Four new irons are described; Buenaventura (IIIB) from Chihuahua, Mexico: mass 114 kg; Denver City (anomalous) from Texas, USA: mass 26.1 kg; Kinsella (IIIB) from Alberta, Canada: mass 3.7 kg; and Tacoma (IA) from Washington, USA: mass 17 g. Denver City is unique, i.e., not related to any other known iron. Tacoma is the smallest iron meteorite recorded. The flux of ammonia, phosphate, silica and radon-222 from Potomac tidal river and estuary sediments is controlled by processes occurring at the sediment-water interface and within surficial sediment. Calculated diffusive fluxes range between 0·6 and 6·5 mmol m?2 day?1 for ammonia, 0·020 and 0·30 mmol m?2 day?1 for phosphate, and 1·3 and 3·8 mmol m?2 day?1 for silica. Measured in situ fluxes range between 1 and 21 mmol m?2 day?1 for ammonia, 0·1 and 2·0 mmol m?2 day?1 for phosphate, and 2 and 19 mmol m?2 day?1 for silica. The ratio of in situ fluxes to diffusive fluxes (flux enhancement) varied between 1·6 and 5·2 in the tidal river, between 2·0 and 20 in the transition zone, and from 1·3 to 5·1 in the lower estuary. The large flux enhancements from transition zone sediments are attributed to macrofaunal irrigation. Nutrient flux enhancements are correlated with radon flux enhancements, suggesting that fluxes may originate from a common region and that nutrients are regenerated within the upper 10–20 cm of the sediment column.The low fluxes of phosphate from tidal viver sediments reflect the control benthic sediment exerts on phosphorus through sorption by sedimentary iron oxyhydroxides. In the tidal river, benthic fluxes of ammonia and phosphate equal one-half and one-third of the nutrient input of the Blue Plains sewage treatment plant. In the tidal Potomac River, benthic sediment regeneration supplies a significant fraction of the nutrients utilized by primary producers in the water column during the summer months. 相似文献

Over the past two decades development has been shifting its focus toward smaller scales and particular problems. As a result, the household has become an increasingly important institution for development, and has come under increased scrunity as development practitioners and scholars seek to better understand this institution’s functions and foundations, trying to ‘get the household right’. These efforts, rather than clarifying the character and the function of the household, have contributed to its indeterminacy by reifying the very institution they seek to analyse. Arguing that these efforts fundamentally miss the point of examining the household, this paper introduces a different framework of analysis that addresses the household not as a fixed object of research, but as a local construction that embodies flows of power and knowledge both within and transcending the local. Using the example of varying constructions of the household in two villages in Ghana’s Central Region, this article illustrates how such an approach allows us to address the various functions of the household as particular embodiments of these flows, an approach that better explains the endurance or ephemerality of these functions. Such an approach provides a stronger foundation for the consideration of how particular constructions of this institution may have troubling implications for issues like gender equity and sustainability. 相似文献

One dimensional magnetograph scans have been used to study the 5-min photospheric velocity oscillations and the supergranulation.

An improved scheme for measuring and analyzing the magnetic field of flares is presented in general outline form. The techniques employed during the last solar cycle are reviewed very briefly. The point is made that those techniques were inadequate due to fundamental limitations in the data. A realistic scheme for acquiring the necessary data is then proposed. The scheme is realistic in that it makes only those assumptions which appear to be indeed valid, and it presupposes only instrumental techniques which are presently available. The peculiar combination of a relatively short pulse period and a relatively weak surface dipole magnetic field strength of
binary radio pulsars finds a consistent explanation in terms of (i) decay of the surface dipole component of neutron-star
magnetic fields on a timescale of (2–5) × 106 yr, in combination with (ii) spin-up of the rotation of the neutron star during a subsequent mass-transfer phase.
The four known binary radio pulsars appear to fall into two different categories. Two of them, PSR 0655 + 64 and PSR 1913
+ 16, have short orbital periods (<25 h) and high mass functions, indicating companion masses 0.7M⊙ (∼1 (± 0.3) M⊙ and 1.4 M⊙, respectively). The other two, PSR 0820 + 02 and PSR 1953 + 29, have long orbital periods (117d),
nearly circular orbits, and low, almost identical mass functions of about 3×10-3 M⊙, suggesting companion masses of about 0.3M⊙. It is pointed out that these two classes of systems are expected to be formed by the later evolution of binaries consisting
of a neutron star and a normal companion star, in which the companion was (considerably) more massive than the neutron star,
or less massive than the neutron star, respectively. In the first case the companion of the neutron star in the final system
will be a massive white dwarf, in a circular orbit, or a neutron star in an eccentric orbit. In the second case the final
companion to the neutron star will be a low-mass (∼ 0.3 M⊙) helium white dwarf in a wide and nearly circular orbit.
In systems of the second type the neutron star was most probably formed by the accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf.
This explains in a natural way why PSR 1953 + 29 has a millisecond rotation period and PSR 0820 + 02 has not.
Among the binary models proposed for the formation of the 1.5-millisecond pulsar, the only ones that appear to be viable are
those in which the companion disappeared by coalescence with the neutron star. In such models the companion may have been
a red dwarf of mass 0.03M⊙, a neutron star, or a massive (>0.7M⊙) white dwarf. Only in the last-mentioned case is a position of the pulsar close to the galactic plane a natural consequence.
In the first-mentioned case the progenitor system most probably was a cataclysmic-variable binary in which the white dwarf
