Fluctuations in benthic foraminiferal faunas over the last 130,000 yr in four piston cores from the Norwegian Sea are correlated with the standard worldwide oxygen-isotope stratigraphy. One species, Cibicides wuellerstorfi, dominates in the Holocene section of each core, but alternates downcore with Oridorsalis tener, a species dominant today only in the deepest part of the basin. O. tener is the most abundant species throughout the entire basin during periods of particularly cold climate when the Norwegian Sea presumably was ice covered year round and surface productivity lowered. Portions of isotope Stages 6, 3, and 2 are barren of benthic foraminifera; this is probably due to lowered benthic productivity, perhaps combined with dilution by ice-rafted sediment; there is no evidence that the Norwegian Sea became azoic. The Holocene and Substage 5e (the last interglacial) are similar faunally. This similarity, combined with other evidence, supports the presumption that the Norwegian Sea was a source of dense overflows into the North Atlantic during Substage 5e as it is today. Oxygen-isotope analyses of benthic foraminifera indicate that Norwegian Sea bottom waters warmer than they are today from Substage 5d to Stage 2, with the possible exception of Substage 5a. These data show that the glacial Norwegian Sea was not a sink for dense surface water, as it is now, and thus it was not a source of deep-water overflows. The benthic foraminiferal populations of the deep Norwegian Sea seem at least as responsive to near-surface conditions, such as sea-ice cover, as they are to fluctuations in the hydrography of the deep water. Benthic foraminiferal evidence from the Norwegian Sea is insufficient in itself to establish whether or not the basin was a source of overflows into the North Atlantic at any time between the Substage 5e/5d boundary at 115,000 yr B.P. and the Holocene. 相似文献

The first224Ra (t1/2 = 3.64days) measurements from mixing zones of estuarine systems are presented for the Pee Dee River-Winyah Bay and Delaware Bay Estuaries. High-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry was used to determine224Ra,228Ra (t1/2 = 5.7years), and226Ra (t1/2 = 1622years) activity ratios. Desorption and diffusion from suspended and bottom sediments contributes to the non-conservative increases of the three isotopes in each systems. In Delaware Bay224Ra concentrations were nearly constant over the 2.5‰ to 15‰ salinity range where two turbidity maximum zones are located.228Th scavenging onto the suspended particles in the turbid zones may supply a regenerative source of224Ra in this system. Samples collected on the ebb and flood tide from a salt marsh along Delaware Bay have a 5-fold increase in224Ra from flood to ebb and 3- and 2-fold increases for228Ra and226Ra respectively, indicating salt marshes are another source of radium to estuarine waters. 相似文献

Catches of perch have strongly decreased in Lake of Geneva from 1975 to 1981. This decrease was attributed to the impact of
overfishing, enhanced by the accelerated growth of perch. Therefore, too many perches were captured before their first reproduction
and the stocks of reproducers were strongly reduced. Furthermore, adverse meteorological conditions occurred probably during
several periods of reproduction. The accelerated growth of perch was attributed to the combined effects of increasing eutrophication
(more food available) and of overfishing (decreased perch density in the shoals).

The relationships between the diversity of invertebrate communities and the altitude of sampling sites were analysed in 438 benthic samples, collected between 1982 and 1991, in 56 rivers of western Switzerland. Diversity, estimated from total number of taxa (genus or family) and from number of taxa intolerant of pollution, was positively correlated with increasing altitude. In contrast, density of human population and the level of organic pollution were negatively correlated with increasing altitude. Therefore, the upstream increase of invertebrate diversity was attributed to the decrease of human population which is the main source of organic pollution. In this study, altitude was used, instead of organic pollution, to predict diversity. Empirical relationships between diversity and altitude were applied to surveys of water quality to describe the general altitudinal pattern characteristic for each region and to single out anomalous sites and rivers. In addition, changes in the altitudinal patterns of diversity can be used to monitor the recovery of rivers from pollution. 相似文献

It is already known (Froeschlé, Lega and Gonczi, 1997) that the Fast Lyapunov Indicator (FLI), that is the computation on a relatively short time of the largest Lyapunov indicator, allows to discriminate between ordered and weak chaotic motion. We have found that, under certain conditions, the FLI also discriminates between resonant and non-resonant orbits, not only for two-dimensional symplectic mappings but also for higher dimensional ones. Using this indicator, we present an example of the Arnold web detection for four and six-dimensional symplectic maps. We show that this method allows to detect the global transition of the system from an exponentially stable Nekhoroshevs like regime to the diffusive Chirikovs one. 相似文献

This paper measures the influence of climate normals (average long-term surface wetness and temperature) and interannual climate
variance on farms in the United States and Brazil using satellite data. The paper finds that just climate normals or just
climate variance variables can explain both net revenues and how much land is used for cropland. However, because they are
correlated with each other, it is important to include both normals and variance in the same statistical model to get accurate
measures of their individual contribution to farm outcomes. In general, higher climate variance increases the probability
that land is used for cropland in both countries and higher temperatures reduce both cropland and land values. Other annual

Using the standard map as a model problem and in the spirit of cluster analysis we have studied the invariance of the distributions of different indicators introduced to detect and measure weak chaos. We show that the problem is less straightforward than expected and that, except for very strong chaotic dynamical systems, all the complexities (islands, sticking phenomena, cantori) of mixed Hamiltonian systems are reflected into the indicators of convergence towards invariant distributions. 相似文献

One petrogenetic grid for plagioclase-, spinel- and garnet-lherzolite analogues in the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 is presented from 1 bar to 30 kbar and 400 to 1500°C. Another grid for olivine-gabbro, spinel-gabbro and garnet-pyroxenite analogues in the same system is presented from 1 bar to 25 kbar and 500 to 1500°C. Both grids show the distribution of the mineral assemblages and the variations in the composition of clinopyroxene with temperature and pressure. They were developed by applying simple thermodynamic mixing models of clinopyroxene to experimentally determined clino-pyroxene compositions.Calcium tschermak's pyroxene (CaAl2SiO6) in complex CaMgSi2O6-CaAl2SiO6-Mg2Si2O6 clinopyroxenes is best represented by a local charge balance mixing model where Enthalpy and entropy changes of subsolidus reactions involving variations in the CaAl2SiO6 and Mg2Si2O6 content of clinopyroxene are interdependent due to nonideal mixing of these two end-members. CaAl2SiO6 can strongly reduce the mutual solubility of clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene at moderate pressures and high temperatures. Failure to take this into account can result in temperature underestimates (up to 150°C) of spinel-lherzolites, garnet-pyroxenites, low pressure garnet-lherzolites, spinel-gabbros, and high pressure plagioclase-lherzolites and olivine-gabbros. However, at temperatures and pressures where the Al2O3 content of clinopyroxene is low (e.g. garnet-lherzolite nodules in kimberlite), the mutual solubility is adequantely represented by experimental results in the system CaO-MgO-SiO2. 相似文献
