Impact craters are among the most studied geomorphic planetary features because they yield information about the past geological processes and provide a tool for measuring relative ages of observed geologic formations. Surveying impact craters is an important task which traditionally has been achieved by means of visual inspection of images. The shear number of smaller craters present in high resolution images makes visual counting of such craters impractical. In this paper we present a method that brings together a novel, efficient crater identification algorithm with a data processing pipeline; together they enable a fully automatic detection of sub-km craters in large panchromatic images. The technical details of the method are described and its performance is evaluated using a large, 12.5 m/pixel image centered on the Nanedi Valles on Mars. The detection percentage of the method is ∼70%. The system detects over 35,000 craters in this image; average crater density is , but localized spots of much higher crater density are present. The method is designed to produce “million craters” global catalogs of sub-km craters on Mars and other planets wherever high resolution images are available. Such catalogs could be utilized for deriving high spatial resolution and high temporal precision stratigraphy on regional or even planetary scale. 相似文献

Using field measurements we evaluate a previously deduced semi-empirical model for the dampening of temperature fluctuations
in a circular tube. The measurements show that the model is a reasonably good approximation, and the previous recommendation
of using a tube length of the order of 1,000 times the inner diameter of the tube to remove most of the temperature fluctuations
seems to hold. Part of the difference between the empirical results and the model is possibly due to deviations from the idealized
conditions assumed in the model such as no inclusion of the influence from the ambient atmospheric stability. Limitations

is directly related to the parameterizations of the air–sea surface fluxes, these results will have an influence when calculating
the surface fluxes in weather and climate models. The global impact of this was estimated using re-analysis data from 1979
to 2001 and bulk parameterizations. The results show that the sum of the global latent and sensible mean heat fluxes increase
by 0.77 W m−2 or about 1% and the mean surface stress increase by 1.4 mN m−2 or 1.8% when including the effects of the boundary layer height in the parameterizations. However, some regions show a larger
response. The greatest impact is found over the tropical oceans between 30°S and 30°N. In this region the boundary layer height
influences the non-dimensional wind profile during extended periods of time. In the mid Indian Ocean this results in an increase
of the mean annual heat fluxes by 2.0 W m−2 and an increase of the mean annual surface stress by 2.6 mN m−2. 相似文献

Spectra of CO2 and water vapour fluctuations from measurements made in the marine atmospheric surface layer have been analyzed. A normalization
of spectra based on Monin–Obukhov similarity theory, originally developed for wind speed and temperature, has been successfully
extended also to CO2 and humidity spectra. The normalized CO2 spectra were observed to have somewhat larger contributions from low frequencies compared to humidity spectra during unstable
stratification. However, overall, the CO2 and humidity spectra showed good agreement as did the cospectra of vertical velocity with water vapour and CO2 respectively. During stable stratification the spectra and cospectra displayed a well-defined spectral gap separating the
mesoscale and small-scale turbulent fluctuations. Two-dimensional turbulence was suggested as a possible source for the mesoscale
fluctuations, which in combination with wave activity in the vertical wind is likely to explain the increase in the cospectral
energy for the corresponding frequency range. Prior to the analysis the turbulence time series of the density measurements
were converted to time series of mixing ratios relative to dry air. Some differences were observed when the spectra based
on the original density measurements were compared to the spectra based on the mixing ratio time series. It is thus recommended

The North Sea Basin contains an almost complete record of Cenozoic sedimentation, separated by clear regional unconformities. The changes in sediment characteristics, rate and source, and expression of the unconformities reflect the tectonic, eustatic and climatic changes that the North Sea and its margins have undergone. While the North Sea has been mapped locally, we present the first regional mapping of the Cenozoic sedimentary strata. Our study provides a new regional sub‐division of the main seismic units in the North Sea together with maps of depocentres, influx direction and source areas. Our study provides a regional synthesis of sedimentation based on a comprehensive interpretation of a regionally covering reflection seismic data set. We relate observations of sediment characteristics and unconformities to the geological evolution. The timing, regional expression and stratigraphic characteristics of many unconformities indicate that they were generated by eustatic sea‐level fall, often in conjunction with other processes. Early Cenozoic unconformities, however, relate to tectonism associated with the opening of the North Atlantic. From observation on a regional scale, we infer that the sediment influx into the North Sea during the Cenozoic is more complex than previously suggested clockwise rotation from early northwestern to late southern sources. The Shetland Platform supplied sediment continuously, although at varying rates, until the latest Cenozoic. Sedimentation around Norway changed from early Cenozoic influx from the southwestern margin, to almost exclusively from the southern margin in the Oligocene and from all of southern Norway in the latest Cenozoic. Thick Eocene deposits in the Central Graben are sourced mainly from a western and a likely southern source, indicating that prominent influx from the south did not only occur from the mid‐Miocene onwards. We infer a new age for the increased progradational sediment influx in the Pleistocene of 2.5 Ma, coeval with Fennoscandian glaciation. 相似文献

The need to adapt to climate change impacts, whilst simultaneously limiting greenhouse gas emissions, requires that the government’s efforts are joined by public action. In England and Wales, housing contributes significantly to the emissions and many properties are at risk of flooding. This paper investigates the preparedness of homeowners in England and Wales to make changes to their homes in response to the predicted effects of climate change. A telephone survey of 961 homeowners investigated their interest in purchasing mitigation and adaptation improvements against their concern about climate change, awareness of flood risk and attribution of responsibility for action. Whilst the majority of homes had some energy-saving improvements, few were found to have property-level flood protection. The high levels of awareness about climate change and flooding were coupled with the perception of risks as low. Whilst some respondents accepted personal responsibility for action, most believed that the authorities were responsible for flood protection, and would not pay the costs required to make their home more energy-efficient and better prepared for the eventuality of floods. The results suggest that there is scope for further improvement of energy-saving measures, and that the levels of adoption of flood-protection measures are very low. Multi-faceted strategies, including more effective communication of risks and responsibilities, incentives, and material support for the poorest, will need to be developed to overcome the current reluctance by homeowners to invest in flood-protection measures and further energy conservation solutions in the future. 相似文献

The thermal structure of subduction zones exerts a major influence on deep-seated mechanical and chemical processes controlling arc magmatism, seismicity, and global element cycles. Accretionary complexes exposed inland may comprise tectonic blocks with contrasting pressure–temperature (P–T) histories, making it possible to investigate the dynamics and thermal evolution of former subduction interfaces. With this aim, we present new Lu–Hf geochronological results for mafic rocks of the Halilba?? Complex (Anatolia) that evolved along different thermal gradients. Samples include a lawsonite–epidote blueschist, a lawsonite–epidote eclogite, and an epidote eclogite (all with counter-clockwise P–T paths), a prograde lawsonite blueschist with a “hairpin”-type P–T path, and a garnet amphibolite from the overlying sub-ophiolitic metamorphic sole. Equilibrium phase diagrams suggest that the garnet amphibolite formed at ~0.6–0.7 GPa and 800–850 °C, whereas the prograde lawsonite blueschist records burial from 2.1 GPa and 420 °C to 2.6 GPa and 520 °C. Well-defined Lu–Hf isochrons were obtained for the epidote eclogite (92.38 ± 0.22 Ma) and the lawsonite–epidote blueschist (90.19 ± 0.54 Ma), suggesting rapid garnet growth. The lawsonite–epidote eclogite (87.30 ± 0.39 Ma) and the prograde lawsonite blueschist (ca. 86 Ma) are younger, whereas the garnet amphibolite (104.5 ± 3.5 Ma) is older. Our data reveal a consistent trend of progressively decreasing geothermal gradient from granulite-facies conditions at ~104 Ma to the epidote-eclogite facies around 92 Ma, and the lawsonite blueschist-facies between 90 Ma and 86 Ma. Three Lu–Hf garnet dates (between 92 Ma and 87 Ma) weighted toward the growth of post-peak rims (as indicated by Lu distribution in garnet) suggest that the HP/LT rocks were exhumed continuously and not episodically. We infer that HP/LT metamorphic rocks within the Halilba?? Complex were subjected to continuous return flow, with “warm” rocks being exhumed during the tectonic burial of “cold” ones. Our results, combined with regional geological constraints, allow us to speculate that subduction started at a transform fault near a mid-oceanic spreading centre. Following its formation, this ancient subduction interface evolved thermally over more than 15 Myr, most likely as a result of heat dissipation rather than crustal underplating. 相似文献
