 The speciation of water dissolved in glasses along the join NaAlSi3O8-KAlSi3O8 has been investigated using infrared spectroscopy. Hydrous melts have been hydrothermally synthesized by chemical equilibration of cylinders of bubble-free anhydrous start glasses with water at 1040° C and 2 kbar. These melts have been isobarically and rapidly (200° C/s) “drop”-quenched to room temperature and then subsequently depressurized. The speciation of water in the quenched glasses reflects the state of water speciation at a temperature (the so-called fictive temperature) where the quenched-in structure of the glasses closely corresponds to the melt structure at equilibrium. This fictive temperature is detectable as the macroscopically measureable glass transition temperature of these melt compositions. A separate set of experiments using vesicular samples of the same chemistry has precisely defined the glass transition temperature of these melts (±5° C) on the basis of homogenization temperatures for water-filled fluid inclusions (Romano et al. 1994). The spectroscopic data on the speciation of water in these quenched glasses has been quantified using experimentally determined absorptivities for OH and H2O for each individual melt composition. The knowledge of glass transition temperatures, together with quantitative speciation data permits an analysis of the temperature dependence of the water speciation over the 113° C range of fictive temperatures obtained for these water-saturated melts. The variation of water speciation, cast as the equilibrium constant K where K = [H2O] [O m ]/[OH]2 is plotted versus the fictive temperature of the melt to obtain the temperature dependence of speciation. Such a plot describes a single linear trend of the logarithm of the equilibrium constant versus reciprocal temperature, implying that the exchange of K for Na has little influence on melt speciation of water. The enthalpy derived from temperature dependence is 36.5(±5) kJ/mol. The results indicate a large variation in speciation with temperature and an insensitivity of the speciation to the K–Na exchange. Structural, geomorphological, geophysical and volcanological data have been processed for the implementation of a dedicated GIS through which the structural evolution of the Pleistocene trachytic Cimini volcano (central Italy) has been reconstructed. The evolution of the Cimini complex includes three main close-in time phases: (1) intrusion of a shallow laccolith, rising along NW and NE trending faults and stagnating at the contact between the Mesozoic-Cenozoic and the Pliocene-Pleistocene sedimentary units constituting the bedrock of the volcano; (2) emplacement of lava domes along radial and tangential fractures formed by the swelling induced by the laccolith growth; (3) ignimbrite eruptions and final effusion of olivine-latitic lavas. Domes are both of Pelean and low lava dome type and their morphology was controlled by the location on the inclined surface of the swelled area. Some domes show to have uplifted upper Pliocene thermally metamorphosed clay sediments, suggesting a cryptodome-like growth. Comparison of the top of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic units with the top of the upper Pliocene-Pleistocene sedimentary complex, suggests that the laccolith emplaced in a graben of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic sedimentary complex filled by the Pliocene–Pleistocene sediments uplifted by the shallow intrusion. Stress patterns acting on the Cimini area have been deduced analysing the drainage network and the morphotectonic lineaments. Rose diagrams show a large dispersion of the lineaments reflecting the local presence of radial and tangential fractures. The most frequent extensional NW and NE trending lineaments have regional significance and controlled the magma uprise leading to the laccolith emplacement.  相似文献

This paper gives the results of a photometric study of star-like blue objects Nos. 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 discovered by Börngenet al. (1970) in the field of M31 and of the QSO OA 33. Three of these objects-Nos. 14, 16 and 17-exhibit variable light. No. 14 is a probable U Geminorum-star; No. 16 is a QSO and very likely also the No. 17. Finally, we suggest a candidate for the optical counterpart of OA 33.  相似文献

The presented study explores the prediction of soil water retention and its variability from soil texture and bulk density measurements, using a physically-based scaling technique. Specifically, the Arya–Paris (AP) physico-empirical model is applied to two soil datasets that are collected from two catchments located in different areas of Southern Italy. Laboratory-measured soil water retention functions are scaled to characterize soil variability. The laboratory-measured and AP-predicted reference water retention functions are compared by evaluating the lognormal distribution of derived scaling factors, relative to the mean reference retention function. Since the scaling theory assumes geometric similitude for the investigated soils, successful application of using particle-size distribution to estimate soil water retention requires separation of soils with different textures, using variance analysis. We conclude that variability in soil water retention can be determined from limited soil water retention data using the scaling approach when combined with particle-size distribution measurements. This method can potentially be used as an effective tool for identifying soil hydrologic response at catchment scales.  相似文献

The management of tourist harbors has traditionally been analyzed with little attention to managers’ awareness of the effects of their decisions on the environment. The aims of this paper were to assess managers’ perceptions of the main environmental risks in their regions and to identify common behaviors among the managers involved in eight tourist harbors in southern Italy, where the same tourist harbor is often managed by different managers. A questionnaire was administered and statistical analyses were performed to test differences between managers of big and small harbors. Managers showed a low perception of environmental risks and, surprisingly, in certain harbors, some meaningful cases were highlighted: the most homogeneous case, where all managers showed a reasonable level of environmental awareness, and cases with strong mismatches among managers. In this paper, we propose that an assessment of managers’ perceptions of risk be included as a new form of analysis when environmental risk assessments are carried out.  相似文献

In the 20th century an important industrial plant operated on the coastal area of Bagnoli. After its closing, an integrated study of environmental characterisation aimed at restoration started. The survey conducted was based on chemical and sedimentological analyses integrated with benthic foraminifera analyses. Statistical analysis of the data shows sectors with a distinct type and degree of pollution. Particularly, pollution linked to the silty sediment fraction, mainly due to Pb and Zn, was recognised in front of the southern sector of the plant. The study of benthic foraminifera provides evidence for a pollution-tolerant character in some species like Haynesina germanica and Quinqueloculina parvula. In addition, two species among the 113 recognised show high percentages of abnormal specimens. These percentages show a statistical correlation with some pollutants (PAHs, Mn, Pb and Zn). In addition, Energy Dispersive Spectrometry shows small amounts of Fe ions included in deformed tests of Miliolinella subrotunda. Because the number of these deformations is positively correlated to the concentration of PAHs, Mn and Zn, the inability of some specimens to exclude the foreign elements from the crystalline reticulum of the test could be attributed to the potential toxic effect of these pollutants.  相似文献

In this paper, the performance of a well known and widespread Boussinesq model is evaluated for its ability to predict deep waters and shoaling zone velocity and elevation, comparing them with laboratory data. The model evaluation places emphasis on the parameters of the wave field that could be used for the prediction of coastal phenomena. It was found that the model proved its ability to predict regular wave velocity and elevation both in deep waters and shoaling zones right up to the breaking region. In contrast to previous works found in literature, the comparisons in this case are not limited to modelled and measured wave elevations, but also involve horizontal velocities. As a result, experimental and computed time series of wave elevations and horizontal velocities and their corresponding phase-averaged values are investigated along the wave channel, showing a good performance of the model.  相似文献
