Many ecosystem services are in decline. Local ecological knowledge and associated practice are essential to sustain and enhance ecosystem services on the ground. Here, we focus on social or collective memory in relation to management practice that sustains ecosystem services, and investigate where and how ecological practices, knowledge and experience are retained and transmitted. We analyze such socialecological memory of allotment gardens in the Stockholm urban area, Sweden. Allotment gardens support ecosystem services such as pollination, seed dispersal and pest regulation in the broader urban landscape. Surveys and interviews were preformed over a four-year period with several hundreds of gardeners. We found that the allotment gardens function as communities-of-practice, where participation and reification interact and social–ecological memory is a shared source of resilience of the community by being both emergent and persistent. Ecological practices and knowledge in allotment gardens are retained and transmitted by imitation of practices, oral communication and collective rituals and habits, as well as by the physical gardens, artifacts, metaphors and rules-in-use (institutions). Finally, a wider social context provides external support through various forms of media, markets, social networks, collaborative organizations, and legal structures. We exemplify the role of urban gardens in generating ecosystem services in times of crisis and change and conclude that stewards of urban green areas and the social memory that they carry may help counteract further decline of critical ecosystem services.  相似文献

High‐resolution multi‐proxy analyses of a sediment core section from Lake Jeserzersee (Saissersee) in the piedmont lobe of the Würmian Drau glacier (Carinthia, Austria) reveal pronounced climatic oscillations during the early late glacial (ca. 18.5–16.0k cal a BP). Diatom‐inferred epilimnetic summer water temperatures show a close correspondence with temperature reconstructions from the adjacent Lake Längsee record and, on a hemispheric scale, with fluctuations of ice‐rafted debris in the North Atlantic. This suggests that North Atlantic climate triggered summer climate variability in the Alps during the early late glacial. The expansion of pine (mainly dwarf pine) between ca. 18.5 and 18.1k cal a BP indicates warming during the so‐called ‘Längsee oscillation’. The subsequent stepwise climate deterioration between ca. 18.1 and 17.6k cal a BP culminated in a tripartite cold period between ca. 17.6 and 16.9k cal a BP with diatom‐inferred summer water temperatures 8.5–10 °C below modern values and a shift from wet to dry conditions. This period probably coincides with a major Alpine glacier advance termed the Gschnitz stadial. A warmer interval between ca. 16.9 and 16.4k cal a BP separates this cold phase from a second, shorter and less pronounced cold phase between ca. 16.4 and 16.0k cal a BP, which is thought to correlate with the Clavadel/Senders glacier advance in the Alps. The following temperature increase, coupled with wet (probably snow‐rich) conditions, caused the expansion of birch during the transition period to the late glacial interstadial. Total carbon and inorganic carbon were determined by coulometric titration for 18 National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Standard Reference Material (SRM) and 4 Canadian Certified Reference Project Standards (CCRMP). A wide range of carbon contents was represented in the samples, which included biological, geological, and environmental materials. The analytical data produced helps fill gaps in the available literature for total and inorganic carbon values.  相似文献

R/S analysis of the oxygen isotope curve of Pacific core V28-239 yields a fractal dimension of 1.22. This value is considered to characterize global climatic change over the last 2 million years as expressed by changing O18 ratios and confirms that climatic variations are characterized by long-term persistence. The fractal dimension of 1.22 compares favorably with the approximate fractal dimension of 1.26 for annual precipitation records for nine major cities in the United States. Although the precipitation and oxygen isotope data are measured in different physical units and recorded at different time scales, fractal analysis allows for a mathematical comparison of the two phenomena. Additionally, since the fractal dimensions of the oxygen isotope and precipitation records are similar, it is implied that such fractal dimensions are characteristic of climate change over the spectral range of 10 to 106 years. Given this temperature curves based on fractal parameters of long-term O18 data could be constructed which would allow examination of characteristics of temperature variation over tens and hundreds of years. Such studies may allow the establishment of limits on natural temperature variation and document the persistence of temperature trends through time. If these trends and limits can be resolved, long-range climatic prediction is feasible.  相似文献

The initial explosions at Mount St. Helens, Washington, on the moring of 18 May 1980 developed into a huge pyroclastic surge that generated catastrophic floods off the east and west flanks of the volcano. Near-source surge deposits on the east and west were lithic, sorted, lacking in accretionary lapilli and vesiculated ash, not plastered against upright obstacles, and hot enough to char wood — all attributes of dry pyroclastic surge. Material deposited at the surge base on steep slopes near the volcano transformed into high-concentration lithic pyroclastic flows whose deposits contain charred wood and other features indicating that these flows were hot and dry. Stratigraphy shows that even the tail of the surge had passed the east and west volcano flanks before the geomorphically distinct floods (lahars) arrived. This field evidence undermines hypotheses that the turbulent surge was itself wet and that its heavy components segregated out to transform directly into lahars. Nor is there evidence that meters-thick snow-slab avalanches intimately mixed with the surge to form the floods. The floods must have instead originated by swift snowmelt at the base of a hot and relatively dry turbulent surge. Impacting hot pyroclasts probably transferred downslope momentum to the snow surface and churned snow grains into the surge base. Melting snow and accumulating hot surge debris may have moved initially as thousands of small thin slushflows. As these flows removed the surface snow and pyroclasts, newly uncovered snow was partly melted by the turbulent surge base; this and accumulating hot surge debris in turn began flowing, a self-sustaining process feeding the initial flows. The flows thus grew swiftly over tens of seconds and united downslope into great slushy ejecta-laden sheetfloods. Gravity accelerated the floods to more than 100 km/h as they swept down and off the volcano flanks while the snow component melted to form great debris-rich floods (lahars) channeled into valleys.  相似文献

Transposed-temperature-drop calorimetry, using a Setaram HT 1500 calorimeter, was used to study directly the melting at 1773 K of mixtures of crystalline albite, anorthite, and diopside and of anorthite and forsterite. The enthalpy of albite at 1000–1773 K, starting with both crystalline and glassy samples, was also measured. The results confirm previously measured enthalpies of fusion of albite, diopside and anorthite (Stebbins et al. 1982, 1983; Richet and Bottinga 1984,1986). The new results use thermochemical cycles which completely avoid the glassy state by transforming crystals directly to melts. The enthalpy of fusion of forsterite is estimated to be 89±12 kJ/mol at 1773 K and 114±20 kJ/mol at its melting point of 2163 K. The data allow semiquantitative evaluation of heats of mixing in the molten silicates. Along the Ab-An join, enthalpies of mixing in the liquid at 773 K are the same or somewhat more negative than those in the glass at 986 K, whereas along Ab-Di and An-Di, enthalpies of mixing in the liquid are distinctly more positive than in the glass. These differences correlate with excess heat capacities in the liquids suggested by Stebbins et al. (1984).  相似文献

In this paper a methodology has been presented for constructing the most critical accelerogram from among a be class of candidate accelerograms for a given site and structure. This most critical accelerogram could be used to assess seismic resistance of a structure with a high level of confidence. Specifically, the method superimposes accelerograms recorded at similar sites to create the candidate accelerograms, then uses optimization and approximation techniques find the most critical accelerogram. The most critical accelerogram is defined as the one which maximizes damage is structure, as computed by non-linear dynamic structural analysis, as well as satisfies constraints on ground parameters to ensure credibility. The damage has been defined as cumulative inelastic energy dissipation or sure of interstorey drifts. The method is applied to ten examples in the paper.  相似文献

Experiments (P=6.9 kb; T=900–1000°C) on four crustal xenoliths from Kilbourne Hole demonstrate the varying melting behavior of relatively dry crustal lithologies in the region. Granodioritic gneisses (samples KH-8 and KH-11) yield little melt (<5–25%) by 925°C, but undergo extensive (30–50%) melting between 950 and 1000°C. A dioritic charnockite (KH-9) begins to melt, with the consumption of all modal K-feldspar, by 900°C. It is as fertile a melt source as the granodiorites at lower temperatures, but is outstripped in melt production by the granodiorite gneisses at high temperature, yielding only 26% melt by 1000°C. A pelitic granulite (KH-12) proved to be refractory (confirming earlier predictions based on geochemistry) and did not yield significant melt even at 1000°C. All melts have the composition of metaluminous to slightly peraluminous granites and are unlikely to be individually recognizable as magma contaminants on the basis of major element chemistry. However, the relative stability of K-feldspar during partial melting will produce recognizable signatures in Ba, Eu, K/Ba, and Ba/Rb. Melts of KH-11, which retains substantial K-feldspar throughout the melting interval, are generally low in Ba (<500–800 ppm), have high K/Ba and low Ba/Rb (est.) (62–124 and 1–3, respectively). Melts of KH-9, in which all K-feldspar disappears with the onset of melting, are Ba-rich [2000–2600 ppm, K/Ba=16–22; Ba/Rb (est.) =25–47]. Melts of KH-8 have variable Ba contents; <500 ppm Ba at low temperature but >900 ppm Ba in high-temperature melts coexisting with a K-feldspar-free restite. Although REE were not measured in either feldspar or melt, the high Kspar/melt Kds for Eu suggests that the melts coexisting with K-feldspar will have strong negative Eu anomalies. Isotopic and trace element models for magma contamination need to take into account the melting behavior of isotopic reservoirs. For example, the most radiogenic (and incompatible element-rich) sample examined here (the pelitic granulite,87Sr/86Sr=0.757) is refractory, while samples with far less radiogenic Sr (87Sr/86Sr=0.708-0.732) produced substantial melt. This suggests that, in this area, the isotopic signature of contamination may be more subtle than expected. The experimental results can be used to model the petrogenesis of Oligocene volcanic rocks exposed 150 km to the NW of Kilbourne Hole, in the Black Range in the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field. The experimental results suggest that a crustal melting origin for the Kneeling Nun and Caballo Blanco Tuffs is unlikely, even though such an interpretation is permitted by Sr isotopes. Curstal contamination of a mantle-derived magma best explains the chemical and isotopic characteristics of these tuffs. Both experimental and geochemical data suggest that the rhyolites of Moccasin John Canyon and Diamond Creek could represent direct melts of granodiorite basement similar, but not identical, to the Kilbourne Hole granodiorites, perhaps slightly modified by crystal fractionation. The absence of volcanic rocks having87Sr/86Sr>0.74 in the region is consistent with the refractory character of the pelitic granulite.  相似文献
