The uptake and release of trace metals (Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Co) in estuaries are studied using river and sea end-member waters
and suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected from the Changjiang Estuary, China. The kinetics of adsorption and desorption
were studied in terms of environmental factors (pH, SPM loading, and salinity) and metal concentrations. The uptake of the
metals studied onto SPM occurred mostly within 10 h and reached an asymptotic value within 40 h in the Changjiang Estuary.
As low pH river water flows into the high pH seawater and the water become more alkaline as it approaches to the seaside of
estuary, metals adsorb more on SPM in higher pH water, thus, particulate phase transport of metal become increasingly important
in the seaward side of the estuary. The percentage of adsorption recovery and the distribution coefficients for trace metals
remained to be relatively invariable and a significant reduction only occurred in very high concentrations of metals (>0.1 mg L−1). The general effect of salinity on metal behavior was to decrease the degree of adsorption of Cu, Zn, Cd, Co, and Ni onto
SPM but to increase their adsorption equilibrium pH. The adsorption–desorption kinetics of trace metals were further investigated
using Kurbatov adsorption model. The model appears to be most useful for the metals showing the conservative behavior during
mixing of river and seawater in the estuary. Our work demonstrates that dissolved concentration of trace metals in estuary
can be modeled based on the metal concentration in SPM, pH and salinity using a Kurbatov adsorption model assuming the natural
SPM as a simple surfaced molecule. 相似文献

The carbonate-rock aquifer in the Great Valley, West Virginia, USA, was evaluated using a database of 687 sinkholes and 350
specific capacity tests to assess structural, lithologic, and topographic influences on the groundwater flow system. The enhanced
permeability of the aquifer is characterized in part by the many sinkholes, springs, and solutionally enlarged fractures throughout
the valley. Yet, vertical components of subsurface flow in this highly heterogeneous aquifer are currently not well understood.
To address this problem, this study examines the apparent relation between geologic features of the aquifer and two spatial
indices of enhanced permeability attributed to aquifer karstification: (1) the distribution of sinkholes and (2) the occurrence
of wells with relatively high specific capacity. Statistical results indicate that sinkholes (funnel and collapse) occur primarily
along cleavage and bedding planes parallel to subparallel to strike where lateral or downward vertical gradients are highest.
Conversely, high specific capacity values are common along prominent joints perpendicular or oblique to strike. The similarity
of the latter distribution to that of springs suggests these fractures are areas of upward-convergent flow. These differences
between sinkhole and high specific capacity distributions suggest vertical flow components are primarily controlled by the
orientation of geologic structure and associated subsurface fracturing. 相似文献

In an attempt to delineate heavy metal contamination precincts and to evaluate the extent and degree of toxic levels, besides
their possible sources, 38 water samples from Ankaleshwar Industrial Estate, south Gujarat, India were analyzed. By clutching
geochemical analyses and GIS-based colour composites areas depicting anomalously high concentration of heavy metals (Mo, Zn,
Pb, Ni, Co, Cd, etc.) in the groundwater were revealed. The multicomponent overlays in grey-scale facilitated in identifying
situates of heavy metal ‘hot spots’, and lateral protuberances of the contamination plume around defile stretch of the main
stream Amla Khadi flowing through the area. The multiple pollution plumes emerging from other parts of the area further coincide
with effluent laden streams and small channels indicating industrial establishments as major sources of groundwater contamination.
Influent nature of the streams, accelerated infiltration process, high mass influx and shallow groundwater table are the factors
conducive for easy access of heavy metals to the phreatic aquifers affecting over 20 km2 area. On the basis of P/U ratios (concentration of metals in polluted water to unpolluted water), geogenic and anthropogenic sources have been identified.
Very high levels of technogenic elements present in the ground water raise concerns about possible migration into food crops,
as the area is an important horticultural locale and is highly cultivated. 相似文献

The Linares region (southern Spain) has been subjected to two important sources of pollution: the intensive mining works and
the urban-industrial activity. To obtain a geochemical characterisation of the soil, 31 trace elements were analysed and 669
soil samples were collected. By means of clustering analysis, we identified groups of elements and grid squares in which relations
could be established concerning soil lithology, urban and industrial activities and the degree of pollution impact; in addition,
we were able to characterise the geochemical background of the study area. The multivariate study led us to identify four
factors. Particularly important was factor 2, which represented the elements associated with mineral paragenesis (Cu, Pb,
As, Co, Mn, Zn, Sn, Ba). This factor also contains elements related with an urban-industrial activity, such as Pb, Cu, Zn,
As and Ba. Furthermore, we identified factor 4, associating Ni, V and Cr, and which is related to the use of fuels. 相似文献

Over a period of 4 years and 4 months, the geopurification installations at Dehesas de Guadix (Granada, Spain) were monitored
to determine the impact on soil and groundwater of the controlled discharge of urban wastewater, and also to identify the
best indicators of the entry of the recharged water into the aquifer. The installations are located in an area where the climate
is Mediterranean sub-arid, with an average precipitation of less than 287 mm/year, and a rate of evapotranspiration that is
almost three times greater. The system was controlled by determining the balance of majority nutrients and boron in the soil
and in the groundwater, both at the points affected directly by the wastewater discharge and at others. The quantity of mass
discharged was relatively large (COD 14,656 g/m2, NO3 85 g/m2, NO2 4 g/m2, NH4 2,425 g/m2, PO4 1,143 g/m2, K 1,531 g/m2, B 63 g/m2). It was observed that the elimination of nutrients within the soil (COD 97.5%, PO4 94.4%, K 59.17%, N
total 18.8%, B 12.69%) was very efficient except for the nitrogen, which nevertheless did not reach the groundwater, as it was
eliminated at deep levels of the unsaturated zone. Only 12.69% of the boron was removed, and appreciable, increasing amounts
of this element did reach the groundwater. Unexpectedly, none of the majority nutrients behaved as a reliable indicator of
the impact on groundwater; despite this, the boron and the bicarbonate did clearly reflect the arrival of the recharged water,

This paper presents the results of a comparative study relating to the application of four vulnerability mapping methods,
GOD, AVI, DRASTIC and SINTACS, in a pilot detritic aquifer situated in NW Morocco, known as the Martil–Alila aquifer. The
principal objective of this work is to determine the most suitable such methods for this aquifer type within a Mediterranean
context, and to show the effect of the rainfall variations that are characteristic of the Mediterranean climate on the degree
of vulnerability. The methods applied distinguish five classes of vulnerability, these being irregularly divided up in space,
with the division varying according to the method in question. The vulnerability maps obtained by the different methods strongly
suggest that the eastern half of the aquifer is more vulnerable to contamination than the western half, for all hydrological
situations. The effect of climatic conditions on the degree of vulnerability is well represented by the DRASTIC, according
to which the aquifer is moderately to strongly vulnerable during humid hydrological years and weakly to moderately vulnerable
during dry ones. For the other methods, this climatic effect is limited to the area occupied by the two predominant classes
(“High” and “Low” for GOD and “High” and “Moderate” for SINTACS) while it is null for AVI. In conclusion, DRASTIC appears
the most suitable for mapping the vulnerability to contamination of Mediterranean coastal detritic aquifers such as the Martil–Alila

Mining heaps are used as archives for the investigation of weathering processes. Aim of this work was to investigate the different
weathering behavior of heap materials derived from Kupferschiefer mining with respect to environmental hazard. For this purpose,
Kupferschiefer and slag material of two heaps of different age were examined regarding to the radionuclide distribution and
geochemical composition. By measuring of the local dose rate, performing digital autoradiography and gamma spectrometry the
radiological load of the heaps and the heap materials was determined. The geochemical characterization of the samples was
performed by XRF, ICP–OES and ICP–MS. The results show a clear higher radionuclide load of the younger slag heap. A depletion
of chalcophile and lithophile elements in the older slag was determined. Apart from a homogeneous radionuclide distribution,
considerable radionuclide enrichments in fossil fragments could be proven. The results reveal a different weathering behavior
of slag material in comparison to the Kupferschiefer depending on the chemical binding of the elements on organic and inorganic
species. Natural organic matter as well as apatite in Kupferschiefer act as retention barrier for some metals. 相似文献

In the surroundings of Zaragoza, karstification processes are especially intense in covered karst areas where fluvial terraces
lie directly on Tertiary evaporites. Since the beginning of Quaternary, these processes have lead to the development of collapse
and subsidence dolines with a wide range of sizes, which have significant economic impacts. To reduce economic impact and
increase safety, a regional analysis of this phenomenon is needed for spatial management. Therefore, a probability map of
dolines was developed using logistic regression and geographic information system (GIS) techniques. This paper covers the
selection of input data, manipulation of data using the GIS technology, and the use of logistic regression to generate a doline
probability map. The primary variable in the doline development in this area is geomorphology, represented by the location
of endorheic areas and different terrace levels. Secondary variables are the presence of irrigation and the water table gradient. 相似文献

We propose a simple pressure test that can be used in the field to determine the effective permeability of existing wellbores.
Such tests are motivated by the need to understand and quantify leakage risks associated with geological storage of CO2 in mature sedimentary basins. If CO2 is injected into a deep geological formation, and the resulting CO2 plume encounters a wellbore, leakage may occur through various pathways in the “disturbed zone” surrounding the well casing.
The effective permeability of this composite zone, on the outside of the well casing, is an important parameter for models
of leakage. However, the data that exist on this key parameter do not exist in the open literature, and therefore specific
field tests need to be done in order to reduce the uncertainty inherent in the leakage estimates. The test designed and analyzed
herein is designed to measure effective wellbore permeability within a low-permeability caprock, bounded above and below by
permeable reservoirs, by pressurizing the reservoir below and measuring the response in the reservoir above. Alternatively,
a modified test can be performed within the caprock without directly contacting the reservoirs above and below. We use numerical
simulation to relate pressure response to effective well permeability and then evaluate the range of detection of the effective
permeability based on instrument measurement error and limits on fracture pressure. These results can guide field experiments

Investigations were carried out at three underground coal mines in India to study the response of surface structures to underground
blasting and the likelihood of damage to the structures. The structures in the vicinity of the underground blasting area were
single and multistoried residential houses. The amplitudes of vibration due to underground blasting were monitored simultaneously
on the ground surface near the foundation of the structures and on various floors of the structures. The vibrations were also
monitored near the important surface installations. It was observed that the magnitude of vibration in structures decreased
with the increase in the height of the structures. The frequency of blast vibration from underground blasting was higher than
the natural frequency of the structures. Little energy was transmitted into the structures, which caused reduction in the
vibration level in the structures. The reduction in the vibration levels was up to 45% in the houses. It indicates that the
dominant frequency of blast vibration plays an important role in persistence of vibration and its amplification or reduction
characteristics in the structures. This paper deals with the effect of the vibrations on structures/houses standing above
the blasting faces in underground workings and their potential to likely damage to the structures at different Indian geo-mining
