The narrow optical filaments ('strings' or 'spikes') emerging from the Homunculus of η Carinae are modelled as resulting from the passage of ballistic 'bullets' of material through the dense circumstellar environment. In this explanation, the string is the decelerating flow of ablated gas from the bullet. An archive Hubble Space Telescope image and new forbidden-line profiles of the most distinct of the strings are presented and discussed in terms of this simple model.  相似文献

This paper advances a contingent perspective of residential segregation that recognizes it as a universal phenomenon of residential differentiation, yet one that results from different causal processes and which results in different spatial outcomes. The analytical separation of groups, contexts and scale is key to understanding the nature of segregation, i.e., what it signifies to the group and to the host society. We argue that segregation is created and maintained by different choices and constraints occurring across dimensions of production, reproduction and consumption. Spatial outcomes vary considerably, and may be arrayed in regard to the permanence of segregation, whether it facilitates identity maintenance, and whether segregation itself empowers or marginalizes the ethnic population. To demonstrate our approach, we analyze the segregation experiences of Chinese ethnics. Our argument is organized around the global, national and local scales at which causal processes shape the Chinese experience of segregation.  相似文献

The solubility of carbon dioxide in a Ca-rich leucitite has been investigated as a function of pressure (0.1–2.0 GPa), temperature (1200–1600°C), and oxygen fugacity. The experiments were done in a rapid-quench internally-heated pressure vessel (0.1 GPa) and a piston cylinder (0.5–2.0 GPa). The leucitite glass, previously equilibrated at NNO, and silver oxalate were loaded in Fe-doped Pt capsules (oxidized conditions) and graphitelined Pt capsules (reduced conditions). Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and bulk carbon analyses were used to determine the amount of dissolved carbon. Speciation of carbon was characterized by Fourier transform microinfrared spectroscopy. At oxidized conditions, only CO3 2- is observed as a dissolved species. The solubility is high with CO2 contents in the melt attaining 6.2 wt% at 2.0 GPa and 1350°C. The solubility increases with pressure and shows a significant negative temperature dependence. An excellent correlation is obtained when the data are fit to a model, based on the simplified solubility reaction CO2 (vapor)+O2-(melt)CO3 2-(melt), which describes the solubility of CO2 as a function of pressure, temperature and fCO2. At reduced conditions, the amount of carbon dissolved is significantly lower, and CO3 2- is still the only species present in the melt. If the solubility model established at oxidized conditions is applied, the carbon dissolved appears to be essentially a function of fCO2 alone although divergence increases in a consistent manner with pressure and temperature. This could suggest a low but significant solubility of CO with a positive temperature dependence or a departure of the calculated fluid compositions determined by the equation of state from the actual ones. The strong preferential solubility of carbon in its oxidized C4+ form, even at reduced conditions, implies that ascending melts with high CO2 solubility can experience significant oxidation through degassing. This could reconcile the oxidized nature of some Ca-rich alkaline magmas with more reduced mantle source regions.  相似文献

The Holocene Storegga Slide tsunami in the United Kingdom   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
All currently known sites in the United Kingdom with evidence for the Holocene Storegga Slide tsunami are described. Information on the altitude, distribution, stratigraphical context, age, particle size profile and microfossil characteristics of the deposits is presented. The tsunami involved a greater area than previously described, reaching a coastline over 600 km long. The ubiquitous sand layer which forms the main deposit associated with the event is shown to exhibit a consistent morphology and a particle size profile marked by fining-upwards sequences. An analysis of new and previously published radiocarbon dates indicates that from evidence in the United Kingdom, the event took place sometime around 7100 radiocarbon years BP (7900 calibrated years BP). A new isobase model for mainland Scotland and adjacent areas, providing a preliminary estimate of land uplift since the tsunami, is presented. The model estimates contemporary sea surface level offshore at 14 m below the present day mean high water spring tides. Tsunami sediment run-up is greatest in inlets, where it reaches at least 25 m on Shetland and at least 5 m along the mainland coastline to the south, and run-up of the tsunami would have exceeded these values. The tsunami sediments identified here are considered particularly valuable as a synchronous marker horizon.  相似文献

We have measured the water solubility between 1 atmosphere and 5 kilobars for a calcium aluminosilicate melt of molar composition CaO 0.28, Al2O3 0.06, SiO2 0.66 (An9Wo38Qz53). The water contents were measured via thermogravimetric analysis of isobarically quenched glasses, and range from 0.121 wt% H2O near 1 aim to 9.25 wt% H2O at 5 kilobars. The molar water solubility lies between those of SiO2 and albite melts below around three kilobars, and crosses the albite solubility curve above this pressure. The present results are compared with data in the literature on related calcium aluminosilicate melts. There seems to be little variation of water solubility with composition for calcium aluminosilicate melts, unlike analogous alkali aluminosilicate compositions. Examination of the data suggests that there may be a maximum in molar water solubility along the albite-anorthite join.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the effect of fluorine substitution on hornblende stability in basaltic melts, the upper stability of a synthetic pargasite with 43% of its OH sites replaced by fluorine was studied under fluid-absent conditions at pressures up to 35 kbars. The fluorohydroxy pargasite melts incongruently over an interval of 25–55°C depending on pressure. Liquid, amphibole, clinopyroxene, spinel, forsterite and garnet, at higher pressures, appear in the melting interval. Coordinates for the amphibole-out boundary are: 5 kbars, 1060°C; 15 kbars, 1230°C; 25 kbars, 1285°C; 30 kbars, 1290°C and 35 kbars, 1285°C.Substitution of F for OH in the amphibole structure increases both its temperature and pressure stability limits, and results in a substantial melting interval through which hornblende and melt coexist in fluid-absent situations. Partial melting events could produce fluorine-rich hornblende as a refractory, residual phase.  相似文献

Abstract

A model with two active layers, a mixed layer and a pycnocline layer, over a semipassive deep ocean is described. The model is used to simulate a climatological seasonal cycle in the upper North Pacific. The formulation is similar to that in Cherniawsky et al. (1990). The model resolution is 1° latitude by 1.5° longitude, extending from 62°N to the equator. It is driven with monthly wind stress (Hellerman and Rosenstein, 1983) and with Newtonian heat and freshwater fluxes, which were inferred from climatological (Levitus, 1982) sea‐surface monthly temperatures and annual mean salinities. The monthly temperature anomalies (without the annual mean) are multiplied by a prescribed gain factor and advanced in time, compensating for time delay in the response of the mixed layer. No‐slip and no‐flux constraints are applied on north, east, west and land boundaries, while the following open boundary conditions are used at the equator: (a) free‐slip on zonal velocities in the two layers; (b) a prescribed meridional transport, due to local curl of the wind stress, in the mixed layer; (c) an antisymmetric meridional velocity plus a small flux‐balancing term in the second layer; and (d) across‐equator symmetry for layer depths, temperatures and salinities. Sensitivity to two aspects of parametrization is investigated: (1) the change to horizontal diffusion/viscosity coefficients that depend on the velocity deformation field (as in Smagorinsky, 1963), and (2) the use of idealized piecewise‐linear profiles for second‐layer temperatures and salinities for calculating mixed layer entrainment fluxes.  相似文献

A regional soil and sediment geochemical study in northern California   总被引:7,自引:7,他引:0  
Regional-scale variations in soil geochemistry were investigated in a 20,000-km2 study area in northern California that includes the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, the southern Sacramento Valley and the northern Coast Ranges. Over 1300 archival soil samples collected from the late 1970s to 1980 in El Dorado, Placer, Sutter, Sacramento, Yolo and Solano counties were analyzed for 42 elements by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry following a near-total dissolution. These data were supplemented by analysis of more than 500 stream-sediment samples from higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada from the same study site. The relatively high-density data (1 sample per 15 km2 for much of the study area) allows the delineation of regional geochemical patterns and the identification of processes that produced these patterns. The geochemical results segregate broadly into distinct element groupings whose distribution reflects the interplay of geologic, hydrologic, geomorphic and anthropogenic factors. One such group includes elements associated with mafic and ultramafic rocks including Cr, Ni, V, Co, Cu and Mg. Using Cr as an example, elevated concentrations occur in soils overlying ultramafic rocks in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada (median Cr = 160 mg/kg) as well as in the northern Coast Ranges. Low concentrations of these elements occur in soils located further upslope in the Sierra Nevada overlying Tertiary volcanic, metasedimentary and plutonic rocks (granodiorite and diorite). Eastern Sacramento Valley soil samples, defined as those located east of the Sacramento River, are lower in Cr (median Cr = 84 mg/kg), and are systematically lower in this suite compared to soils from the west side of the Sacramento Valley (median Cr = 130 mg/kg). A second group of elements showing a coherent pattern, including Ca, K, Sr and REE, is derived from relatively silicic rocks types. This group occurs at elevated concentrations in soils overlying volcanic and plutonic rocks at higher elevations in the Sierras (e.g. median La = 28 mg/kg) and the east side of the Sacramento Valley (median 20 mg/kg) compared to soils overlying ultramafic rocks in the Sierra Nevada foothills (median 15 mg/kg) and the western Sacramento Valley (median 14 mg/kg). The segregation of soil geochemistry into distinctive groupings across the Sacramento River arises from the former presence of a natural levee (now replaced by an artificial one) along the banks of the river. This levee has been a barrier to sediment transport. Sediment transport to the Valley by glacial outwash from higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada and, more recently, debris from placer Au mining has dominated sediment transport to the eastern Valley. High content of mafic elements (and low content of silicic elements) in surface soil in the west side of the valley is due to a combination of lack of silicic source rocks, transport of ultramafic rock material from the Coast Ranges, and input of sediment from the late Mesozoic Great Valley Group, which is itself enriched in mafic elements. A third group of elements (Zn, Cd, As and Cu) reflect the impact of mining activity. Soil with elevated content of these elements occurs along the Sacramento River in both levee and adjacent flood basin settings. It is interpreted that transport of sediment down the Sacramento River from massive sulfide mines in the Klamath Mountains to the north has caused this pattern. The Pb, and to some extent Zn, distribution patterns are strongly impacted by anthropogenic inputs. Elevated Pb content is localized in major cites and along major highways due to inputs from leaded gasoline. Zinc has a similar distribution pattern but the source is tire wear.  相似文献
