The ability of four regional climate models to reproduce the present-day South American climate is examined with emphasis on La Plata Basin. Models were integrated for the period 1991–2000 with initial and lateral boundary conditions from ERA-40 Reanalysis. The ensemble sea level pressure, maximum and minimum temperatures and precipitation are evaluated in terms of seasonal means and extreme indices based on a percentile approach. Dispersion among the individual models and uncertainties when comparing the ensemble mean with different climatologies are also discussed. The ensemble mean is warmer than the observations in South Eastern South America (SESA), especially for minimum winter temperatures with errors increasing in magnitude towards the tails of the distributions. The ensemble mean reproduces the broad spatial pattern of precipitation, but overestimates the convective precipitation in the tropics and the orographic precipitation along the Andes and over the Brazilian Highlands, and underestimates the precipitation near the monsoon core region. The models overestimate the number of wet days and underestimate the daily intensity of rainfall for both seasons suggesting a premature triggering of convection. The skill of models to simulate the intensity of convective precipitation in summer in SESA and the variability associated with heavy precipitation events (the upper quartile daily precipitation) is far from satisfactory. This work examines the relevance of the inclusion of ground-based gravity data in the calibration process of a global rainfall-discharge reservoir model. The analysis is performed for the Durzon karst system (Larzac, France). The first part of the study focuses on the hydrological interpretation of the ground-based gravity measurements. The second part of the study investigates further the information content of the gravity data with respect to water storage dynamics modelling. The gravity-derived information is found unable to either reduce equifinality of the single-objective, discharge-based model calibration process or enhance model performance through assimilation. 相似文献

Hysteresis in the relationship between suspended sediment concentration and flow during run-off events is commonly used to inform on sediment sources and hydrological pathways. Less attention, however, has been paid to comparing the water and sediment hydrographs, which provide a more direct appreciation of in-event sediment dynamics and their relationship with the upstream catchment characteristics. The aim of this study is to better understand the catchment and hydrological controls on the phasing of water and sediment discharges during events and, in particular, to explore what controls sediment concentrations late on event recessions. Continuous records of flow and turbidity data (calibrated to suspended sediment concentration) were collected from 17 catchments across New Zealand for this purpose. Relationships between event sediment yield and peak flow showed, as anticipated, higher event sediment loads were generated in pasture compared with forested catchments and were also higher from catchments in more erodible terrain. One novel result was that these differences were greater during smaller, more frequent events, whereas the loads from larger flood events tended to converge between pasture and forest catchments. Another novel result was that event sediment load tends to be evenly split between rising and falling stages of the hydrograph in pasture catchments, but forested catchments yield more of their event loads on flood recessions, probably because of delayed erosion or more sediment sources remote from the channel network. Land cover, distance of the sediment sources from the monitoring site, and size of the catchments control sediment concentrations late on event recession. Pasture-dominated and more erodible catchments show longer sediment recessions and therefore stay dirtier for longer time periods. In addition, the size of previous flood events appeared to control the extent of sediment exhaustion after the flood peaks in some catchments. 相似文献

Summary. The seismic structure has been measured to a depth of about 3 km along a 30 km seismic profile in east central Ireland. This profile is unusual in that it is the S -wave velocity—depth structure that has been measured to a degree of precision more normally associated with P -wave results. One reason for this is that the sources used were quarry blasts which generated strong S -waves and short-period surface waves but rather weak P -waves.
The results show a layer of Carboniferous limestone with shear velocity 2.65 km−1 s overlying a layer with a velocity of 3.06 km s−1 . This second layer was interpreted as Lower Palaeozoic strata (Silurian/Ordovician) since this velocity was evident in an inlier seen at the surface at the northern end of the line. A third refraction horizon, shear velocity 3.45 km s−1 and displaying a basinal structure, was also recognized. This may be Cambrian or Precambrian basement. 相似文献

We have obtained broadband spectrophotometric observations of four of the recently discovered small satellites of Saturn (Gladman et al., 2001, Nature 412, 163-166). The new data enable an understanding of the provenance, composition, and interrelationships among these satellites and the other satellites of Saturn, particularly Iapetus, Phoebe, and Hyperion. Temporal coverage of one satellite (S21 Tarvos) was sufficient to determine a partial rotational lightcurve. Our major findings include: (1) the satellites are red and similar in color, comparable to D-type asteroids, some KBOs, Iapetus, and Hyperion; (2) none of the satellites, including those from the “Phoebe Group” has any spectrophotometric relationship to Phoebe; and (3) S21 Tarvos exhibits a rotational lightcurve, although the data are not well-constrained and more observations are required to fit a definitive period. Dust created by meteoritic impacts and ejected from these satellites and additional undiscovered ones may be the source of the exogenous material deposited on the low-albedo side of Iapetus. Recent work which states that the small irregular satellites of Saturn have impacted Phoebe at least 6-7 times in the age of the Solar System (Nesvorny et al., 2003, Astron. J. 126, 398-429), suggests that such collisions may have propelled additional material from both Phoebe and the small irregular satellites toward Iapetus. The accretion of material from outer retrograde satellites may be a process that also occurs on Callisto and the uranian satellites. 相似文献

The paper presents an approach for characterizing pavement materials using the modified linear elastic behaviour. The secant modulus of elasticity is expressed in terms of the stress invariants and an expression for the secant Poisson's ratio is derived using path independence of the total work along a closed loading cycle. Triaxial test results of granular base–subbase materials which exhibit strong non-linear behaviour and dilatancy are analysed and presented. The constitutive law is included in a finite element program and results of pavement analyses are discussed. It is found that the secant Poisson's ratio of granular base materials reaches values between 0·6 and 0·7, indicating a volume increase under high stress ratios. The pavement response predicted using the above material characterization is compatible with non-destructive test results. 相似文献

The assumption that the roughness Reynolds number \(( Re_{*})\) can be used as a basis for quantifying the boundary-layer property \({ kB}^{-1} (= \ln (z_{0}/z_{0T}))\) as in some modern numerical models is questioned. While \({ Re}_{*}\) is a useful property in studies of pipe flow, it appears to have only marginal applicability in the case of treeless terrain, as studied in the two experimental situations presented here. For both the daytime and night-time cases there appears to be little correlation between \({ kB}^{-1}\) and \({ Re}_{*}\). For daytime, the present studies indicate that the assumption \({ kB}^{-1} \approx 2\) is acceptable, while for night-time, the scatter involved in relating \({ kB}^{-1}\) to \({ Re}_{*}\) suggests there is little reason to assume a direct relationship. However, while the scatter affecting all of the night-time results is large, there remains a significant correlation between the heat and momentum fluxes upon which an alternative methodology for describing bulk air–surface exchange at night could be constructed. The friction coefficient (\(C_{f}\)) and the turbulent Stanton number \(({ St}_{*})\) are discussed as possible alternatives for describing bulk properties of the air layer adjacent to the surface. While describing the surface roughness in terms of the friction coefficient provides an attractive simplification relative to the conventional methodologies based on roughness length and stability considerations, use of the Stanton number shares many of uncertainties that affect \({ kB}^{-1}\). Sediment fluxes from high standing oceanic islands (HSIs) such as New Zealand are some of the highest known [Milliman J. D. and Syvitski J. P. M. (1992) Geomorphic/tectonic control of sediment discharge to the ocean: the importance of small mountainous rivers. J. Geol.100, 525-544]. Recent geochemical work has suggested that along with their extremely high physical weathering yields, many New Zealand watersheds also have very high chemical weathering yields. In New Zealand, the magnitude of both the physical and chemical weathering yields is related to the lithology of the watershed. Most of the previous work on this topic has been undertaken in Southern Alps watersheds of schist and greywacke and in East Cape watersheds of semi-consolidated marine sediments and greywacke. We recently sampled North Island watersheds in the Taranaki and Manawatu-Wanganui regions which have been subjected to volcanism since the Miocene. We sampled watersheds that contain both volcanic and sedimentary rocks. A series of water and sediment samples was collected and analyzed for major, minor and trace elements. This was done to quantify the weathering intensities in the watersheds and to establish the relationship between physical and chemical weathering yields in volcanic lithologies. Our results reveal distinct chemical signatures for the different regions. Waters draining the Taranaki region volcanics are significantly enriched in K+, and depleted in Ca2+ and Sr2+ compared to waters draining the Manawatu-Wanganui region volcanics, which also traverse expanses of sedimentary siltstones and mudstones. The Ca2+ and Sr2+ depletions may reflect the relative absence of CaCO3 in the Taranaki region watersheds. In addition, sediment samples from the Taranaki region show significant enrichment in Ti, Al, Ca, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, and P and depletion in Si and Rb compared to those of the Manawatu-Wanganui region. From total dissolved solids concentrations and mean annual water discharge, we calculate chemical weathering yields of 60-240 tons km−2 a−1. These weathering yields fall within the middle to upper range of those previously documented for the Southern Alps (93-480 tons km−2 a−1) and East Cape (62-400 tons km−2 a−1). Calculated silicate weathering yields of 12-33.6 tons km−2 a−1 and CO2 consumption of 852-2390 × 103 mol km−2 a−1 for the rivers draining the Taranaki volcanic region are higher than those previously reported for watersheds hosted in sedimentary and metamorphosed rock terrains on HSIs. CO2 consumption is found to be within the range previously measured for the basaltic terrains of the Deccan Traps (580-2450 × 103 mol km−2 a−1) and Réunion Island(1300-4400 × 103 mol km−2 a−1). Our calculated chemical weathering yields demonstrate the importance of HSIs, particularly those with volcanic terrains, when considering global geochemical fluxes. 相似文献

flow models. Equations for flows between regions, total outflow from and total inflow to a region are linked by balancing
factors. This paper presents a consistent formulation of Spatial Interaction Models in the Wilson tradition and Alonso's Theory
of Movements. The paper is intended as an introduction to the model and a review of␣the state of the art. Besides it is argued
that simultaneous equation techniques are required to estimate the so-called systemic parameters.
