The abundances of Fe, Ni, Co, Au, Ir, Ga, As and Mg have been determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis in 38 type 3 ordinary chondrites (10 of which may be paired) and 15 equilibrated chondrites. Classification of type 3 ordinary chondrites into the H, L and LL classes using oxygen isotopes and parameters which reflect oxidation state (Fa and Fs in the olivine and pyroxene and Co in kamacite) is difficult or impossible. Bulk compositional parameters, based on the equilibrated chondrites, have therefore been used to classify the type 3 chondrites. The distribution of the type 3 ordinary chondrites over the classes is very different from that of the equilibrated chondrites, the LL chondrites being more heavily represented. The type 3 ordinary chondrites contain 5 to 15 percent lower abundances of siderophile elements and a compilation of the present data and literature data indicates a small, systematic decrease in siderophile element concentration with decreasing petrologic type. The type 3 ordinary chondrites have, like the equilibrated ordinary chondrites, suffered a fractionation of their siderophile elements, but the loss of Ni in comparison with Au and Ir is greater for the type 3 chondrites. These siderophile element trends were established at the nebula phase of chondritic history and the co-variation with petrologic type implies onion-shell structures for the ordinary chondrite parent bodies. It is also clear that the relationship between the type 3 and the equilibrated ordinary chondrites involves more than simple, closed-system metamorphism.  相似文献

Samples of a type 3.4 chondrite have been annealed at 400–1000°C for 1–200 hours, their thermoluminescence properties determined and analyzed for K, Na, Mn, Sc and Ca by instrumental neutron activation analysis. After annealing at ?900°C, the samples showed a 50% decrease in TL sensitivity, while after annealing at 1000°C it fell to 0.1-0.01 times its unannealed value and loss of Na and K occurred. The TL and compositional changes resemble those observed for the equilibrated Kernouve chondrite after similar annealing treatments, except that the sharp TL decrease, and element loss, occurred at ~ 1100°C; this difference is presumably due to petrographic differences in the feldspar of the two meteorites. The temperature and the width of the TL peak showed a discontinuous increase after annealing at 800°C; peak temperature jumped from 130 to 200°C and peak width increased from 90 to 150°C. The activation energies for these TL changes are 7–10 kcal/mole. Similar increases in the TL peak temperature have been reported in TL studies of Amelia, VA, albite, where they were associated with the low to high-temperature transformation. However, the activation energy for the transformation is ~80 kcal/mole. These changes in TL emission characteristics resemble trends observed in type 3 ordinary chondrites and it is suggested that type 3.3–3.5 chondrites have a low-feldspar as TL phosphor and > 3.5 have high-feldspar as the phosphor. Thermoluminescence therefore provides a means of palaeothermometry for type 3 ordinary chondrites.  相似文献

Heat flow in the Sohm abyssal plain is measured to be 53 mW/m2 at an age of 163 Ma. This is 25% higher than predicted by conductive cooling models, even though the sediment-corrected basement depth of 6.5 km at this location is normal for its age. An analysis of existing heat flow, depth and geoid anomalies in the northwest Atlantic shows that there is little correlation between heat flow and depth throughout the entire region. Depth and geoid are clearly related to the Bermuda swell while the associated heat flow anomaly, once adjusted for variations with age, is limited to 5 mW/m2 and only decays to the south. This means that the Bermuda swell is probably not caused by extensive thermal reheating within the lithosphere, but instead by dynamic uplift at its lower boundary due to the convective upwelling of a mantle plume. The regionally high heat flow in the northwest Atlantic may be a thermal remanent of previous plumes which passed beneath this region early in its history. Therefore, depth and heat flow anomalies from this region cannot be used to provide constraints on steady-state parameters of the lithosphere, such as the presence or absence of a long-term boundary layer at its base.  相似文献

Five samples of the naturally unshocked Kernouve (H6) meteorite were artificially shock-loaded to pressures of 70, 165, 270, and 390 kbar and the silicates and metal examined optically, by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and by thermoluminescence (TL). Olivine deformation is closely comparable to that in naturally shocked meteorites, producing dislocations with Burgers vector [001]. At pressures of ?165 kbar, these are formed in well-defined slip planes. At 270 kbar, olivine develops optical mosaicism, has high dislocation densities throughout and is also highly fractured. Recovery, due to heating is minimal. In orthopyroxene, the deformation mechanism changes, from the clino-inversion to unit-dislocation slip, between 70 and 165 kbar. In diopside, (001) and (100) twinning was produced. Plagioclase is inferred to have been progressively converted to maskelynite, but some is still present in 270 kbar sample.The microhardness of the kamacite in the samples increases with shock pressure. The α? transformation pressure in the kamacite is 30–40 kbar higher than observed for iron meteorites. Annealed kamacite displays incipient polycrystallinity and α-martensite and taenite sometimes contains slip lines. Troilite acquired cracks, undulose extinction, twins, polycrystallinity and finally melted as the shock pressure increased.At pressures over 200 kbar there was a systematic decrease in the natural TL and the TL sensitivity. Detailed considerations of changes in the natural TLTL sensitivity ratio for various regions of the TL glow curve suggest that two processes were effective during shock; thermal drainage of electron traps and a reduction in the effective trap density. It is suggested that the latter process associated with the vitrification of feldspar, the TL phosphor.An additional sample was subjected to a shock pulse which was “spiked” instead of square. Very distinctive changes were apparent; thermal effects are conspicuous and with widespread annealing (~600–800°C) of metal and sulfide. Glassy, opaque veins were produced which are analogous to the black veins in shock-lithified gas-rich meteorites. Anomalous low-temperature TL was induced, suggesting that a new or modified phase or mineral has become the dominant TL phosphor.  相似文献

Streets named for Martin Luther King, Jr are common yet controversial features in cities across the United States. This paper analyses the politics of naming these streets as a 'scaling of memory'– a socially contested process of determining the geographic extent to which the civil rights leader should be memorialized. Debates over the scaling of King's memory revolve around the size of the named street, the street's level of prominence within a hierarchy of roads, and the degree to which the street transcends the spatial confines of the black community. A street-naming struggle in Eatonton, Georgia (USA) exposes how the scaling of memory can become a point of division and contest within the black community as activists seek to fulfil different political goals. Analysing these intra-racial contests allows for a fuller appreciation of the historical consciousness and geographic agency of African Americans rather than seeing them as a single, monolithic group.  相似文献

Pleistocene fluvial landforms and riparian ecosystems in central California responded to climate changes in the Sierra Nevada, yet the glacial history of the western Sierra remains largely unknown. Three glacial stages in the northwestern Sierra Nevada are documented by field mapping and cosmogenic radionuclide surface-exposure (CRSE) ages. Two CRSE ages of erratic boulders on an isolated till above Bear Valley provide a limiting minimum age of 76,400±3800 10Be yr. Another boulder age provides a limiting minimum age of 48,800±3200 10Be yr for a broad-crested moraine ridge within Bear Valley. Three CRSE ages producing an average age of 18,600±1180 yr were drawn from two boulders near a sharp-crested bouldery lateral moraine that represents an extensive Tioga glaciation in Bear Valley. Nine CRSE ages from striated bedrock along a steep valley transect average 14,100±1500 yr and suggest rapid late-glacial ice retreat from lower Fordyce Canyon with no subsequent extensive glaciations. These ages are generally consistent with glacial and pluvial records in east-central California and Nevada.  相似文献
