General relativistic analysis of structure and stability of charged fluid disks around compact objects

In this paper we give a detailed general relativistic formulation of the study of structure and stability of charged fluid disks around compact objects like black holes neglecting the self-gravitation of the disk itself. Having presented the general equations for equilibrium as well as for perturbations we solve explicitly the cases of rigidly and differentially rotating thin disks, with constant charge density and zero pressure, confined to the equatorial plane of the black hole. By using normal mode analysis we have analysed the stability of such disks under purely radial perturbations and find that the disks are generally stable. Average nocturnal and seasonal variations of sodium nightglow at 23°S, 46°W

The seasonal variation of the nocturnal average intensity, and the typical variation of the sodium airglow intensity during the night have been deduced, using a data set that has been accumulated over a period of 5 years. The maximum intensity, which occurs at the equinoxes, is about 2–3 times as large as the intensity during winter, when the intensity of the D₂ line is about 30 R. The nocturnal variation is symmetrical about midnight, where the intensity is some 30% less than just after (before) dusk (dawn) values.     

Ion-ion mutual neutralization and ion-neutral switching reactions of some stratospheric ions

Following the recent mass spectrometric observations of the ambient stratospheric positive and negative ions we have carried out co-ordinated laboratory experiments using a selected ion flow tube apparatus and a flowing afterglow apparatus for the following purposes: (i) to consider whether CH₃CN is a viable candidate molecule for the species X in the observed stratospheric ion series H⁺ (H₂O_n (X)_m and (ii) to determine the binary mutual neutralization rate coefficients α_i for the reactions ofH⁺ (H₂O₄ and H⁺(H₂O)(CH₃CN)₃ with several of the negative ion species observed in the stratosphere. We conclude from (i) that CH₃CN is indeed a viable candidate for X and from (ii) that the α_i for stratospheric ions are within the limited range (5–6) × 10^?8 cm³ s^?1.     

User's guide to REDUCE subroutines for algebraic computations in general relativity

We describe the use of a package of subroutines for general-relativistic algebraic computations written in the LISP-based algebraic programming system REDUCE developed by Anthony Hearn. The first group of routines calculates concomitants of the metric tensor such as the Riemann tensor, Ricci tensor, Ricci scalar, Einstein tensor and Weyl tensor from given covariant or covariant and contravariant metric tensor components. One of these procedures includes the evaluation of the Maxwell equations and invariants as well as the Maxwell energy momentum tensor. A second group of routines takes the components of a null tetrad as input and evaluates the null frame projections of the Riemann tensor, the Einstein tensor as well as – if required – the 14 local invariants of the Riemann tensor. It also includes a determination of the Petrov type. Perturbation calculations may be performed and run effectively. The output can be presented in a flexible format chosen according to the needs of the user. A number of further special-purpose programs are available on request. The article should enable a reader familar with General Relativity but unfamilar with formula manipulating system, to employ the package.     

THE SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO METEORITE

The San Juan Capistrano chondrite fell on 15 March 1973; the total recovered mass was 56 g. Electron microprobe, chemical and petrographic studies show it to be a member of the H group and of petrologic type 6. Rare gas studies show that only minor radiogenic gas loss has occurred and yield a K-Ar age of 4.6 × 10⁹ years and a Kr-Kr exposure age of 29 × 10⁶ years.     

On making radio contact with extraterrestrial civilizations

The problem of, attempting to make radio contact, with other technological civilizations is examined. It is argued that there are few (perhaps indeed no) omnidirectional radio beacons in the Galaxy primarily because any such beacon, to be effective, would have to be designed for a call-response time of at least some 10⁴ years, which is much too long to be likely to be acceptable to governments.
