: Lake Neuchâtel (Switzerland) has been recovering from human-induced eutrophication since 1982. Oligochaetes and chironomid larvae were used to monitor the recovery of sediment at a depth of 40 m. In oligochaete communities, the mean proportion of individuals belonging to species indicative of oligotrophic conditions (mostly Spirosperma velutinus and Stylodrilus heringianus) increased from 16 % in 1984 to 33 % in 1992, but decreased to 11 % in 1997. Based on oligochaetes, benthic conditions deteriorated in 1997 whereas, based on the increase of oligotrophic chironomids (mostly Micropsectra), they improved. This difference was attributed to the impact of large planktonic algae whose sedimentation had altered oxygen concentrations at the water-sediment interface. Oligochaetes were more affected than chironomids because they are less mobile and they depend more on the inner sediment for their food and reproduction than the latter. However, based on the combined response of oligochaetes and chironomids, benthic recovery was stalled in 1997 but was not reversed.  相似文献

In this paper it is proposed to quantify the importance of some physical parameters responsible for stone decay on monuments. The most common decay process is the crystallisation of salt near the surface of the rocks or inside their porous network. Therefore, the water balance in rocks submitted to these special saturation and position conditions has been studied specifically, using the general concepts of water transfer in unsaturated porous media, and using the capillary imbibition kinetics of different rocks. Different parameters have been taken into account for the calculation of the salt crystallisation position: on one hand, several external parameters such as relative humidity, air convection and the presence of solute in solution, and on the other hand, the intrinsic water transfer properties of the rocks. Their relative importance is discussed, considering the potential values that each parameter can reach in nature.  相似文献

In Volubilis, Roman mosaics are very beautiful and reveal, from the bottom to the surface, three layers: (i) ‘hedgehog’ layer, (ii) coarse grain mortar layer (rudus + nucleus) and (iii) tesselatum. Mineralogical analysis of coarse grain mortar sampled in Flavius Germanus mosaic shows that it consisted of quartz and calcite, with some feldspar and probably mica and dolomite. Fine-grained mortar in tesselatum is made from a mixture of calcite and quartz only. Limestone tesserae (white, pink and brown) show petrographic facies that change from micritic to oolithic limestone. Conversely, black and brick red tesserae are respectively made of marble, red sandstone and from fire clay. A geophysical survey in the eastern Gulf of Aden, between the Alula–Fartak (52°E) and the Socotra (55°E) transform faults, was carried out during the Encens–Sheba cruise. The conjugate margins of the Gulf are steep, narrow and asymmetric. Asymmetry of the rifting process is highlighted by the conjugate margins (horst and graben in the north and deep basin in the south). Two transfer fault zones separate the margins into three segments, whereas the present‐day Sheba Ridge is divided into two segments by a transform discontinuity. Therefore segmentation of the Sheba Ridge and that of the conjugate margins did coincide during the early stages of oceanic spreading. Extensive magma production is evidenced in the central part of the western segment. Anomaly 5d was identified in the northern and southern parts of the oceanic basin, thus confirming that seafloor spreading in this part of Gulf of Aden started at least 17.6 Ma ago.  相似文献

Organic carbon (OC) and nitrogen (N) contents and δ13C and δ15N values in total organic matter (OM) were measured in sub-surface sediments (0–30 cm sub-bottom) from 21 cores raised from the Laurentian Channel of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Labrador Sea, to document OM fluxes and storage along the eastern Canadian margin. Storage rates as high as 2.5 g m−2 yr−1 for OC and 0.2 g m−2 yr−1 for N are observed in the Laurentian Channel, suggesting that the shelf plays a significant role in terms of OM storage (from 1 to 2% of the primary production). Based on the isotopic composition of the essentially marine OM of the Labrador Sea (δ13C/V-PDB=−21.9±0.4‰; δ15N/AIR=7.6±0.6‰; n=12), there is no isotopic evidence for a significant relative input of terrestrial OM along the Laurentian Channel (δ13C/V-PDB=−21.9±0.4‰; δ15N/AIR=8.0±0.9‰; n=10), either due to high relative fluxes of marine OM and/or to the trapping of continental OM in the estuary and upstream. High storage rates of OM are also observed on the continental rise of the Labrador Sea (as high as 1.1 g C m−2 yr−1 and 0.09 g N m−2 yr−1). They contrast with one order of magnitude lower rates on the slope, due to low sedimentation rates (SR) and sediment winnowing by the Western Boundary Undercurrent (WBUC). Reduced early diagenetic alteration of OM is observed, particularly in the Laurentian Channel. It results in discrete (i) losses of OC and N, (ii) shifts in C/N ratios, suggesting preferential removal of N-bearing OM also highlighted by losses in total hydrolysable amino acids (HAA). In the Labrador Sea slope records, due to low SR, OM concentration changes linked to long term temporal variations may superimpose on these diagenetic trends, and some influence of the WBUC is noticeable.  相似文献

We investigate the stress–strain behaviour and failure of a cohesive granular material both by experiments and numerical simulations. The material is an assembly of aluminium rods glued together by means of an epoxy resin. The behaviour of cohesive bonds (force–displacement relationship, failure conditions) is characterized by performing simple loading tests (tension/compression, shear…) on a couple of rods. Then, this local behaviour is introduced in a numerical code based on a discrete element method in order to perform numerical compression tests on large samples. The validation of this approach was the main goal of the present investigation that is essentially achieved by a direct comparison between the numerical results and similar experimental tests. As a basic application, we derive the macroscopic cohesion and friction characteristics of random cohesive materials by systematic numerical simulations in a biaxial geometry. Résumé Le complexe filonien du cortège ophiolitique de Guévguéli comporte, à côté de spilites, des roches caractérisées par des teneurs élevées en K2O liées au développement de la séricite aux dépens du plagioclase. La confrontation des observations concernant, d'une part, la répartition de la séricite dans les roches, d'autre part, les processus de la différenciation magmatique, par «effet Bagnold», dans les caisses filoniennes, indique que le phénomène de séricitisation est contrôlé par la composition du plagioclase: ce sont les cristaux les plus basiques, accumulés au niveau du plan axial des filons, qui ont été le plus largement transformés en séricite. La séricitisation influe sur la spilitisation qui lui succède, en fixant l'alumine dans les phases minérales stables à basse température.
The Guevgueli sheeted complex consists of spilites and rocks characterized by high K2O contents, due to the crystallization of sericite at the expense of plagioclase. The comparison of the observations on the distribution of the sericite in the rocks, as well as on the process of magmatic differentiation in the dykes by Bagnold effect shows that the phenomenon of sericitization is controlled by the composition of the plagioclase. The more basic crystals occur accumulated in the axial zone of the dykes, the more are they affected by sericitization. Sericitization has an effect upon spilitization which succeds it: it fixes alumina into stable minerals at low temperature.

Zusammenfassung Der gangförmige Komplex der ophiolitischen Folgen von Guevgueli umfaßt Spilite und Gesteine, die einen hohen K2O-Gehalt aufweisen, der während der Serizitisierung auf Kosten der Plagioklase entstanden ist. Ein Vergleich der Beobachtungen über die Verteilung der Serizite und die Prozesse der magmatischen Differenzierung durch den Bagnold Effekt in den Gängen ergibt, daß das Phänomen der Serizitisierung von der Zusammensetzung der Plagioklase bestimmt wird. Die basischen Feldspate, die in der Axial-Zone der Gänge angereichert sind, erscheinen am stärksten serizitisiert. Die Serizitisierung zeigt einen Effekt auf die folgende Spilitisierung, wonach bei tiefen Temperaturen das Aluminiumoxyd in stabilen Mineralen fixiert wird.

Pollen analysis was carried out on sediments older than the Würm pleniglacial (OIS 4), in two new sequences (H and I) derived from the centre of Lac du Bouchet, Massif Central. The inferred vegetation history enables, for the first time in France, five temperate episodes to be defined which pre-date the last interglacial. These temperate episodes alternate with episodes during which the changes in vegetation are indicative of glacial climates. Comparison of these climatic episodes with the oceanic isotope record shows that the pollen record of sequences H and I from Lac du Bouchet spans the time interval from OIS 9c (Ussel interstadial) to OIS 5e (Ribains/Eemian interglacial). In the organic sediments from the Amargiers interstadial (OIS 9a), a trachytic layer, Ar/Ar dated to ca 275 ka, enables a correlation to be established with the upper part of a sequence derived from the nearby Praclaux crater, the lower part of this sequence being of Holsteinian age (OIS 11c). The cross-dating of the pollen sequences from Lac du Bouchet (cores H, I and D) and from Praclaux provides a complete record from the Massif Central, southern France, of successive glacial and interglacial episodes that span the last ca. 400 ka, that is the interval from the Holsteinian to the Holocene.  相似文献

Deep-sea coral has proved useful for paleoceanographic reconstructions and for documenting 14C-ages of water masses using 230Th-ages. However, for precise and accurate U-series dating, further information on coral-age structure, growth rate and diagenetic evolution is still needed. To document such processes, we used U-Th-226Ra systematics in a 40 cm diameter, Lophelia pertusa specimen collected in 1912 from the Eastern Atlantic (Sea of the Hebrides). External parts of the specimen are thought to have been alive when collected whereas more internal parts were likely dead. The “live-collected” and “dead” parts of the skeleton were sampled and analyzed for their 230Th, 232Th, 234U, 238U, 226Ra and Ba contents by thermal ionization and multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. 230Th/234U ratios in the most recent parts yielded ages of 86 ± 6 a and 92 ± 9 a, in agreement with the date of recovery. The older parts yielded 230Th ages ranging from 169 ± 15 to 211 ± 10 a (n = 5), but had a 31% higher U content than more recent parts of the skeleton. This raises concerns about the possibility of secondary diagenetic U uptake, although an environmentally controlled U/Ca shift between coral growth stages cannot be ruled out. 226Ra/Ba measurements were made, and model- 226Ra/Ba ages averaging 250 ± 12 yr were calculated for the older part, assuming a constant initial 226Ra/Ba ratio in bottom waters. These ages are slightly older than 230Th-ages, suggesting either that 226Ra/Ba ratios of ambient-seawater changed over time or that a diagenetic phenomenon have affected the U-series system, or both. Scanning electron microscope observations revealed bioerosion and secondary biomineralization in the older part of the coral skeleton, supporting the hypothesis that diagenetic processes may have influenced the ages obtained by the U-series toolbox. Modeled U-series ages for such an open system are discussed. However, a comparison between 14C- and 230Th-ages performed on both pristine and bioeroded parts of the coral gives coherent values (ca 450 a) for the preindustrial 14C-reservoir age of North Atlantic waters. It remains to be determined, however, whether diagenesis occurs rapidly over a short period of time, or whether it continues for longer periods. In the latter case, diagenetic processes would hamper paleoceanographic interpretations as well as the precise calculation of 14C ages of deep-water masses, based on comparative U/Th- and 14C-chronologies.  相似文献
