Paleoenvironmental records extending well into the last glacial period are scarce in the steppe regions of southern South America. Here, we present a continuous record for the past 55 ka from the maar lake Laguna Potrok Aike (51°58′ S, 70°23′ W, southern Patagonia, Argentina). Previous studies on a sedimentary core from a lake level terrace near the northern margin of the lake covered parts of Oxygen Isotope Stage (OIS) 3 (59–29 ka) whereas a second core from the centre of the basin comprised the last 16 ka. Tephrostratigraphical constraints and OSL ages from a third core located below the lake level terrace provide the crucial piece to close the gap between the previous coring sites. High-resolution XRF and magnetic susceptibility as well as grain size data indicate a positive hydrological balance alongside with relatively high aeolian activity during the glacial which is contemporaneous with increased dust fluxes in Antarctica. This is therefore the first evidence for contemporaneity of aeolian deposition in both the target area (Antarctica) and in the major source area of Patagonia. During the Holocene climatic conditions driving sediment deposition seem to have been more variable and less dominated by wind compared to glacial times. The identification of a minor lake level lowering at approximately 4 cal ka BP allows to refine earlier paleoenvironmental reconstructions for the Holocene. Within error margins the OSL ages are consistent with published radiocarbon-dated records offering hence a valuable tool for further studies of the sediments from Laguna Potrok Aike. The new chronology confirms the age of three tephra layers up to now only found in Laguna Potrok Aike sediments and ascribed to OIS 3.  相似文献

We revisit the equations governing the bending motions in thin rods and analyse the filtration of flexural waves in vertical drill strings pre‐stressed by gravity. The aim is to study transverse drill‐string vibrations at seismic frequencies for acoustic communication purposes and provide an algorithm for processing reflected and transmitted bending motions generated by downhole lateral vibrations. We obtain the dispersion equation, including attenuation due to a gravity pre‐stress gradient and frequency‐dependent reflection and transmission coefficients at the interface between subsequent tube intervals. We then develop a propagation‐matrix algorithm to simulate flexural waves in a drill string consisting in an assembly of multiple tube sections of different dimensions. The deflection vibrations are obtained at any arbitrary recording point in the drill string. The modelling is cross‐checked with a full‐wave grid algorithm. The analysis shows that the waves produced by a concentrated force are partitioned in standing and propagating modes, which are calculated by using the flexural impedance of the drill string. Moreover, the reflection coefficients weakly depend on the pre‐stress conditions and pre‐stress has important effects for far‐field signal transmission with variable weight on bit (WOB). We discuss the approximations and limits of the method with respect to realistic drilling conditions.  相似文献

A quantitative kinetic model for the growth of the different garnet porphyroblast microstructures (type 1 and type 2) of the Western Schneeberg Complex (WSC) is presented. These porphyroblasts formed by a multiple nucleation and coalescence mechanism. Our numerical simulation shows that at constant diffusion rates: (1) low interface reaction rates result in a fully amalgamated porphyroblast (type 2); (2) intermediate reaction rates result in a porphyroblast, where coalescence of grains closer to the margin prevented amalgamation of those in the centre (similar to type 1 porphyroblasts); and (3) high interface reaction rates result in a porphyroblast microstructure with an atoll form. All three microstructures are characterised by distinctive cluster size distributions. A 2-D cluster size distribution analysis of type 1 porphyroblasts of WSC shows that these did not form because of intermediate interface reaction rates, but because the diffusion rate of nutrients was too low to keep pace with the interface reaction rate.Editorial responsibility: T.L. Seismic surveys were conducted and bathymetric data obtained from four alpine lakes in Switzerland. The curvature of the delta slopes was analysed with mathematical equations. Linear or exponential profiles are observed, representing planar or concave morphologies respectively. Planar profiles are interpreted to represent sediment that rests at the angle-of-repose. The slope angle of these profiles shows a correlation with sediment calibre. Exponential profiles do not show a clear correlation between sediment calibre and slope angle; they do not rest at the angle-of-repose, and different kinds of sediment can rest at the same slope angle. At the transition from lower slope to toe- of-slope, the exponential equation fails to predict the present-day morphology. The toe-of-slope lies above the predicted trend. This is attributed to a drastic increase in turbidite deposition that provides additional sediment and raises the basin-floor profile above the predicted trend. The breaks between delta plain and slope are sharp, reflecting an abrupt change from transport by river flow and waves to gravity-driven transport. In these lakes, the base-level fluctuations relative to supply are small and insufficient to alter this sharp topographic break. The absence of sigmoidal profiles on the Swiss deltas is attributed to the high rate of progradation coupled with small fluctuations in base level.  相似文献

A numerical algorithm for simulation of 2-D (axis-symmetric) wave propagation using a multidomain approach is proposed. The method uses a cylindrical coordinate system, Chebyshev and Fourier differential operators to calculate the spatial derivatives along the radial and vertical direction, respectively, and a Runge–Kutta time-integration scheme. The numerical technique is based on the solution of the equations of momentum conservation combined with the stress–strain relations of the fluid (drilling mud) and isotropic elastic media (drill string and formation). Wave modes and radiated waves are simulated in the borehole-formation system. The algorithm satisfies the reciprocity condition and the results agree with an analytical solution and low-frequency simulation of wave-propagation modes reported in the literature. Examples illustrating the propagation of waves are presented for hard and soft formations. Moreover, the presence of casing, cement, and formation heterogeneity have been considered. Since the algorithm is based on a direct (grid) method, the geometry and the properties defining the media at each grid point, can be general, i.e., there are no limitations such as planar interfaces or uniform (homogeneous) properties for each medium.   相似文献

Compressional and shear-wave velocities (V p andV s) of 210 minicores of carbonates from different areas and ages were measured under variable confining and pore-fluid pressures. The lithologies of the samples range from unconsolidated carbonate mud to completely lithified limestones. The velocity measurements enable us to relate velocity variations in carbonates to factors such as mineralogy, porosity, pore types and density and to quantify the velocity effects of compaction and other diagenetic alterations.Pure carbonate rocks show, unlike siliciclastic or shaly sediments, little direct correlation between acoustic properties (V p andV s) with age or burial depth of the sediments so that velocity inversions with increasing depth are common. Rather, sonic velocity in carbonates is controlled by the combined effect of depositional lithology and several post-depositional processes, such as cementation or dissolution, which results in fabrics specific to carbonates. These diagenetic fabrics can be directly correlated to the sonic velocity of the rocks.At 8 MPa effective pressureV p ranges from 1700 to 6500 m/s, andV s ranges from 800 to 3400 m/s. This range is mainly caused by variations in the amount and type of porosity and not by variations in mineralogy. In general, the measured velocities show a positive correlation with density and an inverse correlation with porosity, but departures from the general trends of correlation can be as high as 2500 m/s. These deviations can be explained by the occurrence of different pore types that form during specific diagenetic phases. Our data set further suggests that commonly used correlations like Gardner's Law (V p-density) or the time-average-equation (V p-porosity) should be significantly modified towards higher velocities before being applied to carbonates.The velocity measurements of unconsolidated carbonate mud at different stages of experimental compaction show that the velocity increase due to compaction is lower than the observed velocity increase at decreasing porosities in natural rocks. This discrepancy shows that diagenetic changes that accompany compaction influence velocity more than solely compaction at increasing overburden pressure.The susceptibility of carbonates to diagenetic changes, that occur far more quickly than compaction, causes a special velocity distribution in carbonates and complicates velocity estimations. By assigning characteristic velocity patterns to the observed diagenetic processes, we are able to link sonic velocity to the diagenetic stage of the rock.  相似文献

A model of intergalactic medium heated by QSOs and cooled by the expansion of the universe and Compton cooling is studied in the framework of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. Cosmological evolution functions of the comoving density of QSO's as well as the case of no evolution are considered. The theoretical X-ray background spectrum (through thermal bremsstrahlung) and Comptony parameter are calculated including relativistic corrections in the electron-electron, electron-proton and electron-photon interactions. The observed X-ray background and the upper limit of the Compton parametery cobe given by the COBE satellite are used to adjust, for each value of reheating redshiftsz c ranging from 0.1 to 5.0, the present values of the temperatureT 0 and densityn 0 of the intergalactic gas. Forz c > 0.25, when the theoretical X-ray spectrum fits the observed one, the adjusted values ofT 0 andn 0 imply iny >y cobe. On the other hand, whenT 0 andn 0 are consistent withy cobe, the calculated X-ray spectrum is lower than the observed one. Unless 100% of the observed X-ray background is due to discrete sources and if the intergalactic medium contributes more than 2.5% to such background we come to the interesting result that the medium must have been heated atz c < 1. In this case we shall have to explain the high energy rates necessary to heat the intergalactic medium. Forz c 0.25, it is possible to find values ofT 0 andn 0 such that both the calculated X-ray background and the y parameter simultaneously reproduce the corresponding observed values. However, in this case, unless it could be shown to be otherwise by future observations or theoretical studies, it seems that the model of hot intergalactic medium is not plausible because of the high energies required to heat the intergalactic gas.  相似文献

Lakes can be used as model basins to investigate subaqueous slope stability under static and dynamic loading conditions. This study combines geophysical, sedimentological and in situ geotechnical methods with limit equilibrium calculations in order to discuss (i) the geological and sedimentological processes acting on submerged non-deltaic lateral slopes in perialpine, fjord-type Lake Lucerne (Central Switzerland); (ii) their control on physical and geotechnical properties that eventually affect the subaqueous stability conditions and slope failure initiation, and (iii) the quantitative assessment of subaqueous slope stability. Three detailed case studies are presented to describe and quantitatively reconstruct stability conditions of slopes that failed during a well-documented historic earthquake in 1601 A.D. and during a prehistoric Late Holocene earthquake around 2220 cal yr BP (both Mw > 6).

Glacio-lacustrine sedimentation dominated by suspension settling from meltwater plumes and slight overconsolidation from ice-grounding during small readvances of a generally retreating glacier lead to a peculiar glacial-to-postglacial lithologic slope succession that eventually was buried by the Holocene sediment drape. During past earthquake shaking, the slopes that were stable under static loading conditions (factor of safety of 1.5–2) failed along planar sliding surfaces that developed at the lithological boundary between fine-grained, thinly-laminated, slightly underconsolidated cyclic plume deposits with low undrained shear strength values above and overconsolidated, glacially-deformed, glacio-lacustrine deposits with excessive formation pore pressure below. Measured in situ shear strength characteristics and sediment geometries were implemented into limit equilibrium models that allow for quantitative reconstruction of critical ground accelerations of past earthquakes in Central Switzerland. Results reveal seismic peak ground acceleration (PGA) of  0.08 g and  0.14 g for the historic 1601 A.D. Mw  6.2 earthquake and the prehistoric,  2220 cal yr B.P. earthquake, respectively. Additionally, results reveal that stability conditions change over relative short geological time scales because the postglacial sedimentation rate, which mainly controls the static weight of the slope sediment acting on the critical lithological boundary, turns out to be a key parameter in “charging” slopes susceptible to sliding.  相似文献

This study has used scanning electron microscopy coupled with X-ray micro-analysis to compare the morphology of diagenetic pyrite formed in the sediments of two contrasting Brazilian mangroves. The Sepetiba Bay site is influenced by marine conditions, and pore waters show lower dissolved iron and higher dissolved total sulfide concentrations. The Paraíba do Sul River site, on the other hand, is influenced by fluvial waters, and shows higher dissolved iron and lower dissolved sulfide concentrations in pore waters. At both sites, pore waters were oversaturated for pyrite, and pyrite morphology was similar. The finding that pyrite morphology was similar despite marked differences in pore-water chemistry can be explained by the low solubility product of pyrite and the daily exposure of surficial sediments to air, conditioned by tidal cycles. This implies that oxygen input to the sedimentary environment is a key factor in the pyrite formation mechanism.  相似文献
