Mean streamwise and vertical velocities as well as streamwise and vertical turbulence intensities were measured in a combustion wind tunnel used to collect pollutant emission data for agricultural field burning. Objectives were to compare the flow field upstream of a fire to that without a fire present and to compare the wind tunnel flow upstream of a fire to field conditions. Vertical centerline traverses with an anemometer were conducted for 32 separate wind tunnel operating configurations (wind speed, position in the tunnel, with or without fire, ceiling position, and floor condition) with one replication for each configuration (total of 64 traverses). We have determined the concentrations and isotopic composition of helium in oceanic basaltic glass both by melting and by crushing in vacuo. A significant fraction of the helium is released by crushing, confirming that it resides within the vesicles. Comparison of volume percent vesicles to the fraction of helium contained in the vesicles gives qualitative agreement with experimental gas-melt partitioning studies. Measured concentrations are therefore, a function of original helium content, magmatic history, vesicle size and quantity, and grain size analyzed. Helium released by crushing is isotopically indistinguishable from that contained in the glass. Diffusion rates for helium in basaltic glass (in the temperature range 125–400°C) determined using the method of stepwise heating, yielded an activation energy of 19.9 ± 1 kcal/mole andlnD0 = ?2.7 ± 0.6 (cgs units). Extrapolation of these results to ocean floor temperatures (0°C) gives a diffusivity of 1.0 ± 0.6 × 10?17 cm2/s, indicating that diffusion is an insignificant mechanism for helium loss from fresh basaltic glasses. The3He/4He ratios are remarkably constant (at 1.10 ± 0.03 × 10?5) for samples from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (FAMOUS area and 23°N), the Juan de Fuca Ridge, the Galapagos spreading center, the Mid-Cayman Rise, and the Central Indian Ocean Ridge. Soil water, stream water, groundwater and rain water were sampled through a storm event in a moorland catchment. Samples were analysed for major ions and deuterium. Chloride and deuterium are used as tracers to enable separation of the stream runoff hydrograph into three components: rain, soil and groundwater. The results indicate that rain water arrives in the stream quickly during the event and contributes a significant volume to the runoff peak. The chemical signal in the rain water is, however, significantly damped, apparently due to mixing with soil water held in the catchment before the event. This is further modified before reaching the stream, apparently through mixing with a deeper groundwater component. Interpretation of tracer, chemistry and hydrological data to present an integrated picture of catchment hydrochemical response is difficult due to problems in the chemical and conceptual definition of the flow components. 相似文献

A model of the ionosphere and plasmasphere is used to study some of the signatures of an idealized SAID (subauroral ion drift) event in the nightside ionosphere. A closed subauroral tube of plasma is considered under solar maximum atmospheric conditions and the westward velocity of 3 km s−1 persists for 30 min. By pursuing, in turn, calculations in which plasma diffusion is suppressed and in which chemical loss of O+ is suppressed, the signatures of O+ chemistry alone and of field-aligned diffusion alone during the SAID event can be elucidated. Both chemical loss and transport contribute to the decay of the F-layer. We investigate planetary fly-bys of asteroids using an approximate volume-averaged method that offers a relatively simple, but very flexible, approach to study the rotational dynamics of ellipsoids. The asteroid is considered to be a deformable, prolate ellipsoid, with its interior being modeled as a rigid-granular material. Effects due to the asteroid's rotation, its self-gravity and gravitational interaction with the planet are included. Using a simplified approach allows us to explore in detail the mechanics of asteroid's deformations and disruptions during planetary encounters. We also compare our results with those obtained by Richardson et al. [Richardson, D.C., Bottke Jr., W.F., Love, S.G., 1998. Icarus 134, 47-76] who used a large numerical code. We find that many of the features reported by them can indeed be captured by our rather simple methodology, and we discuss the reasons why some of our results differ from theirs. 相似文献

Unexplained periodic fluctuations in the decay rates of 32Si and 226Ra have been reported by groups at Brookhaven National Laboratory (32Si), and at the Physikalisch–Technische–Bundesanstalt in Germany (226Ra). We show from an analysis of the raw data in these experiments that the observed fluctuations are strongly correlated in time, not only with each other, but also with the time of year. We discuss both the possibility that these correlations arise from seasonal influences on the detection system, as well as the suggestion of an annual modulation of the decay rates themselves which vary with Earth–Sun distance. 相似文献

We present the Millennium-II Simulation (MS-II), a very large N -body simulation of dark matter evolution in the concordance Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology. The MS-II assumes the same cosmological parameters and uses the same particle number and output data structure as the original Millennium Simulation (MS), but was carried out in a periodic cube one-fifth the size (100 h −1 Mpc) with five times better spatial resolution (a Plummer equivalent softening of 1.0 h −1 kpc ) and with 125 times better mass resolution (a particle mass of 6.9 × 106 h −1 M⊙ ). By comparing results at MS and MS-II resolution, we demonstrate excellent convergence in dark matter statistics such as the halo mass function, the subhalo abundance distribution, the mass dependence of halo formation times, the linear and non-linear autocorrelations and power spectra, and halo assembly bias. Together, the two simulations provide precise results for such statistics over an unprecedented range of scales, from haloes similar to those hosting Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies to haloes corresponding to the richest galaxy clusters. The 'Milky Way' haloes of the Aquarius Project were selected from a lower resolution version of the MS-II and were then resimulated at much higher resolution. As a result, they are present in the MS-II along with thousands of other similar mass haloes. A comparison of their assembly histories in the MS-II and in resimulations of 1000 times better resolution shows detailed agreement over a factor of 100 in mass growth. We publicly release halo catalogues and assembly trees for the MS-II in the same format within the same archive as those already released for the MS. 相似文献

We present a search for the near-infrared spectroscopic signature of the close orbiting extrasolar giant planet HD 75289b. We obtained ∼230 spectra in the wavelength range 2.18–2.19 μm using the Phoenix spectrograph at Gemini South. By considering the direct spectrum, derived from irradiated model atmospheres, we search for the absorption profile signature present in the combined star and planet light. Since the planetary spectrum is separated from the stellar spectrum at most phases, we apply a phase-dependent orbital model and tomographic techniques to search for absorption signatures.
Because the absorption signature lies buried in the noise of a single exposure we apply a multiline deconvolution to the spectral lines available in order to boost the effective signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the data. The wavelength coverage of 80 Å is expected to contain ∼100 planetary lines, enabling a mean line with S/N of 800 to be achieved after deconvolution. We are nevertheless unable to detect the presence of the planet in the data and carry out further simulations to show that broader wavelength coverage should enable a planet like HD 75289b to be detected with 99.9 per cent confidence. We investigate the sensitivity of our method and estimate detection tolerances for mismatches between observed and model planetary atmospheres. 相似文献
