From a scientist’s viewpoint a web site is one tool used to conduct research. From an artist’s viewpoint web sites are a form of visual composition. From a developer’s point of view a web site is a type of application. While web sites are a relatively new medium with a particular set of constraints, they do adhere to the same basic design principles that apply to other art forms. These design principles are the basic assumptions that affect the arrangement of elements within a composition. A successful design uses the principles and elements to achieve a visual goal in the composition. A web site designed for scientists has unique properties which are not shared by many other types of web sites. These properties influence the overall visual design of the web sites. Recently at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at UCLA undertook a re-design of a number of its websites. In the effort, the use of visual design principles combined with the properties of a science web site were put to the test. In all, six different web sites were designed each with a difference science focus. We describe the process used to design the web sites which involve forming teams of designers, scientists and developers. Satellite and ground-based measurements of the hydrogen fluoride (HF) total content (TC) are analyzed and compared. The HF profiles measured with an FTS device on the ACE satellite are used to calculate the TC and compare it with the ground-based measurements near St. Petersburg in 2009–2011. A comparison indicated that the seasonal variations in HF TC based on two independent measurements are in good qualitative agreement. Rare (nine) cases of direct comparison between two measurement types coordinated with respect to time (during the day) and site (no farther than 500 km) gave the following characteristics: the average difference is 8% and satellite data predominate over ground data; the standard deviation of a difference is 7%. In two cases of close measurement pairs (closer than 200 km), a comparison gave differences of 1 and 7%. The statistical characteristics of differences between two measurement types are in good agreement with the independent comparison of the ACE-FTS HF TC measurements with the NDACC network data. 相似文献

The Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) survey is a large area (2?? sr), sensitive (40 mJy), high frequency (20 GHz) survey of the southern sky. The survey was conducted in two parts: an initial fast scanning survey, and a series of more accurate follow-up observations. The follow-up survey catalog has been presented by Murphy et al. The procedure of numerical integration of the elliptic three dimensional restricted threebody problem by the use of recurrence relations to evaluate successively higher derivatives of the relative position and velocity vectors of the bodies and of the variational matrix is investigated. A set of recurrence relations is developed which involves the introduction of fewer auxiliary variables than in previous papers of this series, while the recurrence relations themselves are of a simpler form than those in other treatments involving the same number of such auxiliary variables. A technique for automatic adjustment of the integration step-length at each point in the orbit, such that the local truncation error remains close to, but always less than, some specified amount, is incorporated. This technique involves the comparison of pre-integration values with those obtained after consecutive forward and reverse integration steps, and has decided advantages over step-adjustment methods currently in use.Both these modifications to previous techniques are shown, by presentation of sample computational results, to represent considerable savings in machine time for a given calculation and desired accuracy; these savings are generally around a factor of two and become greater as the desired accuracy in the computations increases. 相似文献

The analysis of variations in satellite orbits when they pass through 15th-order resonance (15 revolutions per day) yields values of lumped geopotential harmonics of order 15, and sometimes of order 30. The 15th-order lumped harmonics obtained from 24 such analyses over a wide range of orbital inclinations are used here to determine individual harmonic coefficients of order 15 and degree 15,16,…35; and the 30th-order lumped harmonics (from eight of the analyses) are used to evaluate individual coefficients of order 30 and degree 30,32,…40. The new values should be more accurate than any previously obtained. The accuracy of the 15th-order coefficients of degree 15, 16,…23 is equivalent to 1 cm in geoid height, while the 30th-order coefficients of degree 30, 32 and 34 are determined with an accuracy which is equivalent to better than 2 cm in geoid height. A high correlation (r 0.80) exists between the intensities of all three X-ray lines and the 2800 MHz solar flux. The ratio of the forbidden to the intercombination line intensities is found to be essentially independent of long term solar activity. Summary. A simple model is developed to relate the maximum down-wind and cross-wind ranges of pyroclasts forming a plinian airfall deposit to the dynamic processes in the eruption cloud from which they fall and the atmospheric wind conditions in the area. The eruption cloud dynamics are in turn related to the eruptive conditions in the vent (vent radius, exsolved magmatic volatile weight fraction, velocity with which material passes through the vent, and mass eruption rate), some or all of which can be deduced if the appropriate field measurements can be made. Some aspects of the stability of convecting volcanic eruption clouds are investigated, and the effects on eruption cloud height of the local atmospheric temperature profile and the value adopted for the entrainment constant (which relates the horizontal flow speed of atmospheric air entering the column to the vertical rise speed of the column material) are explored. It is confirmed that eruption-cloud rise height and pyroclast dispersal are mainly controlled by the mass eruption rate (per unit length of active fissure in the case of linear vents) and, hence, the heat input rate to the cloud; but a significant subsidiary dependence on the amount of exsolved magma volatiles is also found. The eruption cloud model is validated by application to observed historic eruptions, and its use in the analysis of palaeo-eruptions is discussed. 相似文献
