A large data set, collected under the national Danish monitoring program, was used to evaluate the importance of photon flux density (PFD), relative wave exposure (REI), littoral slope, and salinity in regulating eelgrass cover at different depth intervals in Danish coastal waters. Average eelgrass cover exhibited a bell-shaped pattern with depth, reflecting that different factors regulate eelgrass cover at shallow- and deep-water sites. The multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify regulating factors and determine their role in relation to eelgrass cover at different depth intervals. PFD, REI, and salinity were main factors affecting eelgrass cover while littoral slope had no significant effect. Eelgrass cover increased with increasing PFD at water depths of more than 2 m, while cover was in versely related to REI in shallow water. This pattern favored eelgrass cover at intermediate depths where levels of PFD and REI were moderate. Salinity had a minor, but significant, effect on eelgrass cover that is most likely related to the varying costs of osmoregulation with changing salinity. The analysis provided a useful conceptual framework for understanding the factors that regulate eelgrass abundance with depth. Although the regression model was statistically significant and included the factors generally considered most important in regulating eelgrass cover, its explanatory power was low, especially in shallow water. The largest discrepancies between predicted and observed values of cover appeared in cases where no eelgrass occurred despite sufficient light and moderate levels of exposure (almost 50% of all observations). These discrepancies suggest that population losses due to stochastic phenomena, such as extreme wind events, played an important regulating role that is not adequately described by average exposure levels. A more thorough knowledge of the importance of such loss processes and the time scales involved in recovery of seagrass populations after a severe disturbance are necessary if we are to understand the regulation of seagrass distribution in shallow coastal areas more fully.  相似文献

The distribution of halogens in various fractions of humic substances (HS), separated by their molecular weight, was found to be different for the different halogens. This was demonstrated for chlorine, bromine, and iodine in sewage and brown water samples by applying inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry coupled with size‐exclusion chromatography. Quantification of the different fractions of iodinated humic substances was obtained by quadrupole mass spectrometry in connection with the isotope dilution technique using an 129I‐enriched spike solution. Quantitative analysis was not possible for the corresponding chlorine and bromine species because of spectrometric interferences in the quadrupole instrument. The ageing of HS/halogen species was followed with respect to possible transformations of these species in a ground and sewage water sample up to eight weeks. Even if a distinct structural variation of the humic substance was observed with time by measuring the UV absorption, chlorine remained in the same molecular weight fraction and only a small change was found for the HS/bromine species after eight weeks. In contrast to these findings a substantial transformation of HS/iodine compounds took place, which demonstrated that the transfer probability of halogens from one to another HS fraction is increased with decreasing strength of the halogen bond to carbon. By comparing the results of an original sewage water sample with a filtered one and with another one which was enriched by microorganisms cultivated from the same original sample, a strong microbiological influence on the transformation of HS/iodine species was found. A quantitative balance of the corresponding HS/iodine fractions was calculated for an ageing period of eight weeks showing that iodine was preferably transferred to newly formed UV active HS substances of high molecular weight. The results of a simultaneous solution for the orbital elements of Moon and planets are given and their derivation is discussed. A modern Cowell integrator is used for orbit computations, and least-squares fits are made to some 40000 optical observations taken since 1913. The model includes relativistic terms, the leading zonal harmonics of Earth and Moon, the precession of the lunar equator, and the tidal couple between Earth and Moon. The tidal term in the Moon's mean longitude is found to be –19±4 per century squared. The solution also yields an extrapolation of the atomic time scale back to 1912.5. At that time, the difference between atomic and ephemeris time is about 6±2 s. Lunar declinations observed by the Washington transit circles, after receiving limb corrections and thus with respect to the center of Watts' reference sphere, are smaller than computed values by 0.33±0.01. It is found that solar oblateness cannot quite be determined with optical data covering about 50 yr, butJ 2 is unlikely to be much larger than 10–5. The advance of Mercury's perihelion is verified to within our resolution of 2 per century to match that predicted by Einstein.The solution presented here is believed to be the only simultaneous improvement of the orbits of Moon and planets. This simultaneity is found to be an essential feature in separating the Moon's mean motion, the lunar tidal deceleration, and the corrections to the Earth rotation rate. It is now possible to refer all astronomical events of the past 60 yr to a time with uniform rate, namely the atomic clock system. Considering the long baseline, this model should facilitate the prediction of fast variables, such as the lunar longitude, with considerably increased confidence. The planetary orbital elements compete with efforts of similar scope and accuracy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  相似文献

Sewage effluent input and population were chosen as predictors of microplastic presence in sediments at four sites in the River Thames basin (UK). Large microplastic particles (1 mm–4 mm) were extracted using a stepwise approach to include visual extraction, flotation and identification using Raman spectroscopy. Microplastics were found at all four sites. One site had significantly higher numbers of microplastics than other sites, average 66 particles 100 g? 1, 91% of which were fragments. This site was downstream of a storm drain outfall receiving urban runoff; many of the fragments at this site were determined to be derived of thermoplastic road-surface marking paints. At the remaining three sites, fibres were the dominant particle type. The most common polymers identified included polypropylene, polyester and polyarylsulphone. This study describes two major new findings: presence of microplastic particles in a UK freshwater system and identification of road marking paints as a source of microplastics.

Series of sensitivity tests were performed with a z-coordinate, global eddy-permitting (1/4°) ocean/sea-ice model (the ORCA-R025 model configuration developed for the DRAKKAR project) to carefully evaluate the impact of recent state-of-the-art numerical schemes on model solutions. The combination of an energy–enstrophy conserving (EEN) scheme for momentum advection with a partial step (PS) representation of the bottom topography yields significant improvements in the mean circulation. Well known biases in the representation of western boundary currents, such as in the Atlantic the detachment of the Gulf Stream, the path of the North Atlantic Current, the location of the Confluence, and the strength of the Zapiola Eddy in the south Atlantic, are partly corrected. Similar improvements are found in the Pacific, Indian, and Southern Oceans, and characteristics of the mean flow are generally much closer to observations. Comparisons with other state-of-the-art models show that the ORCA-R025 configuration generally performs better at similar resolution. In addition, the model solution is often comparable to solutions obtained at 1/6 or 1/10° resolution in some aspects concerning mean flow patterns and distribution of eddy kinetic energy. Although the reasons for these improvements are not analyzed in detail in this paper, evidence is shown that the combination of EEN with PS reduces numerical noise near the bottom, which is likely to affect current–topography interactions in a systematic way. We conclude that significant corrections of the mean biases presently seen in general circulation model solutions at eddy-permitting resolution can still be expected from the development of numerical methods, which represent an alternative to increasing resolution.  相似文献

Ocean circulation models do not generally exhibit equatorial deep jets (EDJs), even though EDJs are a recognised feature of the observed ocean circulation along the equator and they are thought to be important for tracer transport along the equator and even equatorial climate. EDJs are nevertheless found in nonlinear primitive equation models with idealised box geometry. Here we analyse several such model runs. We note that the variability of the zonal velocity in the model is dominated by the gravest linear equatorial basin mode for a wide range of baroclinic vertical normal modes and that the EDJs in the model are dominated by energy contained in vertical modes between 10 and 20. The emergence of the EDJs is shown to involve the linear superposition of several such neighbouring basin modes. Furthermore, the phase of these basin modes is set at the start of the model run and, in the case of the reference experiment, the same basin modes can be found in a companion experiment in which the amplitude of the forcing has been reduced by a factor of 1000. We also argue that following the spin-up, energy must be transferred between different vertical modes. This is because the model simulations are dominated by downward phase propagation following the spin-up whereas our reconstructions imply episodes of upward and downward propagation. The transfer of energy between the vertical modes is associated with a decadal modulation of the EDJs.  相似文献

The chironomid Corynocera ambigua (Tanytarsini) is commonly reported as a cold-stenothermal species living in shallow lakes in arctic and subarctic regions. In palaeoecological studies of temperate lakes, larval remains of C. ambigua are usually found in late-glacial sediments from the Allerød and Younger Dryas periods, and often in association with subfossil Chara oospores. During a surface sampling program of chironomid head-capsules in 41 Danish temperate lakes, C. ambigua was found to comprise 25% of the chironomid assemblages in two lakes, and was sporadically found in 8 other lakes (0.5-10%). A 70 cm palaeo-stratigraphy from the shallow (max depth 1.2 m) and eutrophic (total phosphorus = 150 g P l-1) Lake Stigsholm showed that C. ambigua has been abundant in the last 4-5 centuries. At a sediment level of 25 cm (~year 1925, 210Pb dating), C. ambigua began to decrease in frequency while Chironomus plumosus, Procladius sp., Cladotanytarsus gr. mancus and Tanytarsus spp. increased, suggesting an increased nutrient loading and an approach to eutrophic conditions. In 1995 C. ambigua was still very abundant in Lake Stigsholm but in early March 1997 no living larvae were found. An extremely heavy growth of Elodea, Enteromorpha and filamentous algae in the summers of 1995 and 1996, with following degradation in the fall, might have influenced the invertebrate population dynamics. No significant distinguishing characteristics were found for the lakes supporting C. ambigua. Its occurrence in warm (~20°C) Danish lakes brings into question the perception of the species as being cold-stenothermal.  相似文献

Summary. Available seismic refraction data from three different continental areas, northern Britain and the eastern and western United States, has been studied for possible Pn , velocity anisotropy using the methods described by Bamford. There are various deficiencies in the time—distance data used in each case but, while the uppermost mantle beneath northern Britain and the eastern United States seems to be isotropic within the limits of measurement error, there is a small but significant anisotropy beneath the western United States.
Both the amount (up to 3 per cent) and the direction (70–80° east of north) of this anisotropy are very similar to the results obtained in the Pacific Ocean off California. We tentatively conclude that this anisotropy is present as a consequence of the subduction of oceanic lithosphere beneath the western United States.  相似文献
