Results from recent fieldwork and the Aguadomar marine survey in the Lesser Antilles clearly indicate that the volcanic field of southern Dominica has experienced three major edifice collapse events. This led to formation of the most voluminous debris avalanches known in the Caribbean Arc. Submarine hummocky morphology with plurikilometric megablocks is characteristic of debris avalanche deposits. We propose that steep slopes on the western Caribbean side of the island and intense hydrothermal alteration lead to recurrent large-scale edifice collapses. Therefore islands in the Lesser Antilles face a non-negligible risk from generation of tsunamis associated with potential future edifice collapse. To cite this article: A. Le Friant et al., C. R. Earthquakes for the period 1964–1973 are relocated by the method of Joint Hypocenter Determination in order better to resolve the configuration and the structure of the New Guinea—New Britain—Solomon Islands region. Focal mechanism solutions are integrated with the seismicity and interpreted closely with it. A zone of subduction exists beneath New Britain and the Solomon Islands, a zone of left-lateral strike-slip movement extends from New Ireland to New Guinea. The zone of seismicity in northern New Guinea has developed as a result of a continent—island-arc collision in late Oligocene—Miocene times and does not exhibit a well-developed inclined seismic zone. It is proposed that plate tectonics theory does not apply rigorously, but slip-line field theory allows the presentation of a new geodynamic model for this region. 相似文献
During the International Sedimentological Congress of Heidelberg (Germany), the author — in collaboration with his college J.Pel of the University of Liege (Belgium) — has emphasized the influence of the sedimentary rhythm about the location of the stratiform ore deposits in some facies of the reef environment and has proposed a first synthesis of the relations between several stratiform deposits of varying mineralogy and different ages also associated with reef complexes. In this paper, the author illustrates the sedimentological method used previously in resting principally on a comparative analysis of the ore conditions which characterize the stratiform lead zinc deposits of Reocin (Spain), Eastern Alps (Bavaria, Austria), Pine Point (Canada) and S. E. Missouri (United States). 相似文献
U-deposit hosted in hydrothermally altered tuffs in Mexico, together with weathering profiles from Cameroon were studied as natural analogues of radionuclide release and migration. Using petrological and spectroscopic methods (infrared and electron paramagnetic resonance), we have distinguished successive secondary mineral parageneses and the behaviour of radionuclides.
In the U-deposit, the mineral parageneses show that uranium migration is mainly controlled by the redox potential and silica activity of the altering solutions. The high silica content of the solutions is caused by the intense alteration of volcanic rocks. Two types of secondary clay mineral parageneses are evidenced: a kaolinization, intense where uranium is accumulated in the welded tuffs, and a smectitization mainly developed in the underlying weakly welded tuffs.
Several types of kaolinite have been defined according to their genesis (fillings in fissures and feldspar pseudomorphs), their location relative to a breccia pipe where uranium has accumulated (core and rim of the pipe; surrounding rhyolitic tuffs), and particle morphology, structural order and substitutional Fecontent. It is shown that the variations of the concentration of paramagnetic defect centres, always more than ten times as important than those measured in weathering kaolinites, are only correlated to the location of the kaolinites. The highest values correspond to the breccia pipe kaolinites, e.g. kaolinites located in the uranium accumulation zones. Moreover, one or two main defects centres are detected depending on the intimate association of kaolinites with uranium-bearing minerals. Besides, in weathering kaolinites from U-depleted laterites, defect centre concentrations are correlated to the total Fe203 content in bulk samples. This means that the defect centre acts as a memory of the travel of uranium when this element was sorbed onto iron gels in the first stage of weathering.
It is concluded that paramagnetic defect centres in kaolinites might allow an efficient fingerprint of successive irradiations in the natural analogues under study and could be an useful tool to control radionuclides migration through kaolinite-containing clayey materials such as those used for waste repository.
A better understanding of radiation efficiency as well as accurate dose-ratekaolinite-containing clayey materials such as those used for waste reposit estimation are needed for a quantitative tracing of the migration ofA better understanding of radiation efficiency as well as accurate dose-ratekaolin radionuclide elements. With this aim, a simulation has been undertaken withestimation are needed for a quantitative tracing of the migration of various radiations sources. We have determined for each irradiation the parameters of the paramagnetic centres created in order to understand the way they are forming. The knowledge of the parameters governing the formation and the stability of the radiation centres in kaolinites allow to use this mineral as a natural dosimeter. 相似文献
This article reports major results from collaborative research between France and Brazil on soil and water systems, carried out in the Upper Amazon Basin. It reveals the weathering processes acting in the partly inundated, low elevation plateaus of the Basin, mostly covered by evergreen forest. Our findings are based on geochemical data and mineral spectroscopy that probe the crystal chemistry of Fe and Al in mineral phases (mainly kaolinite, Al- and Fe-(hydr)oxides) of tropical soils (laterites). These techniques reveal crystal alterations in mineral populations of different ages and changes of metal speciation associated with mineral or organic phases. These results provide an integrated model of soil formation and changes (from laterites to podzols) in distinct hydrological compartments of the Amazon landscapes and under altered water regimes. 相似文献
Understanding the role of geological heterogeneity on the performance of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) in terms of effective groundwater storage is crucial to design MAR systems. Natural aquifers are affected by a variety of geologic strata and structures at different scales, which are responsible for wide ranging hydraulic properties. This study combines physical experiments and numerical modeling to investigate the effect of geologic structures commonly encountered in sedimentary environments, on MAR-induced groundwater flow patterns using injection wells. Models were conceptualized and parametrized based on the hydrogeological conditions of Tailan River basin in arid NW China, which hosts a typical, structurally complex, alluvial-fan aquifer system affected by sediment layering, clay lenses and anticline barriers, and is extensively studied for the strategic potential of MAR in addressing water shortages in the region. Results showed that, compared to a homogeneous scenario, high-permeability aquifer layers shortened groundwater ages, decreased the thickness of the artificially recharged water lenses (ARWLs), and shifted the stagnation points downstream. Clay lenses increased groundwater residence times but had little effect on spatial flow patterns due to their elongation parallel-to-flow direction. Overall groundwater ages, as well as the thickness of ARWLs created through injection on the upstream side of an anticline, increased, and this to a larger extent than through injection on the downstream side, which did not increase significantly compared to the homogeneous scenario. Results provide insights for MAR optimization in naturally heterogeneous aquifer systems, along with a benchmark tool for application to a wide range of typical geological conditions.
The interaction of aqueous As(III) with magnetite during its precipitation from aqueous solution at neutral pH has been studied as a function of initial As/Fe ratio. Arsenite is sequestered via surface adsorption and surface precipitation reactions, which in turn influence the crystal growth of magnetite. Sorption samples were characterized using EXAFS spectroscopy at the As K-edge in combination with HRTEM observations, energy dispersive X-ray analysis at the nanoscale, electron energy loss spectroscopy at the Fe L3-edge, and XRD-Rietveld analyses of reaction products. Our results show that As(III) forms predominantly tridentate hexanuclear As(III)O3 complexes (3C), where the As(III)O3 pyramids occupy vacant tetrahedral sites on {1 1 1} surfaces of magnetite particles. This is the first time such a tridentate surface complex has been observed for arsenic. This complex, with a dominant As-Fe distance of 3.53 ± 0.02 Å, occurs in all samples examined except the one with the highest As/Fe ratio (0.33). In addition, at the two highest As/Fe ratios (0.133 and 0.333) arsenite tends to form mononuclear edge-sharing As(III)O3 species (2E) within a highly soluble amorphous As(III)-Fe(III,II)-containing precipitate. At the two lowest As/Fe ratios (0.007 and 0.033), our results indicate the presence of additional As(III) species with a dominant As-Fe distance of 3.30 ± 0.02 Å, for which a possible structural model is proposed. The tridentate 3C As(III)O3 complexes on the {1 1 1} magnetite surface, together with this additional As(III) species, dramatically lower the solubility of arsenite in the anoxic model systems studied. They may thus play an important role in lowering arsenite solubility in putative magnetite-based water treatment processes, as well as in natural iron-rich anoxic media, especially during the reductive dissolution-precipitation of iron minerals in anoxic environments. 相似文献
Vibrational properties of diaspore, α-AlOOH, have been re-investigated using room-temperature single-crystal Raman spectroscopy
and low-temperature powder infrared (IR) transmission spectroscopy. First-principles harmonic calculations based on density
functional theory provide a convincing assignment of the major Raman peaks and infrared absorption bands. The large width
of the Raman band related to OH stretching modes is ascribed to mode–mode anharmonic coupling due to medium-strength H-bonding.
Additional broadening in the powder IR spectrum arises from depolarization effects in powder particles. The temperature dependence
of the IR spectrum provides a further insight into the anharmonic properties of diaspore. Based on their frequency and temperature
behavior, narrow absorption features at ~2,000 cm−1 and anti-resonance at ~2,966 cm−1 in the IR spectrum are interpreted as overtones of fundamental bending bands. 相似文献
