Karst aquifers are highly susceptible to contamination, with numerous points of entry for contaminants through recharge features
such as sinkholes, swallow holes and solutionally enlarged fractures. These recharge features may be filled or obscured at
the surface, requiring the use of geophysical or remote sensing techniques for their identification. This study uses seismic
refraction data collected at the Ft. Campbell Army Airfield (CAAF), Kentucky, USA, to test the hypothesis that refraction
tomography is a useful tool for imaging bedrock depressions beneath thick overburden (greater than 20 m of unconsolidated
sediment). Southeast of the main taxiway of CAAF seismic velocity tomograms imaged a bedrock low, possibly a closed depression,
at a depth of 25 m that had been earlier identified through delay-time analysis of the same refraction data. Tomography suggests
the bedrock low is about 250-m wide by 10-m deep at its widest point. High rates of contaminant vapor extraction over the
western extension of this feature suggest a high concentration of contaminants above, and within, this filled bedrock low,
the base of which may contain solutionally enlarged fractures (i.e. karst conduits) that could funnel these contaminants to
the upper or lower bedrock aquifers. This study thus demonstrates the viability of seismic refraction tomography as a tool
for identification of filled sinkholes and bedrock depressions in karst areas. 相似文献

Despite extensive geochemical study and their importance to granite studies, the geochronology of Silurian to early-Devonian granitic rocks of southeastern Australia is poorly understood. In order to provide an improved temporal framework, new ion microprobe U–Pb zircon ages are presented from these rocks, and previous work is critically reviewed. Geochronological control is best in the Berridale Batholith, where S- and I-type granites have a close spatial relationship. In this region, there is a small volume of I-type granite that crystallised at 436 Ma, followed closely by a large volume of S-type granite at 432 Ma. I-type granite is abundant in a second peak at ca 417 Ma, although the Jindabyne pluton from the Kosciuszko Batholith is slightly older, at 424 Ma. A broader survey of S-type granite throughout the eastern Lachlan Orogen shows that the 432 Ma event is ubiquitous. There is no temporal overlap between S- and I-type granites in the Kosciuszko and Berridale Batholiths, which suggests that factors other than variations in degree of crustal contamination (which may include variation in tectonic setting, heat-flow, mass transfer across the crust–mantle boundary and/or availability in source materials) contribute to the diversity in granite types. The S-type granitic rocks occupy an aerial extent of greater than 28 000 km2, and geochronological constraints suggest that the crystallisation of these granites took place over a relatively small interval, probably less than 10 m.y. This implies a magmatic flux of over 64 km3/Ma per km strike length, comparable to other high-flux granitic belts. Summary Recent dry years (combined dry winter and summer months) within the UK (2005 and 2006) have enhanced concerns relating to
long term water resources and future water provision in large conurbations. This paper examines the mechanisms responsible
for precipitation variability for five different areas in Edinburgh (precipitation regions) using composite historic precipitation
records for the period 1861–2005. Trend analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were undertaken to examine precipitation
variability over time and space. Annual correlation co-efficients were derived for relationships between precipitation areas,
atmospheric–oceanographic variations and geographic parameters. Stepwise regression models were constructed to specify annual
precipitation, through atmospheric variations, for each of the precipitation areas. Significant downward trends in precipitation
(p < 0.05) were noted in two out of the five precipitation areas, with one principal component representing precipitation variability
over Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills. Precipitation variability is best explained by fluctuations in pressure, altitude and
proximity to coast. Precipitation trends cannot be explained by changes in atmospheric circulation patterns.

Data from four A3 radio wave circuits in central Europe are used to analyse the representativeness of the ionization and gravity wave activity pattern in the lower ionosphere (85 – 100 km) in the CRISTA experiment interval (3 – 12 November 1994) for the given conditions. It has been found that the CRISTA experiment interval was run under conditions, which are highly representative both of October – November 1994 and autumn, low-moderate solar activity, the descending phase of solar cycle conditions, i.e. CRISTA measurements may be considered to provide values identical with, or close to climatological values (at least for central Europe, h = 85 – 100 km). 相似文献

The authors describe a procedure for the compilation of maps of the avalanche hazard in high-mountain regions of Afghanistan. U-Pb systems were examined in samples (ranging from 4 to 10 cm3 in volume) of ore material taken from along a 3.5-m profile across a zone of U mineralization exposed in an underground mine at the Strel’tsovskoe U deposit in eastern Transbaikalia. The behaviors of two isotopic U-Pb systems (238U-206Pb and 235U-207Pb) are principally different in all samples from our profile. While the individual samples are characterized by a vast scatter of their T(206Pb/238U) age values (from 112 to 717 Ma), the corresponding T(207Pb/235U) values vary much less significantly (from 127 to 142 Ma) and are generally close to the true age of the U mineralization. The main reason for the distortion of the U-Pb system is the long-lasting (for tens of million years) migration of intermediate decay products in the 238U-206Pb(RD238U) in the samples. This process resulted in the loss of RD238U from domains with high U concentrations and the subsequent accommodation of RD238U at sites with low U concentrations. The long-term effect of these opposite processes resulted in a deficit or excess of 206Pb as the final product of 238U decay. The loss or migration of RD238U are explained by the occurrence of pitchblende in association with U oxides that have higher Si and OH concentrations than those in the pitchblende and a higher +6U/+4U ratio. The finely dispersed character of the mineralization and the loose or metamict texture of the material are the principal prerequisites for RD238U loss and an excess of 206Pb in adjacent domains with low U concentrations. Domains with low U contents in the zone with U mineralization serve as geochemical barriers (because of sulfides contained in them) at which long-lived RD238U(226Ra, 210Po, 210Bi, and 210Pb) were accommodated and subsequently caused an excess of 206Pb. The 235U-207Pb system remained closed because of the much briefer lifetime of the 235U decay products. This may account for the significant discrepancies between the T(206Pb/238U) and T(207Pb/235U) age values. RD238U was most probably lost via the migration of radioisotopes at the middle part and end of the 238U family (starting with 226Ra). The heavy Th, Pa, and U radioisotopes (234Th, 234Pa, 234U, and 230Th) that occur closer to the beginning of 238U decay, before 226Ra, only relatively insignificantly participated in the process. Our results show that the loss and migration of RD238U are, under certain conditions, the main (or even the only) process responsible for the distortion of the U-Pb system. 相似文献

Summary Atmospheric variability in outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR) and tropospheric relative vorticity (VOR) over the South American
region was studied from 1979 to 1996 using the complex Morlet wavelet function. The analyses focus on spatial variation in
intraseasonal and submonthly scales. Scalograms were used to measure submonthly intraseasonal oscillations in convection,
which were found to be predominant in the tropical regions. However, 7-day and 15-day oscillations were observed at tropical
and extratropical latitudes in spring and winter, indicating that transient disturbances play a more prominent role. Regarding
VOR, tropical energy intensities were highest in the spring and summer, whereas subtropical and extratropical energy intensities
were highest in the autumn and winter. The dynamics of the 25-day and 45-day VOR oscillations indicates a possible correlation
with Rossby waves over the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, mainly during the summer. During winter, the 7-day and 15-day VOR
oscillations are more frequent at higher latitudes and are enhanced along storm tracks. It was also observed that convection
amplitudes in the regions of maximum intensity change appreciably from year to year and from season to season, showing that
the behavior of the submonthly and intraseasonal oscillations is nonperiodic and correlates strongly with El Ni?o/Southern
Oscillation years. These results confirm the efficiency of wavelet analysis for time-scale studies of atmospheric variability. 相似文献

The composition of phytoplankton assemblages were studied in three sections across the continental shelf between the Río de la Plata and the oceanic waters of the Subtropical Convergence, during late spring. Algal communities were examined using microscopy and HPLC-derived pigment concentrations. The CHEMTAX program was used to estimate the chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass of different algal classes. Trends in pigment ratios due to phytoplankton photo-adaptation and photo-acclimation were also examined. In order to accommodate the natural diversity of phytoplankton assemblages the original data have been split to represent five ecosystems. In addition, the pigment data for the Brazil Current ecosystem has been split by sample depth. 相似文献
