Change and variability in the timing and magnitude of sea ice geophysical and thermodynamic state have consequences on many aspects of the arctic marine system. The changes in both the geophysical and thermodynamic state, and in particular the timing of the development of these states, have consequences throughout the marine system. In this paper we review the ??consequences?? of change in sea ice state on primary productivity, marine mammal habitats, and sea ice as a medium for storage and transport of contaminants and carbon exchange across the ocean-sea-ice-atmosphere interface based upon results from the International Polar Year. Pertinent results include: 1) conditions along ice edges can bring deep nutrient-rich ??pacific?? waters into nutrient-poor surface waters along the arctic coast, affecting local food webs; 2) both sea ice thermodynamic and dynamic processes ultimately affect ringed seal/polar bear habitats by controlling the timing, location and amount of surface deformation required for ringed seal and polar bear preferred habitat 3) the ice edges bordering open waters of flaw leads are areas of high biological production and are observed to be important beluga habitat. 4) exchange of climate-active gases, including CO2, is extremely active in sea ice environments, and the overall question of whether the Arctic Ocean is (or will be) a source or sink for CO2 will be dependent on the balance of competing climate-change feedbacks. 相似文献

A simulated sedimentary system, capable of being controlled and monitored for a considerable length of time without undue disturbance, has been assembled and applied to specific problems of the genesis of stratiform Pb‐Zn ore deposits. Results have been obtained relevant to: (i) the concentration of Pb and Zn from brines to underlying sediments; (ii) the behaviour of microorganisms in metal‐rich, highly saline environments; (iii) the precipitation diagenesis of calcium and magnesium carbonates; and (iv) the diagenesis of organic matter. The experiment has demonstrated the feasibility of simulating a complex sedimentary environment in the laboratory and has indicated the potential of such systems for the investigation of geobiological problems. 相似文献

Sound from an airborne source travels to a receiver beneath the sea surface via a geometric path that is most simply described using ray theory, where the atmosphere and the sea are assumed to be isospeed sound propagation media separated by a planar surface (the air-sea interface). This theoretical approach leads to the development of a time-frequency model for the signal received by a single underwater acoustic sensor and a time-delay model for the signals received by a pair of spatially separated underwater acoustic sensors. The validity of these models is verified using spatially averaged experimental data recorded from a linear array of hydrophones during various transits of a turboprop aircraft. The same approach is used to solve the inverse time-frequency problem, that is, estimation of the aircraft's speed, altitude, and propeller blade rate given the observed variation with time of the instantaneous frequency of the received signal. Similarly, the inverse time-delay problem is considered whereby the speed and altitude of the aircraft are estimated using the differential time-of-arrival information from each of two adjacent pairs of widely spaced hydrophones (with one hydrophone being common to each pair). It is found that the solutions to each of the inverse problems provide reliable estimates of the speed and altitude of the aircraft, with the inverse time-frequency method also providing an estimate that closely matches the actual propeller blade rate 相似文献

Assumptions about fluvial processes and process–form relations are made in general models and in many site-specific applications. Many standard assumptions about reach-scale flow resistance, bed-material entrainment thresholds and transport rates, and downstream hydraulic geometry involve one or other of two types of scale invariance: a parameter (e.g. critical Shields number) has the same value in all rivers, or doubling one variable causes a fixed proportional change in another variable in all circumstances (e.g. power-law hydraulic geometry). However, rivers vary greatly in size, gradient, and bed material, and many geomorphologists regard particular types of river as distinctive. This review examines the tension between universal scaling assumptions and perceived distinctions between different types of river. It identifies limits to scale invariance and departures from simple scaling, and illustrates them using large data sets spanning a wide range of conditions. Scaling considerations and data analysis support the commonly made distinction between coarse-bed and fine-bed reaches, whose different transport regimes can be traced to the different settling-velocity scalings for coarse and fine grains. They also help identify two end-member sub-types: steep shallow coarse-bed ‘torrents’ with distinctive flow-resistance scaling and increased entrainment threshold, and very large, low-gradient ‘mega rivers’ with predominantly suspended load, subdued secondary circulation, and extensive backwater conditions. © 2020 The Authors. Although airborne gravimetry is now considered a fully operational technique, errors due to motion compensation using differential
GPS (DGPS) continue to influence both its accuracy and the range of applications in which it can be used. In typical medium-resolution
applications such as airborne geoid mapping, errors due to DGPS contribute considerably to the error budget of an airborne
gravity system. At the same time, efforts to increase the resolution of such systems for demanding applications such as resource
exploration remain impedded by errors in DGPS.
This article has three objectives. The first one is to compare eight industrially relevant DGPS software packages for the
determination of aircraft acceleration. The second objective is to analyze and quantify the effect that each relevant portion
of the DGPS error budget has on the determination of acceleration. Using data sets that represent a wide range of operational
conditions, this is done in the frequency domain over a range of frequencies corresponding to spatial resolution as high as
450 m. The third objective is to use that information to recommend and demonstrate approaches that optimize the estimation
of aircraft acceleration for determining the geoid and for resource exploration.
It is shown, for example, that the time of day in which the survey is carried out and the dynamic characteristics of the aircraft
being used are two of the most crucial parameters for very high-resolution gravity field estimation. It is demonstrated that
when following the above-mentioned recommendations, agreements with ground daa of better than 1.5 and 2.5 mGal can be achieved

The Winnipeg and Deadwood formations form deep clastic reservoirs in Saskatchewan, Canada, with temperatures exceeding 40 °C over most of southern Saskatchewan and reaching 100 °C in southwestern Saskatchewan. At these temperatures, the formations have geothermal potential for development of direct use and electricity generation systems. Numerous disposal wells operating at rates of 30 L/s or more are currently installed in these formations, suggesting that electricity could be generated at rates exceeding 2 megawatts of electrical output (MWe) from individual wells. Complexation of copper added to seawater was determined by bacterial bioassay and fixedpotential amperometry. Consistent results were obtained by these two fundamentally different methods. The results of this study support the validity of both techniques and the field applicability of fixed-potential amperometry.The intercomparison studies were performed on samples collected at the N.Y.C. sewage sludge dumpsite and in relatively unpolluted coastal waters. We analysed a 25-year time series of fishery catch and effort data, and age/size information for four large-bodied, native fish species to investigate the hypotheses that under conditions of reduced freshwater inflows and high fishing pressure: (1) the structure of fish assemblages in the lower Murray River system have changed, (2) species diversity of fishes has declined and (3) population age structures of large-bodied, late-maturing, native fish (Macquaria ambigua, Argyrosomus japonicus, Rhombosolea tapirina and Acanthopagrus butcheri) have been reduced. Annual catches and effort in the lower Murray River system were stable for 25 years, but proportional contribution to the total catch from each of freshwater, estuarine and adjacent marine habitats, and the species within them varied. Fish assemblages generally differed between subsequent 5-year periods, with the exception of 1989–1993 when floods occurred in 4 out of 5 years, and the following 5-year period (1994–1998). Species richness declined steeply over 25 years in freshwater and estuarine habitat and species diversity (Hill’s H 2) also declined after 2001 in estuarine habitat. Species with rapid growth and early maturation (opportunistic strategists), increasingly dominated catches, whilst species with slow growth and late maturation (periodic strategists) declined. Truncated population age structures suggested longevity overfishing of three periodic strategist species: golden perch (M. ambigua), black bream (A. butcheri), mulloway (A. japonicus) and a fourth species with an intermediate strategy, greenback flounder (R. tapirina). This has implications for management because loss of older/larger individuals suggests reduced capacity to withstand or recover from deteriorated environmental conditions associated with a historically extreme drought in the lower Murray River system. Management of these species should seek to preserve the remnant population age structures and then to rebuild age structures by allowing recruits to become established in the adult population. We recommend that assessment of multi-species fisheries in changeable environments, such as occur in estuaries and other end-river environments, requires a suite of indicators that address changes in fish assemblages and populations. 相似文献

This paper is a demonstration of how the WKB approximation can be used to help solve the linearised 3D MHD equations. Using Charpit’s method and a Runge?–?Kutta numerical scheme, we have demonstrated this technique for a potential 3D magnetic null point, B=[x,ε y,?(ε+1)z]. Under our cold-plasma assumption, we have considered two types of wave propagation: fast magnetoacoustic and Alfvén waves. We find that the fast magnetoacoustic wave experiences refraction towards the magnetic null point and that the effect of this refraction depends upon the Alfvén speed profile. The wave and thus the wave energy accumulate at the null point. We have found that current buildup is exponential and the exponent is dependent upon ε. Thus, for the fast wave there is preferential heating at the null point. For the Alfvén wave, we find that the wave propagates along the field lines. For an Alfvén wave generated along the fan plane, the wave accumulates along the spine. For an Alfvén wave generated across the spine, the value of ε determines where the wave accumulation will occur: fan plane (ε=1), along the x-axis (0<ε<1) or along the y-axis (ε>1). We have shown analytically that currents build up exponentially, leading to preferential heating in these areas. The work described here highlights the importance of understanding the magnetic topology of the coronal magnetic field for the location of wave heating. 相似文献
