We present high-time-resolution optical photometry of the eclipsing binary UZ For using a superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) device, a photon-counting array detector with intrinsic energy resolution. Three eclipses of the ∼18-mag 126.5-min orbital binary were observed using a 6×6 array of tantalum STJs at the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma. The detector presently provides individual photon arrival-time accuracy to about 5 μs, and a wavelength resolution of about 60 nm at 500 nm, with each array element capable of counting up to ∼5000 photon s−1 . The data allow us to place accurate constraints on the accretion geometry from our time- and spectrally resolved monitoring, especially of the eclipse ingress and egress. We find that there are two small accretion regions, located close to the poles of the white dwarf. The positions of these are accurately constrained, and show little movement from eclipse to eclipse, even over a number of years. The colour of the emission from the two regions appears similar, although their X-ray properties are known to be significantly different: we argue that the usual accretion shock may be absent at the non-X-ray-emitting region, and instead the flow here interacts directly with the white dwarf surface; alternatively, a special grazing occultation of this region is required. There is no evidence for any quasi-periodic oscillations on time-scales of the order of seconds, consistent with relatively stable cyclotron cooling in each accretion region. 相似文献

Discs in the 6 Myr old cluster η Chamaeleontis were searched for emission from hot H2 . Around the M3 star ECHA J0843.3−7905, we detect circumstellar gas orbiting at ∼2 au. If the gas is ultraviolet excited, the ro-vibrational line traces a hot gas layer supported by a disc of mass ∼0.03 M⊙ , similar to the minimum mass solar nebula. Such a gas reservoir at 6 Myr would promote the formation and the inwards migration of gas giant planets. 相似文献

We have carried out a study of known clusters within the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) observed areas and have identified 431 Abell, 173 APM and 343 EDCC clusters. Precise redshifts, velocity dispersions and new centroids have been measured for the majority of these objects, and this information is used to study the completeness of these catalogues, the level of contamination from foreground and background structures along the cluster's line of sight, the space density of the clusters as a function of redshift, and their velocity dispersion distributions. We find that the Abell and EDCC catalogues are contaminated at the level of about 10 per cent, whereas the APM catalogue suffers only 5 per cent contamination. If we use the original catalogue centroids, the level of contamination rises to approximately 15 per cent for the Abell and EDCC catalogues, showing that the presence of foreground and background groups may alter the richness of clusters in these catalogues. There is a deficiency of clusters at that may correspond to a large underdensity in the Southern hemisphere. From the cumulative distribution of velocity dispersions for these clusters, we derive a space density of clusters of This result is used to constrain models for structure formation; our data favour low-density cosmologies, subject to the usual assumptions concerning the shape and normalization of the power spectrum. 相似文献

XMM-Newton was used to observe two eclipsing, magnetic cataclysmic variables, DP Leo and WW Hor, continuously for three orbital cycles each. Both systems were in an intermediate state of accretion. For WW Hor we also obtained optical light curves with the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor and from ground-based observations. Our analysis of the X-ray and optical light curves allows us to constrain physical and geometrical parameters of the accretion regions and derive orbital parameters and eclipse ephemerides of the systems. For WW Hor we directly measure horizontal and vertical temperature variations in the accretion column. From comparisons with previous observations we find that changes in the accretion spot longitude are correlated with the accretion rate. For DP Leo the shape of the hard X-ray light curve is not as expected for optically thin emission, showing the importance of optical depth effects in the post-shock region. We find that the spin period of the white dwarf is slightly shorter than the orbital period and that the orbital period is decreasing faster than expected for energy loss by gravitational radiation alone. 相似文献

The intermediate polar PQ Geminorum shows a complex pulsation, caused by a spinning white dwarf, which varies markedly with wavelength. We report XMM–Newton observations, including the soft and hard X-ray bands and the first ultraviolet light curves of this star. We update the ephemeris for PQ Gem allowing us to align these data with a compilation of light curves from the optical to the X-ray. Building on work by previous authors, we show how a model in which accretion flows along skewed field lines, viewed at the correct inclination, can explain the major features of the light curves in all bands. We discuss how the skew of the field lines relates to the spinning down of the white dwarf rotation. 相似文献
