Boron is an important micronutrient for plants, but high B levels in soils are often responsible for toxicity effects in plants. It is therefore important to understand reactions that may affect B availability in soils. In this study, Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was employed to investigate mechanisms of boric acid (B(OH)3) and borate (B(OH)4) adsorption on hydrous ferric oxide (HFO). On the HFO surface, boric acid adsorbs via both physical adsorption (outer-sphere) and ligand exchange (inner-sphere) reactions. Both trigonal (boric acid) and tetrahedral (borate) boron are complexed on the HFO surface, and a mechanism where trigonal boric acid in solution reacts to form either trigonal or tetrahedral surface complexes is proposed based upon the spectroscopic results. The presence of outer-sphere boric acid complexes can be explained based on the Lewis acidity of the B metal center, and this complex has important implications for boron transport and availability. Outer-sphere boric acid is more likely to leach downward in soils in response to water flow. Outer-sphere boron would also be expected to be more available for plant uptake than more strongly bound boron complexes, and may more readily return to the soil solution when solution concentrations decrease.  相似文献

Edward Said laid some of the foundation stones for postcolonialism, but this project has — for the most part — ignored the pressing question of Palestine that has been the goad for so much of Said's own work. This essay discusses some of the ways in which, in the wake of September 11, the Israeli government of Ariel Sharon took advantage of the so-called "war on terrorism" to ratchet up the dispossession of the Palestinian people. It also seeks to show that imaginative geographies are never merely representations — they are also performances of space — and that, in this case (as in others), they have served to rationalise and radicalise colonial aggression, ultimately through the prosecution of a necropolitics.  相似文献

The Kinloch Hourn fault is the most prominent of a number of suspectedpostglacial faults in the western Scottish Highlands. These faults areinterpreted to have been reactivated by repeated large (M > 6)palaeoseismic events following deglaciation 10,000–13,000 years ago.Based on inferred deflections of drainage courses, previous studies of thefault have estimated 160 ± 40 m cumulative left-lateral displacementalong a 14 km long active segment during postglacial times. Reportedsoft-sediment deformation phenomena imply that activity on the KinlochHourn fault has persisted into the late Holocene, with the most recentmovement having been associated with a magnitude 5.5–6.0 surface-faultingevent between 3500 and 2400 years ago. The marked contrast betweensuch palaeoseismic activity and the present-day seismic quiescence ofwestern Scotland has stimulated this critical reappraisal of the KinlochHourn fault.This paper reassesses the key lines of evidence for postglacial fault activityand palaeoseismicty on the Kinloch Hourn fault, combining the analysis of1:15,000-scale air photos, field-based geomorphic mapping andpalaeoenvironmental investigations. Our reappraisal of inferred drainagedeflections across the fault contends that previous reports of significant(102 m) left-lateral slip on the fault during the Holocene arespurious. Instead, incidences of Holocene channel abandonment along thefault line are non-synchronous and probably reflect non-tectonic drainagechanges. The timing of soft-sediment deformation in the vicinity of the faultis revised to an early Holocene date (8990–8580 calendar years BP), whichis in accord with both the palaeoenvironmental history of the site andconsistent with published ages of earthquake-induced liquefactionphenomena documented elsewhere in western Scotland. An alleged recent(post-2400 radiocarbon years BP) ground rupture on the fault isquestioned in the light of uncertainty about both the nature of the faultedsoil deposit and the late Holocene age attributed to it.The study concludes that there is no convincing evidence for postglacialsurface rupture on the Kinloch Hourn fault and speculates that the casefor significant (101–102 m) postglacial movement on otherfaults in western Scotland may be similarly `unproven'.  相似文献

Despite spectacular landform evidence of a dominant role for glacial action in shaping landscapes under former northern hemisphere ice sheets, there is little quantitative evidence for rates and patterns of erosion associated with specific glaciations. Here we use cosmogenic nuclide data to assess rates of subglacial erosion underneath the Fennoscandian ice sheet. By testing whether there are remnant nuclide concentrations in samples taken from sites that include both relict areas and features and landscapes typically associated with vigorous glacial erosion, we can constrain the level and pattern of modification that resulted from the last glaciation. Cosmogenic 10Be and 36Cl data from the Torneträsk region confirm the temporal and spatial variability of glacial erosion suggested by geomorphological mapping. At some sites, glacial erosion estimates in what appear to be heavily scoured areas indicate erosion of only c. 2 ± 0.4 m of bedrock, based on cosmogenic nuclide inheritance. This implies that the generation of severely scoured terrain in this study area required multiple glaciations. The overall modification produced by ice sheets along glacial corridors may be more restricted than previously thought, or may have occurred preferentially during earlier Quaternary glacial periods.  相似文献

Seven samples of the unique St. Mesmin meteorite have been analyzed by instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis for Na, Ca, Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Ga, Ge, Se, In, Sm, Yb, Ir and Au. St. Mesmin is unique in being the only ordinary chondrite known to contain an unmelted xenolith of another ordinary chondrite. Data for two host matrix samples and three light clasts are consistent with their classification as LL chondrite material. The composition of the large dark xenolith confirms earlier evidence that it is an H chondrite; volatile abundances are consistent with it being highly shocked, petrologic type-4 material. In an olivine microporphyry, siderophile abundances are mostly about 0.13 times LL abundances, an apparent indication of metal loss during the shock melting which produced the clast. As in other regolithic chondrites, the dark host has higher contents of highly volatile elements than do the light clasts. We suggest that this results from a combination of differences in intensity of preexisting metamorphism as well as a redistribution of volatiles during regolith gardening.The H-group xenolith in St. Mesmin is a relatively recent addition to the parent body (< 1.4 Ga ago), but it is argued that this does not require regolith activity at that time. Rather the view is supported that the regolith period occurred very early in the meteorite's history (&gsim;4.0 Ga ago) and may have been related to the growth of the parent body. The H-group fragment may be part of the projectile whose impact excavated the St. Mesmin meteoroid from the LL parent body.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of an examination of the thermoluminescence (TL) of 23 meteorites which were observed to fall, and 17 meteorite finds which have had their terrestrial age determined by the14C method. The terrestrial ages of the observed falls range from 1 to 205 years, whilst the14C terrestrial ages range from 1200 ± 2000 to >20,000 years. A statistically significant correlation has been observed between the natural TL — as expressed as the ratio of the intensity of the low-temperature TL peak to that of the high-temperature peak — and the terrestrial age of the 40 meteorites. Furthermore, peak height ratios in excess of 3.0 are only observed in falls which fell within the last 250 years, suggesting that finds with peak height ratios as large as this, such as Allan Hills A77003 and Plainview (1917), fell within the last few hundred years. The present results are consistent with evidence that meteorite TL decay is a non-first-order process. The implications of the results for estimates of the terrestrial ages of 8 meteorite finds, for which there are no14C data, are also discussed.  相似文献

Homogeneous strain can be computed most easily by the methods of matrix algebra. Lines, planes and ellipsoids represented in matrix form can be homogeneously deformed by simple matrix multiplication by linear transformation matrices, the elements of which are the coefficients of the transformation equations. Deformation matrices or linear transformation matrices which cause geological-type homogeneous strain are divided into four classes based on the presence or absence of symmetry and/or orthogonality. The nature of the homogeneous strain caused by each class of deformation matrix is examined. Orthogonal-symmetrical and orthogonal matrices cause rotation. Symmetrical matrices cause irrotational strain with co-axial strain as a special case. Matrices which are neither orthogonal nor symmetrical cause many different types of rotational strain, some of which are examined.  相似文献
