We have dated by the K/Ar method the oldest volcanic formations known in the Azores archipelago. The results show a development of this oceanic island system from 5.5 m.y. to the present day.The age pattern is not compatible with a simple migration over a small fixed hot spot, but, plotting tectonic directions which control the volcanism versus age and distance to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a simple relationship seems to appear showing an anisotropic but fixed distribution of stress orientation at least for the last 0.7 m.y.  相似文献

We present the results of numerical experiments about the influence of steepness on the resonant structure, stability and diffusion in a 4-dimensional symplectic map. The map is designed so that by changing a parameter, we smoothly switch steepness on and off by the change of the so called steepness coefficients. In both cases we measure the diffusion coefficients of the actions within a resonance. According to Nekhoroshev theorem we find that, in the steep case, the diffusion coefficients are definitely smaller than in the non steep one, thus confirming the threshold effect of the steepness coefficients which comes from the proof of Nekhoroshev theorem.  相似文献

We perform an analysis of the dynamics of the circular, restricted, planar three-body problem under the effect of different kinds of dissipation (linear, Stokes and Poynting–Robertson drags). Since the problem is singular, we implement a regularization technique in the style of Levi–Civita. The effect of the dissipation is often to decrease the semi-major axis; as a consequence the minor body collides with one of the primaries. In general, it is quite difficult to find non-collision orbits using random initial conditions. However, by means of the computation of the Fast Lyapunov Indicators (FLI), we obtain a global view of the dynamics. Precisely, we detect the regions of the phase space potentially belonging to basins of attraction. This investigation provides information on the different regions of the phase space, showing both collision and non-collision trajectories. Moreover, we find periodic orbit attractors for the case of linear and Stokes drags, while in the case of the Poynting–Robertson effect no other attractors are found beside the primaries, unless a fourth body is added to counterbalance the dissipative effect.  相似文献

The link between the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and low-frequency changes of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is investigated in three historical and five control simulations with different climate models. An AMOC intensification is followed by a positive AMO phase in each case, but the time lag and the strength of the AMO–AMOC link depend on the model and the type of simulation. In historical simulations, the link is sensitive to the method used to remove the influence of external and anthropogenic forcing from the sea surface temperature (SST) before defining the AMO. Subtracting the regression onto the global mean SST leads to better correlations between the AMO and the AMOC than linear or quadratic detrending, or removing the global mean SST, but a dynamical filter based on linear inverse modeling (LIM) yields even slightly higher correlations. The LIM filter, which decomposes the SST field into non-orthogonal normal modes that may have a physical interpretation, allows investigating whether removing Pacific links from SST improves the AMOC–AMO correlation. In several cases, there is a small improvement when removing the links to the El Niño Southern Oscillation, but the correlation becomes weaker in one historical simulation, so no firm conclusion can be drawn. Additionally removing the modes associated with the Pacific decadal variability strongly degrades the representation of AMOC changes by the AMO in one model, and it tends to reduce the AMOC–AMO correlation in most others, reflecting the strong relation between the Pacific and the Atlantic at decadal scales. The LIM-based filter is finally applied to observed SSTs, confirming that the AMO amplitude is smaller and its recent positive phase weaker than when the global effects are represented by a linear trend. When the global signal is removed, the observed AMO leads the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, but does not significantly lag it, as suggested earlier, stressing the need to carefully remove global changes when investigating low-frequency interbasin connections.  相似文献

Intermediate mass pre-main sequence stars (1.5 to 5 M )cross the instability strip on their way to the main sequence.They are therefore expected to be pulsating in a similar way as the Scuti stars. Agriculture has always been the major source of income of the Republic of Haiti. Only in the late sixties did the Haitian Government decide to move toward industrialization and explotation of natural resources, but no reliable inventory of mineral potential was available. In June 1970 the Resources and Transport Division of the U.N. (now CNRET) undertook a structural analysis of the Caribbean with reference to defining favorable loci for ore disposition. One of the conclusions of this survey was that from the metallogenetic point of view, the Northern part of Haiti was a favorable area for prospecting for habe metal deposits, especially for copper. Those conclusions were acknowleadged with great enthusiams by the Haitian authorities, and they welcomed in July 1971 a UN technical adviser who outlined a first phase of exploration. Following this mission, a “Mineral exploration Project” was created by the Haitian Government with the cooperation of UNDP, and an area of 9000 km2 was selected, based on structural, lithological, and metallogenetic reasons, as an exploration target. The most important aspects of this project were:Mineral Exploration—First Phase (1973–1974). The following operations were carried out by a small team: (a) photo interpretation at 1:50,000 and 1:200,000 scale, (b) geological reconnaissance at 1:50,000 scale, (c) geochemical reconnaissance (stream sediment) at 1:50,000 scale. The photo interpretation helped outline zones of particular structural interest and was followed up by ground control studies. Stream sediment geochemical reconnaissance was carried out over half of the project area, following the indications given by the photo geological interpretation. finally, combining all the data, five areas were selected for detailed follow up survey: (1) Terrier Rouge—Perche, (2) Vallieres, (3) Mont-Organise, (4) Limonade, (5) Gros Morne—Le Borgne.Mineral Exploration—Second Phase (1975–1976). The main zones of interest were reduced to a few hundred km2 and porphyry copper type deposits appeared to be the most promising target. Detailed geological mapping (1:25,000 to 1:2,000) and soil geochemistry were carried out on the above mentioned five areas, the most promising appearing quickly to be Terrier Rouge-Perges, with porphyry-type copper mineralization. A geophysical survey (IP and Mag) confirmed the geochemical results. At the end of the second phase of exploration (December 1976) two of the five prospects of the Terrier Rouge area have been diamond drilled and appeared to be of potential economic interest. Because of the number and importance of the prospects discovered a third phase of exploration was deemed necessary with the purpose of continuing the detailed prospection work and drilling the other prospects. This third phase started in January 1977 and was expected to last until December 1979. The concept of a time-depth correlation between tectonic earthquakes at depth beneath some volcanoes, and their eruptions, developed by the author since 1962, has been confirmed by new observations and successful prediction of renewed volcanic activity in New Zealand.Regular earthquake migrations are observed along the Benioff zone, and volcanic eruptions are found to be related to these seismic migrations beneath the volcanoes, as follows:
Therefore, in island arcs and continental margins, volcanic activity is the result of two processes occurring beneath the volcanoes: (1) a “tectonic process”, a migration of strain release along the downgoing lithosphere, of which the earthquakes are the manifestation; (2) a “magmatic process”, a relatively fast vertical ascent of magmatic material from the deep root of the volcano, where the observed shocks may be the starting signal from this level.The rate of migration of tectonic earthquakes increases with depth in the upper mantle.An empirical time relationship between the earthquakes occurring at depth beneath a volcano and its eruptions, has been successfully tested for renewed activity at White Island in New Zealand, over the period 1977–1978.  相似文献

The activity of Vesuvius between A.D. 79 and 1631 has been investigated by means of precise archaeomagnetic dating of primary volcanic deposits and taking into account the stratigraphy of lavas and tephra, historical written accounts, archaeological evidence related to the developing urbanisation, and radiocarbon ages. We found that the historical records are highly useful in constraining the timing of the main events, even if the data are often too scarce and imprecise for ascertaining the details of all phases of activity, especially their magnitude and emplacement of all the deposit types. In addition, some eruptions that took place in the 9th and 10th centuries appear to be unnoticed by historians. The archaeomagnetic study involved 26 sites of different lavas and 2 pyroclastic deposits. It shows that within the 15 centuries which elapsed between A.D. 79 and 1631, the effusive activity of Vesuvius clustered in the relatively short period of time between A.D. 787 and 1139 and was followed by a 5-century-long repose period. During this time Vesuvius prepared itself for the violent explosive eruption of 1631. The huge lavas shaping the morphology of the coast occurred largely through parasitic vents located outside the Mount Somma caldera. One of these parasitic vents is located at low elevation, very close to the densely inhabited town of Torre Annunziata. Among the various investigated lavas, a number of which were previously attributed to the 1631 eruption, none is actually younger than the 12th century. The laser fluorination technique reported here for analyzing the oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of fine quartz size fractions 50-20, 20-10, 10-5, 5-2, 2-1 and <1 μm has been validated by comparison with the ion microprobe technique. It yields accurate δ18O data with an external precision better than 0.15‰. This is a significant methodological improvement for isotopic studies dealing with materials such as soil or biogenic oxides and silicates: particles are often too small and recovered in insufficient amount to be easily handled for ion microprobe analysis. Both techniques were used to investigate δ18O composition of a Cretaceous quartzite and silcrete sequence from the South-East of France. Quartzite cements average 31.04 ± 1.93‰. They formed from Mid-Cretaceous seawater. Higher in the series, silcretes cements average 26.66 ± 1.36‰. They formed from Upper- or post-Upper-Cretaceous soil water and groundwater. Oxygen isotope data show that the silicification steps from one mineralogical phase to another and from one layer to another (including from an upper pedogenic silcrete to a lower groundwater silcrete) occurred in a closed or weakly evaporating hydrological system.  相似文献

To the south of Les Sables-d'Olonne (Vendée, France), the Early Liassic (Hettangian) sedimentation locally begins with continental clastics (including the dinosaur footprint-bearing beds of Le Veillon) prior to the deposition of shallow marine carbonates. Subsurface data (water borehole and geophysical line) indicate frequent variations in thickness of the clastics, related to fault block pattern. Simultaneously, numerous sedimentary dyke swarms developed within the metamorphic basement. These tectonic features resulted from an Early Liassic NNE–SSW-trending extension of the basement. Mineralized zones (silicification and metal-bearing mineralization) are related to hydrothermal circulations, contemporaneous (at least in part) with the Early Liassic extension.
