Limiting resources are generally available in brief temporal pulses in arid systems. We compared the abilities of dominant shrubs in a saltbush scrub community to capture N from pulses and evaluated whether N capture and partitioning within this community is influenced by the seasonal timing of pulses. Based on previous research in agronomic systems we predicted that the ability of a species to capture N following a pulse would depend on when the pulse occurred in relation to plant growth rate and N demand. Supporting this hypothesis, Atriplex confertifolia and Sarcobatus vermiculatus, which had greater growth rates early in the growing season compared to Atriplex parryi, captured more N from early spring pulses than A. parryi. Atriplex parryi, which had higher growth rates later in the growing season, captured more N from mid- and late spring pulses than the other species. These temporal differences in N capture among species, however, also depended on the magnitude of the N pulse. These results suggest that temporal variation in N availability may differentially impact competitive abilities of coexisting species and potentially facilitate species coexistence in arid systems.  相似文献

We describe an observational programme aimed at understanding the radio emission from distant, rapidly evolving galaxy populations. These observations were carried out at 1.4 and 8.5 GHz with the VLA, centred on the Hubble Deep Field, obtaining limiting flux densities of 40 and 8 μJy respectively. The differential count of the radio sources is marginally sub-Euclidean to the completeness limits(γ = − 2.4 ± 0.1) and fluctuation analysis suggests nearly 60 sources per arcmin2 at the 1 μJy level. Using high-resolution 1.4 GHz observations obtained with MERLIN, we resolve all radio sources detected in the VLA complete sample and measure a median angular size for the microjansky radio population of 1-2". This clue, coupled with the steep spectral index of the 1.4 GHz selected sample, suggests diffuse synchrotron radiation in z ∼ 1 galactic discs. The wide-field HST and ground-based optical exposures show that the radio sources are identified primarily with disc systems composed of irregulars, peculiars, interacting/merging galaxies and a few isolated field spirals. Only 20% of the radio sources can be attributed to AGN – the majority are probably associated with starburst activity. The available redshifts range from 0.1 to 3, with a mean of about 0.8. We are plrobably witnessing a major episode of starburst activity in these luminous (L > L *) systems, occasionallyaccompanied by an embedded AGN.About 20% of the radio sources remain unidentified to I = 26-28 inthe HDF and flanking fields. Several of these objectshave extremely red counterparts. We suggestthat these are high-redshift dusty protogalaxies. Methods for calculating, interpolating and idealising air flow in complex terrain are reviewed. Then the general structure of stratified airflow over a single hill of height H and length L1 is studied in detail and shown to be determined by the upwind velocity profile, the magnitude of a characteristic Froude number and the dimensions of the hill. Let N(L1) be the buoyancy frequency upwind at a height L1, and u* and U0 be the upwind friction and mean velocity respectively; then the flow is effectively neutral if u*/NL1>1. But if u*/NL1>1 and u0/NL1>1, the stratification is weak enough to affect the upwind turbulence and velocity profile but not the dynamics of the flow over the hill. If U0/NL1 <1 but U0/NH>1 the buoyancy forces are strong enough to affect the mean flow over the hill but not strong enough to prevent it passing over the top. In this regime the flow is very sensitive to the form of the upwind temperature profile. If U0/NH>1, much of the flow passes round the hill. A similar classification, with different flow patterns, is appropriate for unstably stratified flows. When the wind is weak enough, local slope winds can dominate. Results from the analysis of these different regimes are described and compared with laboratory of field measurements where possible. It is shown how some of these results can be extended to groups of hills.  相似文献

Some inherent limitations of the spatial interpolation method of identifying and interpreting channel adjustment are illustrated by a study of the River Derwent in Yorkshire. Here, cross-sections downstream from a river diversion appear to have contracted in size when compared with predictions based on upstream relationships between channel form variables and basin area. However, these sections are slightly larger than expected for their diminished discharge, suggesting that they have not fully adjusted to altered environmental conditions and are still in a transient state.  相似文献

Ecosystem-based management of marine fisheries requires the use of simulation modelling to investigate the system-level impact of candidate fisheries management strategies. However, testing of fundamental assumptions such as system structure or process formulations is rarely done. In this study, we compare the output of three different ecosystem models (Atlantis, Ecopath with Ecosim, and OSMOSE) applied to the same ecosystem (the southern Benguela), to explore which ecosystem effects of fishing are most sensitive to model uncertainty. We subjected the models to two contrasting fishing pressure scenarios, applying high fishing pressure to either small pelagic fish or to adult hake. We compared the resulting model behaviour at a system level, and also at the level of model groups. We analysed the outputs in terms of various commonly used ecosystem indicators, and found some similarities in the overall behaviour of the models, despite major differences in model formulation and assumptions. Direction of change in system-level indicators was consistent for all models under the hake pressure scenario, although discrepancies emerged under the small-pelagic-fish scenario. Studying biomass response of individual model groups was key to understanding more integrated system-level metrics. All three models are based on existing knowledge of the system, and the convergence of model results increases confidence in the robustness of the model outputs. Points of divergence in the model results suggest important areas of future study. The use of feeding guilds to provide indicators for fish species at an aggregated level was explored, and proved to be an interesting alternative to aggregation by trophic level.  相似文献

Previous research has identified the importance of the role of land cover in the global carbon cycle. In particular, forests have been identified as a significant carbon sink that can mitigate the rate of global climate change. Policy makers are faced with complex and difficult challenges in getting timely and useful information in monitoring global forest resources. Recent advances in the tools and methods of forest carbon accounting have produced new, innovative approaches to forest-based carbon inventories. But it is important as new tools are developed that scientists understand the needs of policy makers and that policy makers understand the capabilities and limitations of forest inventory methods. This paper explores four different policy applications that rely, or could benefit from, national carbon inventories. The goal is to help build a bridge between the communities of climate policy makers and scientists specialized in forest carbon inventories. To this end, we pursue three specific objectives: First we provide an overview for policy makers about approaches to forest carbon inventories, paying particular attention to the contributions of remote sensing technologies. Second, we outline the issues particularly relevant to forest inventory scientists who are interested in responding to public policy needs. We then discuss the tradeoffs between information cost, accuracy, precision, transparency and timeliness that need to be balanced in long-term monitoring of forest carbon. Finally, the article concludes with a series of observations and recommendations for the implementation of forest carbon inventories as increasingly central components of global climate change policy.  相似文献

Sheeting joints are extensive fractures that typically develop parallel to natural slopes. Embryonic sheeting joints initially constitute channels for water flow and then become the focus for weathering and sediment infill accompanied by progressive deterioration and dilation. Slabs of rock fail along them periodically because of their adverse orientation and long persistence. They are however rough and wavy and these characteristics contribute highly to their shear strength and improve their stability. This paper reviews several landslide case histories and on the basis of these provides guidelines for characterising sheeting joints and determining their shear strength. Engineering options for stabilising sheeting joints in natural and cut slope configurations are then examined with reference to case examples.  相似文献

Competition between taxa related to climate changes has been proposed as a possible factor in Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions, and here we present isotope evidence of the diets of three co-existing bear species [black bear (Ursus americanus), brown bear (Ursus arctos), and the now extinct short-faced bear (Arctodus simus)] from a locale in western North America dating to the Late (Terminal) Pleistocene (~14.5–11.7 ka). The three bear species were found at several sites on Vancouver Island, on the western coast of Canada. To examine the chronological overlap and niche partitioning between these species of bear, we used direct radiocarbon dating, stable isotope analysis and ZooMS proteomic identification methods. Here we present new radiocarbon evidence from Terminal Pleistocene U. americanus, U. arctos and A. simus from several sites on the island, along with both bulk collagen and compound-specific isotope data for these species. Radiocarbon dates confirm the chronological overlap of Arctodus and both Ursus species in the montane regions of the island at the end of the Pleistocene. Stable isotope data reveal niche differentiation between these species, with U. americanus occupying a distinctly lower trophic position than the other two taxa.  相似文献
