The estimation of erosion and sediment delivery rates in tropical mountain watersheds is difficult and most of the methods widely used for estimating soil erosion over large areas have serious limitations. The 137Cs approach has potential for quantifying soil erosion because it can provide retrospective estimates of long‐term (since 1963) net sediment redistribution relatively quickly. Despite its great potential, 137Cs has not yet been used in an extensive, reconnaissance level survey of erosion in complex tropical mountain environments. The objective of this study was to examine the applicability of the 137Cs method to estimate erosion on steep tropical agricultural lands (23 to 80% slopes) in the Nizao watershed, a humid, tropical mountain area of the Dominican Republic. In this study we (i) examine the variation of 137Cs in ten reference sites—eight coffee groves and two forested sites—and (ii) estimate erosion from 14 cultivated fields. The soil pool of 137Cs ranged from to 150 to 192 mBq cm−2 on reference sites with minimal erosion. Variability among reference sites was less than expected for such complex mountain terrain. The variability within coffee and forested reference (average CV=28%) sites was similar to the variability found on grassland and forested reference sites in the temperate zone. The estimated annual soil loss from 14 sampled fields ranged from 6 to 61 t ha−1 year−1 with an overall mean of 26 t ha−1 year−1. Overall, the soil erosion estimates found using the 137Cs method were much lower than those often assumed for such steep tropical hillsides. These erosion estimates account for soil loss since 1963 only and it seems likely that soil losses may have been much higher in earlier decades immediately after initial forest clearing earlier in the 20th century. Two long-term studies were conducted to determine toxicity, uptake and depuration of Kepone in blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus). In the first, Kepone was administered to crabs in seawater (0.03 or 0.3 μg Kepone/I) or food (eastern oyster,Crassostrea virginica, containing 0.25 μg/g Kepone). Uptake of Kepone in 28 days was primarily through the contaminated oysters. When these crabs were held in Kepone-free seawater and fed Kepone-free oysters for 28 days, no loss of the insecticide was evident. There were adverse effects on molting and survival in crabs fed oysters that contained 0.25 μg/g Kepone. A second study was conducted to determine: (1) the depuration of Kepone over a 90-day period in blue crabs fed oysters from the James River, Virginia (containing 0.15 μg/g Kepone); and (2) the effects of Kepone on molting and survival of blue crabs fed James River oysters or laboratory-contaminated oysters that contained 0.15 or 1.9 μg/g Kepone. Crabs fed Kepone-contaminated oysters followed by a diet of Kepone-free oysters for 90 days had detectable concentrations of the insecticide in tissues. Also, blue crabs that ate oysters containing Kepone in concentrations similar to those found in oysters from the James River, died or molted less frequently than crabs fed Kepone-free oysters meats. 相似文献

The kinetics of the reactions of C2H radical with ethane (k1), propane (k2), and n-butane (k3) are studied over the temperature range of T = 96-296 K with a pulsed Laval nozzle apparatus that utilizes a pulsed laser photolysis-chemiluminescence technique. The C2H decay profiles in the presence of both the alkane reactant and O2 are monitored by the CH(A2Δ) chemiluminescence tracer method. The results, together with available literature data, yield the following Arrhenius expressions: k1(T) = (0.51 ± 0.06) × 10−10 exp[(−76 ± 30)K/T] cm3 molecule−1 s−1 (T = 96-800 K), k2(T) = (0.98 ± 0.32) × 10−10exp[(−71 ± 60)K/T] cm3 molecule−1 s−1 (T = 96-361 K), and k3(T) = (1.23 ± 0.26) × 10−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 (T = 96-297 K). At T = 296 K, k1 is measured as a function of total pressure and has little or no pressure dependence. The results from this work support a direct hydrogen abstraction mechanism for the title reactions. Implications to the atmospheric chemistry of Titan are discussed. 相似文献

The Acquadolce Subunit on the Island of Elba, Italy, records blueschist facies metamorphism related to the Oligocene–early Miocene stages of continental collision in the Northern Apennines. The blueschist facies metamorphism is represented by glaucophane- and lawsonite-bearing metabasite associated with marble and calcschist. These rock types occur as lenses in a schistose complex representing foredeep deposits of early Oligocene age. Detailed petrological analyses on metabasic and metapelitic protoliths, involving mineral and bulk-rock chemistry coupled with P–T and P–T–X(Fe2O3) pseudosection modelling using PERPLE_X, show that the Acquadolce Subunit recorded nearly isothermal exhumation from peak pressure–temperature conditions of 1.5–1.8 GPa and 320–370°C. During exhumation, peak lawsonite- and possibly carpholite- or stilpnomelane-bearing assemblages were overprinted and partially obliterated by epidote-blueschist and, subsequently, albite-greenschist facies metamorphic assemblages. This study sheds new light on the tectonic evolution of Adria-derived metamorphic units in the Northern Apennines, by showing (a) the deep underthrusting of continental crust during continental collision and (b) rapid exhumation along ‘cold’ and nearly isothermal paths, compatible with syn-orogenic extrusion. 相似文献

We present a new approach that incorporates two models to estimate the underwater light field from remote sensing of ocean
color. The first employs a series of analytical, semi-analytical, and empirical algorithms to retrieve the spectrum of inherent
optical properties (IOPs), including the absorption and the backscatter coefficients, from the spectrum of remote sensing
reflectance. The second model computes the profile of photosynthetically available radiation E
0,PAR
(z) for a vertically homogeneous water column using the information of the retrieved IOPs and the ambient optical environment.
This computation is based on an improved look-up table technology that possesses high accuracy, comparable with the full solution
of the radiative transfer equation, and meets the computational requirement of remote sensing application. This new approach
was validated by in situ measurements and an extensive model-to-model comparison with a wide range of IOPs. We successfully mapped the compensation
depth by applying this new approach to process the SeaWiFS imagery. This research suggests that E
0,PAR
(z) can be obtained routinely from ocean-color data and may have significant implications for the estimation of global heat

The effect of ambient currents on nearshore nonlinear wave–wave energy transfer in random waves is studied with the use of a nonlinear frequency domain wave–current interaction model. We focus on the phenomenon of wave recurrence as a classical nonlinear phenomenon whose characteristics are well established for systems truncated to small numbers of frequency modes. The model used for this study is first extended to enhance accuracy; comparisons of permanent form solutions to analytical forms confirm the model accuracy. Application of the model to a highly truncated system confirmed the model’s consistency with published results for both positive (following) and negative (adverse) currents. Propagation of random wave spectra over a flat bottom was performed with the model, with the intent of determining the prevalence of recurrence between the spectral peak and its harmonics. For spectra of moderate Ursell number, it was found that positive currents extended the length scale of recurrence relative to the case with no currents; conversely, negative currents reduced the recurrence lengths. However, beyond a propagation distance of ≈40 wavelengths of the spectral peak, recurrence becomes almost completely damped as the spectra becomes broad and the spectral energies equilibrate. For spectra of high Ursell number, in contrast, recurrence is almost immediately damped, suggesting that the nonlinearity is sufficient to allow immediate spectral broadening and equilibration and overwhelming any preferential interactions among the spectral peak and its harmonics, regardless of current magnitude or direction. 相似文献

The barrier-island systems of the Mississippi River Delta plain are currently undergoing some of the highest rates of shoreline
retreat in North America (~20 m/year). Effective management of this coastal area requires an understanding of the processes
involved in shoreline erosion and measures that can be enacted to reduce loss. The dominant stratigraphy of the delta plain
is fluvial mud (silts and clays), delivered in suspension via a series of shallow-water delta lobes that prograded across
the shelf throughout the Holocene. Abandonment of a delta lobe through avulsion leads to rapid land subsidence through compaction
within the muddy framework. As the deltaic headland subsides below sea level, the marine environment transgresses the bays
and wetlands, reworking the available sands into transgressive barrier shorelines. This natural process is further complicated
by numerous factors: (1) global sea-level rise; (2) reduced sediment load within the Mississippi River; (3) diversion of the
sediment load away from the barrier shorelines to the deep shelf; (4) storm-induced erosion; and (5) human alteration of the
littoral process through the construction of hardened shorelines, canals, and other activities. This suite of factors has
led to the deterioration of the barrier-island systems that protect interior wetlands and human infrastructure from normal
wave activity and periodic storm impact. Interior wetland loss results in an increased tidal prism and inlet cross-sectional
areas, and expanding ebb-tidal deltas, which removes sand from the littoral processes through diversion and sequestration.
Shoreface erosion of the deltaic headlands does not provide sufficient sand to balance the loss, resulting in thinning and
dislocation of the islands. Abatement measures include replenishing lost sediment with similar material, excavated from discrete
sandy deposits within the muddy delta plain. These sand bodies were deposited by the same cyclical processes that formed the
barrier islands, and understanding these processes is necessary to characterize their location, extent, and resource potential.
In this paper we demonstrate the dominant fluvial and marine-transgressive depositional processes that occur on the inner
shelf, and identify the preservation and resource potential of fluvio-deltaic deposits for coastal management in Louisiana. 相似文献

The development of an efficient energy-dissipating mechanism that works in conjunction with laminated elastomeric bearings in order to reduce the lateral deformation of the isolation system has always been a goal of base isolation research. Theoretically, this deformation will be reduced to the minimum if damping augmentation of the isolation system can reach a critical value. However, augmenting the isolation damping may cause some unwanted side effects. The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of isolation damping on the seismic response of heavily damped base-isolated buildings. The base isolation system is assumed to be linearly viscoelastic and is analysed using the complex mode method. Solutions derived by using perturbation techniques for a two-degree-of-freedom system and the computer simulation for a multiple-degree-of-freedom system reveal that augmenting the isolation damping can reduce efficiently the deformation of the isolation system, but at the price of increasing the high-frequency vibration in the superstructure. When the damping ratio of the isolation system is beyond some level, increasing the isolation damping will enlarge the extreme values of the base and superstructural accelerations. It is also found that approximate solutions derived from the use of classical damping and classical modes of vibration in the seismic analysis of heavily damped base isolation systems can be substantially in error. 相似文献

Measurements of stable isotope compositions and water contents of boninite series volcanic rocks from the island of Chichi-jima, Bonin Islands, Japan, confirm that a large amount (1.6–2.4 wt.%) of primary water was present in these unusual magmas. An enrichment of 0.6‰ in18O during differentiation is explained by crystallization of18O-depleted mafic phases. Silicic glasses have elevated δ18O values and relatively low δD values indicating that they were modified by low-temperature alteration and hydration processes. Mafic glasses, on the other hand, have for the most part retained their primary isotopic signatures since Eocene time. Primary δD values of −53 for boninite glasses are higher than those of MORB and suggest that the water was derived from subducted oceanic lithosphere. 相似文献

Results from a study of stick-slip particle motion at the interface between two stressed foam rubber blocks indicate that normal vibrations and interface separation are an important part of the stick-slip process in foam rubber. The dimension of the dynamic slip pulse is small compared to the dimension of the model (approximately 10 cm vs. 200 cm) consistent with the abrupt-locking slip pulse model ofBrune (1970, 1976), andHeaton (1990). A comparison of frictional heat generation between stable-sliding and stick-slip foam rubber models indicates a linear relation between the temperature increase on the fault surface (for a given distance of slip) and the driving shear force for the stable-sliding model, while for the stick-slip model there is essentially no variation in frictional heat generation with an increase in shear stress. We performed experiments to investigate the ratio of normal motion to shear motion at different levels of normal stress in the stick-slip foam rubber model. Preliminary result indicate that the normal component of the particle motion increases more rapidly with increasing normal stress than the shear component. The phenomenon of interface separation and normal vibrations may thus explain some of the most frustrating problems in earthquake mechanics, e.g., the heat flow paradox, the long-term weakness of major active faults, and anomalousP-wave radiation. 相似文献
