An important control on magma rheology is the extent to which the magma crystallizes during ascent as a result of the effective undercooling created by volatile exsolution. To assess this undercooling, we need to know the final (anhydrous) one-atmosphere phase relations of silicic magmas. For this reason, we have performed one-atmosphere controlled-fO2 crystallization experiments on dacitic to rhyolitic melt compositions (67–78 wt% SiO2) and determined equilibrium phase assemblages, melt fractions, and some phase compositions over a range of temperatures. Experiments were run at oxygen fugacities between NNO+1 and NNO+2 and temperatures of 1,000 to 1,250°C. Constant phase compositions and sample crystallinities in runs longer than 3.5 days suggest that these runs closely approached compositional equilibrium. Additionally, melting experiments with similar compositions yielded results closely resembling those obtained in crystallization experiments. All samples have liquidus temperatures between 1,250 and 1,200 °C, with plagioclase the liquidus phase for the two most mafic samples and quartz for the most silicic sample. When associated glass compositions are projected into the Qz-Ab-Or system they define a revised one-atmosphere quartz-feldspar cotectic 5–10% less quartz normative than previously estimated. Glass compositions from each sample plot along this cotectic between 1,100 and 1,000 °C, consistent with the plagioclase-quartz co-crystallization textures found in runs at these temperatures. This cotectic constrains glass compositions to a maximum silica content of 76±1 wt% SiO2. Reported glass compositions in excess of 77 wt% SiO2 in volcanic samples suggest non-equilibrium crystallization, perhaps a consequence of large melt undercoolings.Editorial responsibility: I. ABSTRACT Peri-urban areas are the interface between urban and rural regions, with these regions traditionally acting as foodbowls for adjacent urban areas. This peri-urban agriculture provides a diverse suite of benefits to urban areas. Increasingly, however, peri-urban areas are being converted to residential uses, driven in part by higher land values secured for land converted for residential development. In Sydney, planning and development has tended to treat peri-urban areas as ‘suburbs in waiting’. Using a Foucauldian governmentality approach, this paper investigates the prevailing rationalities in metropolitan-level strategic planning documents—in particular A Plan for Growing Sydney and the Draft South West District Plan—and how these rationalities relate to peri-urban agriculture. Our analysis shows that the three overarching rationalities—the global city, the compact city and the sustainability agenda—frame the urbanisation of peri-urban agricultural lands as necessary and inevitable, and only integrate agriculture as part of the future of the city of Sydney when it can be rationalised within the ‘global city’ narrative. As a result, peri-urban areas are not considered to have unique planning needs, but are imagined as latent spaces that will enable Sydney to meet its housing and job targets through their future development. 相似文献

Early Miocene benthic foraminifera and biostratigraphy of the Qom Formation, Deh Namak, Central Iran
A total of 165 samples were collected from the Qom Formation investigated in a stratigraphic section north of Deh Namak, in Central Iran. From these, 35 genera and 47 species of benthic foraminifera were identified. The age of the studied section is Early Miocene (Aquitanian to Early Burdigalian) based on the occurrence of Borelis melo curdica, Meandropsina anahensis, Meandropsina iranica, Elphidium sp. 14, Peneroplis farsensis, and Triloculina tricarinata. The thickness of the Qom Formation is 401 m of which 161.2 m is early Burdigalian in age. Foraminiferal assemblages in the Deh Namak section are referable to the Borelis melo group-Meandropsina iranica Assemblage Zone and Miogypsinoides-Archaias-Valvulinid Assemblage Zone of [Adams, T.D., Bourgeois, F., 1967. Predictions of association constants for ion-pair formation in seawater were compared to measured constants as a test for the existence of ion-pairs. A fair agreement was obtained in most cases, although the theoretical electrostatic calculations indicate that significant chloride ion-pairing should occur which has not been observed in most experimental investigations. 相似文献

High-cadence, high-resolution magnetograms have shown that the quiet-Sun photosphere is very dynamic in nature. It is comprised
of discrete magnetic fragments which are characterized by four key processes – emergence, coalescence, fragmentation and cancellation.
All of this will have consequences for the magnetic field in the corona above.
The aim of this study is to gauge the effect of the behavior of the photospheric flux fragments on the quiet-Sun corona. By
considering a sequence of observed magnetograms, photospheric flux fragments are represented by a series of point sources
and the resulting potential field arising from them is examined. It is found that the quiet-Sun coronal flux is generally
recycled on time scales considerably shorter than the corresponding time scales for the recycling of photospheric flux. From
the motions of photospheric fragments alone, a recycling time of coronal flux of around 3 h is found. However, it is found
that the amount of reconnection driven by the motions of fragments is comparable to the amount driven by emergence and cancellation
of flux, resulting in a net flux replacement time for the corona of only 1.4 h.
The technique used in this study was briefly presented in a short research letter (R. M. Close et al., Astrophys. J., 612, L81, 2004); here the technique is discussed in far greater depth. Furthermore, an estimate is made of the currents required
to flow along separator field lines in order to sustain the observed heating rates (assuming separator reconnection is the

The fundamental frequencies of the non-radial mode of oscillation belonging to the second harmonic (l=2) of magnetically distorted polytropic gas spheres are evaluated in the second approximation by a variational method. The magnetic field is assumed to have both the toroidal and the poloidal components. We find that the frequencies of oscillation are increased due to the presence of the magnetic field and that these depend only slightly on the value of , the ratio of the specific heats. We have also determined the value of <1+1/n for the mode of oscillation which exhibits convective instability. Acidic, metal-rich waters produced by the oxidative weathering and resulting leaching of major and trace elements from pyritic rocks can adversely affect water quality in receiving streams and riparian ecosystems. Five study areas in the southern Rocky Mountains with naturally acidic waters associated with porphyry mineralization were studied to document variations in water chemistry and processes that control the chemical variations. Study areas include the Upper Animas River watershed, East Alpine Gulch, Mount Emmons, and Handcart Gulch in Colorado and the Red River in New Mexico. Although host-rock lithologies in all these areas range from Precambrian gneisses to Cretaceous sedimentary units to Tertiary volcanic complexes, the mineralization is Tertiary in age and associated with intermediate to felsic composition, porphyritic plutons. Pyrite is ubiquitous, ranging from ∼1 to >5 vol.%. Springs and headwater streams have pH values as low as 2.6, SO4 up to 3700 mg/L and high dissolved metal concentrations (for example: Fe up to 400 mg/L; Cu up to 3.5 mg/L; and Zn up to 14.4 mg/L). Intensity of hydrothermal alteration and presence of sulfides are the primary controls of water chemistry of these naturally acidic waters. Subbasins underlain by intensely hydrothermally altered lithologies are poorly vegetated and quite susceptible to storm-induced surface runoff. Within the Red River study area, results from a storm runoff study documented downstream changes in river chemistry: pH decreased from 7.80 to 4.83, alkalinity decreased from 49.4 to <1 mg/L, SO4 increased from 162 to 314 mg/L, dissolved Fe increased from to 0.011 to 0.596 mg/L, and dissolved Zn increased from 0.056 to 0.607 mg/L. Compared to mine drainage in the same study areas, the chemistry of naturally acidic waters tends to overlap but not reach the extreme concentrations of metals and acidity as some mine waters. The chemistry of waters draining these mineralized but unmined areas can be used to estimate premining conditions at sites with similar geologic and hydrologic conditions. For example, the US Geological Survey was asked to estimate premining ground-water chemistry at the Questa Mo mine, and the proximal analog approach was used because a mineralized but unmined area was located adjacent to the mine property. By comparing and contrasting water chemistry from different porphyry mineralized areas, this study not only documents the range in concentrations of constituents of interest but also provides insight into the primary controls of water chemistry. 相似文献
