Plasma irregularities present in the solar wind are plasmoids, i.e. plasma-magnetic field entities. These actual plasmoids differ from ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) filaments. Indeed, (1) their “skin” is not infinitely thin but has a physical thickness which is determined by the gyromotion of the thermal ions and electrons, (2) they are of finite extent and their magnetic flux is interconnected with the interplanetary magnetic flux, (3) when they penetrate into the magnetosphere their magnetic field lines become rooted in the ionosphere (i.e. in a medium with finite transverse conductivity), (4) the external Lorentz force acting on their boundary surface depends on the orientation of their magnetic moment with respect to the external magnetic field, (5) when their mechanical equilibrium is disturbed, hydromagnetic oscillations can be generated. It is also suggested that the front side of all solar wind plasmoids which have penetrated into the magnetosphere is the inner edge of the magnetospheric boundary layer while the magnetopause is considered to be the surface where the magnetospheric plasma ceases to have a trapped pitch angle distribution. 相似文献

Martian altitudes were measured by radar during the oppositions of 1971 and 1963 using the 64-m antenna at Goldstone (California). The resultant topographic profiles substantiate a zonal classification of the volcanic flows blanketing the south flanks of Arsia Mons, and they confirm the existence of a secondary, parasitic shield attached from the SSW to the main Arsia shield. The secondary shield is about 400 km in diameter at its base and at least 4 km high at its center. South of Valles Marineris, the Tharsis plateau is bounded by the approximate longitudes of 80° in the east and 140° in the west. In the Sinai Planum, closely adjacent to Coprates Chasma, another rise has been detected, bounded by longitudes of 55° in the east and 80° in the west. A volcanic shield of diameter 80 km, capped with a 22 km caldera has been identified near the crest of the rise. Topographic highs of about 1 km are associated with heavily faulted tracts such as Claritas Fossae. The distribution and orientation of the lunar-mare-like ridges in Sinai Planum appear to be independent of the regional gradients. Segments of the chaotic terrain at the eastern terminus of Valles Marineris are located as much as 6 km below the level of the surrounding plains. 相似文献

The leeway of 20-ft containers in typical distress conditions is established through field experiments in a Norwegian fjord
and in open-ocean conditions off the coast of France with a wind speed ranging from calm to 14 m s−1. The experimental setup is described in detail, and certain recommendations were given for experiments on objects of this
size. The results are compared with the leeway of a scaled-down container before the full set of measured leeway characteristics
are compared with a semianalytical model of immersed containers. Our results are broadly consistent with the semianalytical
model, but the model is found to be sensitive to choice of drag coefficient and makes no estimate of the crosswind leeway
of containers. We extend the results from the semianalytical immersion model by extrapolating the observed leeway divergence
and estimates of the experimental uncertainty to various realistic immersion levels. The sensitivity of these leeway estimates
at different immersion levels are tested using a stochastic trajectory model. Search areas are found to be sensitive to the
exact immersion levels, the choice of drag coefficient, and somewhat less sensitive to the inclusion of leeway divergence.
We further compare the search areas, thus, found with a range of trajectories estimated using the semianalytical model with
only perturbations to the immersion level. We find that the search areas calculated without estimates of crosswind leeway
and its uncertainty will grossly underestimate the rate of expansion of the search areas. We recommend that stochastic trajectory
models of container drift should account for these uncertainties by generating search areas for different immersion levels
and with the uncertainties in crosswind and downwind leeway reported from our field experiments. 相似文献

ABSTRACT We introduce a semantically-enriched method of generating color schemes for various types of digital maps that reduces the energy consumption of the display device while preserving the quality of the original design. Energy-aware design intersects two important trends in cartography. First, as more maps are viewed today on mobile, battery life has become a central constraint influencing design. Second, there is increasing need for green computing, which encourages the efficient use of energy to limit environmental impacts. This paper focuses on one important aspect of energy-aware cartography: color design. Existing research on energy-aware color adjustment methods apply broadly to images or websites. However, the colors used in maps have more structured semantic relationships than most documents viewed on mobile devices, and efforts to account for these relationships while reducing energy consumption are limited. To fill this gap, we mathematically formalize energy-aware map-color adjustment as a constrained optimization problem: we define energy consumption as the objective function and model the preservation of semantic relationships as the search constraints. We evaluate our proposed method against a common color dimming method using four maps with different semantic relationships. Knowledge about the acting stresses is of crucial importance for understanding the tectonics of a region. Data about the stress field in north-eastern Germany used to be very rare. In general, it was assumed that the orientation of the larger horizontal principal stress (SH ) is similar to that found for western Germany and central West-Europe, i.e. NW–SE. To check this, several borehole logs of the late 1980s were analysed for information on the principal horizontal stress orientations: they include Four-Arm-Dipmeter and borehole televiewer data from 15 boreholes. The depth range of our stress results reaches from 1500 to 6700 m. They were compared to a few other data, especially from hydraulic fracturing, and to recent findings on the stresses in the Northwest German basin. In contrast to expectation, SH derived from breakout orientations below the salt layers displayed N to NE orientation. The latter was found at 10 locations spread over the NE-German basin from Berlin to the Baltic sea, from the Polish border to the former border between East and West Germany. Moreover, this stress rotation in the subsaline formations seems to be the continuation of a trend found in the NW German basin. 相似文献

Forests modify snow processes and affect snow water storage as well as snow disappearance timing. However, forest influences on snow accumulation and ablation vary with climate and topography and are therefore subject to temporal and spatial variability. We utilize multiple years of snow observations from across the Pacific Northwest, United States, to assess forest–snow interactions in the relatively warm winter conditions characteristic of maritime and transitional maritime–continental climates. We (a) quantify the difference in snow magnitude and disappearance timing between forests and open areas and (b) assess how forest modifications of snow accumulation and ablation combine to determine whether snow disappears later in the forest or in the open. We find that snow disappearance timing at 12 (out of 14) sites ranges from synchronous in the forest and open to snow persisting up to 13 weeks longer in the open relative to a forested area. By analyzing accumulation and ablation rates up to the day when snow first disappears from the forest, we find that the difference between accumulation rates in the open and forest is larger than the difference between ablation rates. Thus, canopy snow interception and subsequent loss, rather than ablation, set up longer snow duration in the open. However, at two relatively windy sites (hourly average wind speeds up to 8 and 17 m/s), differential snow disappearance timing is reversed: Snow persists 2–5 weeks longer in the forest. At the windiest sites, accumulation rates in the forest and open are similar. Ablation rates are higher in the open, but the difference between ablation rates in the forest and open at these sites is approximately equivalent to the difference at less windy sites. Thus, longer snow retention in the forest at the windiest sites is controlled by depositional differences rather than by reduced ablation rates. These findings suggest that improved quantification of forest effects on snow accumulation processes is needed to accurately predict the effect of forest management or natural disturbance on snow water resources. 相似文献

Some years ago, earth scientists came to realize that knowing more about the geology of an orebody or an oil reservoir makes it easier to make the appropriate decisions concerning mine planning or reservoir exploitation. Geostatistical techniques for simulating lithofacies—that is, the geometry of the geology—were developed as a result of this. These methods should be able to produce geological images that respect not only the anisotropies of the different lithofacies but also their spatial layout relative to one another. While indicator variograms ensure that anisotropies are respected, another tool needs to be incorporated in the simulation technique to reflect the relative spatial layout of the different lithofacies. We propose to use the concept of edge effects that define the position of one lithofacies relative to another. Simple tests using direct and cross indicator variograms confirm the presence or absence of edge effects. We investigate if and how edge effect information can be incorporated in the different indicator simulation techniques—sequential indicator simulations, simulated annealing, the truncated Gaussian method and plurigaussian simulations. Results show that the choice of simulation method must be guided by the edge effect characteristics of the experimental lithologic data. 相似文献
