and conclude that this source is comparable in strength to the stratospheric input. 相似文献

Summary Cosmic dust grains play an important role for the thermal, dynamical, and chemical structure of the interstellar medium. This is especially true for the star formation process and the late stages of stellar evolution. Dust grains determine the spectral appearance of protostars, very young stellar objects with disk-like structures as well as of evolved stars with circumstellar envelopes.In this review, we will demonstrate that solid particles in interstellar space are both agent and subject of galactic evolution. We will especially discuss the different dust populations in circumstellar envelopes, the diffuse interstellar medium, and the molecular clouds with strong emphasis on the evolutionary aspects and the metamorphosis of these populations. 相似文献

The Felbertal scheelite deposit in the Eastern Alps has been regarded as the type locality for stratabound scheelite deposits. It is hosted by a Cambro-Ordovician metavolcanic arc sequence with minor Variscan granitoids (∼ 340 Ma) in the central Tauern Window. Re–Os model ages for molybdenite from the Felbertal tungsten deposit range between ∼ 358 and ∼ 336 Ma and record several pulses of magmatic-hydrothermal-metamorphic molybdenite formation. Molybdenite ages from the K2 orebody, a scheelite-rich quartz mylonite in the Western ore field, indicate that both mineralisation and mylonite are Variscan in age and suggest that the shear zone was active for ∼ 20 million years. Early stage tungsten mineralisation (Scheelite 1) in quartzitic ores in the Eastern ore field, which is free of molybdenite, yielded very low to near blank levels of Re and Os and thus could not be dated. However, molybdenite from scheelite–quartz stringers, previously interpreted as a feeder stockwork to quartzitic scheelite ore of presumed Cambrian age, yielded Variscan Re–Os ages of ∼ 342 and ∼ 337 Ma. Dating of molybdenite contained in scheelite ores thus far provides no indication of a Cambrian component to the tungsten mineralisation. Our data are consistent with a model of either granite intrusion-related ore formation and coeval metamorphic overprint during the Early Carboniferous or, alternatively, molybdenite formation may be exclusively attributed to Variscan metamorphism (see Stein 2006). 相似文献

An approach to establish the recharge component of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has recently been proposed that uses small-diameter shallow wells installed using relatively inexpensive drilling methods such as direct push. As part of further development of that approach, a generalized procedure is presented for a technical and economic assessment of the approach’s potential in comparison to other systems. Following this procedure, the use of small-diameter wells was evaluated both experimentally and numerically for a site located in southern Styria, Austria. MAR is currently done at the site using a horizontal pipe infiltration system, and system expansion has been proposed with a target rate of 12 l/s using small-diameter wells as one possible option. A short-duration single-well field recharge experiment (recharge rate 1.3–3.5 l/s) was performed (recharge by gravity only). Numerical modeling of the injection test was used to estimate hydraulic conductivity (K). Quasi-steady-state, single-well recharge simulations for different locations, as well as a long-term transient simulation, were performed using the K value calibrated from the field injection test. Results indicate that a recharge capacity of 4.1 l/s was achievable with a maximum head rise of 0.2 m at the injection well. Finally, simulations were performed for three different well fields (4, 6 and 8 wells, respectively) designed to infiltrate a target rate of 12 l/s. The experimental and numerical assessments, supported by a cost analysis of the small-diameter wells, indicate that the small-diameter wells are a viable, cost-effective recharge approach at this and other similar sites. 相似文献

A second catalogue of equivalent widths of the interstellar 2200 Å band is presented. It is based on spectrophotometric data obtained with the TD-1 satellite and supplements a catalogue already published (paper I). Both catalogues list a total of 779 stars. The reliability of the derived parameters is analysed. There is a satisfying agreement with spectrophotometric data obtained with the OAO-2 satellite. The relationship between the equivalent width of the 2200-Å band and and the colour excess is discussed, making use of additional data for more strongly reddened stars obtained with OAO-2 and IUE. 相似文献

The data compiled for 34 very young massive compact infrared source (Becklin-Neugebauer objects) in a separately published catalogue serve as the basis for an investigation of their general properties. First, the correlations of the strength of the ice and silicate bands at 3.1 μm and 10 μm, resp., with each other and with other parameters of the sources are investigated. In accordance with theoretical expectations the strengths of both bands are not well correlated with each other. The ratio τ10/τ3 of their optical depths veries from 0.85 to 8 (and possibly up to 22). That implies for the number densities of the grains that (naked) silicate grains always are considerably more abundant than ice grains (grains with ice mantles). It follows from the discussion of the relationships between τ10, the temperature parameter of the sources, and their luminosity that relations between τ10 and temperature and possibly between τ10 and the luminosity exist. Stellar wind models for the ionized region around the embedded star are favoured after the analysis of the intensities of the hydrogen infrred emission lines and the radio continuum. The limited observational data do not yet allow a decision on a correlation between the silicate band depth and energy content and/or the velocity of the bipolar outflow detected in a number of sources. The BN objects are clearly more frequently associated with H2O masers than OH masers. The linear separations of the infrared peaks from the masers are compatible with models where the H2O masers are situated near the edges the gas-dust shells of the BN objects. 相似文献
