The authors attempt to answer two main questions concerning the population of Nigeria. First, since independence came to Nigeria, why has it been so difficult to take a census whose results are accepted as reliable? And second, will it be possible to carry out an accurate and uncontested census in the future? Our ability to identify thin non-stoichiometric and amorphous layers beneath mineral surfaces has been tested by undertaking X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) work on alkali feldspars from pH 1 dissolution experiments. The outcomes of this work were used to help interpret XPS and TEM results from alkali feldspars weathered for <10,000 years in soils overlying the Shap Granite (north-west England). The chemistry of effluent solutions indicates that silica-rich layers a few nanometers in thickness formed during the pH 1 experiments. These layers can be successfully identified by XPS and have lower Al/Si, Na/Si, K/Si and Ca/Si values than the outermost ∼9 nm of unweathered controls. Development of Al-Si non-stoichiometry is coupled with loss of crystal structure to produce amorphous layers that are identifiable by TEM where >∼2.5 nm thick, whereas the crystallinity of albite is retained despite leaching of Na to depths of tens to hundreds on nanometers. Integration of XPS data over the outermost 6-9 nm of naturally weathered Shap feldspars shows that they have stoichiometric Al/Si and K/Si ratios, which is consistent with findings of previous TEM work on the same material that they lack amorphous layers. There is some XPS evidence for loss of K from the outermost couple of nanometers of Shap orthoclase, and the possibility of leaching of Na from albite to greater depths cannot be excluded using the XPS or TEM results. This study demonstrates that the leached layer model, as formulated from laboratory experiments, is inapplicable to the weathering of alkali feldspars within acidic soils, which is an essentially stoichiometric reaction. 相似文献

A broad belt of Eocene flysch with limestone intercalations terminates eastward against a contemporaneous cross-structure and is affected by a zone of persistent overturning.

We present a numerical model of the dynamics of Lake Donuzlav, which enables one to perform simultaneous numerical analyses
of the currents, sea level, waves, and sediment transport. The model is based on the hydrodynamic block and the spectral wave
model. For typical storm situations, we study the specific features of the integral circulation of waters and the three-dimensional
structure of currents, investigate the wind-induced wave fields, and evaluate the flows of sediments and deformations of the
bottom. The presence of intense eddy structures is revealed in the field of currents caused by the bottom topography. A significant
intensification of waves in the south part of the lake is established in the case of penetration of storm waves through the
strait. It is shown that the account of waves leads to qualitative changes in the structure of circulation in the lake and
to the formation of well-pronounced areas of wave-induced elevations and lowerings of the sea level.

By using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data sets for 1951–2001, we study the characteristics of Pacific cyclones. It is shown that the northeast-southwest
direction is predominant in the displacements of cyclones in the North Pacific. We study the variability of the field of surface
atmospheric pressure in different phases of the Pacific decadal oscillation characterizing the temperature anomalies on the
surface of the ocean in the region bounded by 20 and 60°N. It is shown that the decadal variations of the North Atlantic Oscillation
supported by the large-scale anomalies of the Pacific decadal oscillation is the most important cause of natural decadal oscillations
in the European region. We study and evaluate the regional response to the Pacific decadal oscillation by using, as an example,
the analysis of variations of the discharge of European rivers.

Pockmarks in the inner Oslofjord,Norway 总被引:2,自引:3,他引:2
Multibeam bathymetric surveys of the Inner Oslofjord, Norway have revealed a high density of pockmarks in the 179-km2 inner fjord area, which contains over 500 pockmarks of varying size, typically 20–50 m in diameter and 2–10 m deep. These
pockmarks have been investigated with a variety of techniques, including acoustic subbottom profiling, sedimentological and
geochemical analyses of cores, remotely operated vehicle observation, and morphometry. Both the distribution and shapes of
the pockmarks suggest that they are related to structures in the bedrock underlying relatively thin (<50 m) unconsolidated
glacial and postglacial sediments. The data provide no direct indication of a particular mode of pockmark formation, but release
of large amounts of biogenic, shallow methane seems unlikely. Several lines of evidence point to a continuous process of pockmark
formation followed by inactivity, with some pockmarks recently active whereas others have been inactive for a considerable
time. Some pockmarks are characterised by coarse sediment in their centres. The density, variety and easy access make this
pockmark field an ideal model area for pockmark research.

This is the second part of a study conducted to determine whether polymeric sampling tubing can affect organic analyte concentrations during a sampling event. In this part of the study, we looked for sorption and desorption of tricholoroethylene (TCE) and leaching of organic constituents in water pumped through five types of polymeric tubing. The materials tested were a rigid fluoropolymer, a flexible fluoropolymer, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and two plasticized polypropylene tubings. The effects of tubing length and flow rate were examined.
The least sorptive tubings, both initially and at equilibrium, were the fluoropolymers. However, in some instances the LDPE tubing had little effect on TCE concentrations. This was when a slow flow rate was used to sample relatively shallow wells (50 feet [15 m] or less) or when a faster flow rate (1 L/min) was used to sample wells that are less than 500 feet (152 m). Further testing is recommended using more sorptive analytes.
Using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we were unable to detect any constituents leaching from any of the tubings used in these studies, even when a slow flow rate was used. However, desorption of sorbed analytes is a concern for all the tubings tested, including the rigid fluoropolymer. 相似文献

We study the processes of global self-regulation of Earth’s biota (GAIA-theory) by applying the method of adaptive balance of causes proposed by the authors. By using, as an example, the Daisy World model constructed by this method, we reveal the phenomenon of preservation of the mean temperature of Earth’s surface due
to the presence of the vegetation cover. We develop an integral model of global natural, social, and economic processes in
which the World Ocean is one of the factors regulating the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The decrease in the
amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere caused by the GAIA-effects increases the number of hurricanes and floods on the Earth. As a result, the levels of ecological and social hazards
for the mankind become much higher. To eliminate these threats, it is necessary to intensify the processes of self-organization
of the society realized via the improvement of education, development of science, and global regulation of the competition
for natural resources. We present the results of numerical experiments performed by using the model demonstrating possible
scenarios of global development with regard for the processes of self-organization of the society.

This paper studies time variations in the near-ground atmospheric electric field (Ez) at the geomagnetic latitude of 74° (Hornsund observatory) during polar substorms. Ez variations are compared with those in the potential drop across the polar cap (Up), according to SuperDARN radar observations. It is found that in the morning sector, time variations in Ez are strongly driven by time variations in the electrojet and almost do not depend on time variations in Up, which is presumably due to the penetration of the electric field of the electrojet into tropospheric altitudes. 相似文献
