A procedure to calculate horizontal slow drift excitation forces on an infinitely long horizontal cylinder in irregular beam sea waves is presented. The hydrodynamic boundary-value problem is solved correctly to second order in wave amplitude. Results in the form of second order transfer functions are presented for different two-dimensional shapes. It is concluded that Newman's approximative method is a practical way to calculate slow drift excitation forces on a ship in beam sea and suggested that it may be used in a more general case. Applications of the results for moored ships are discussed.  相似文献

Environmental chemicals may modulate the endocrine system through interaction with plasma sex steroid-binding proteins (SBP) and SBP-regulated processes. Some of these chemicals, which are known to interact with the estrogen receptor (ER), were found to bind competitively to the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) SBP and potentially disrupt the endocrine function of these proteins. Furthermore, both weakly acting (di-n-butyl phthalate) and potent estrogen mimics (ethynylestradiol), were able to induce a substantial up-regulation of circulating levels of SBP in vivo. Interestingly, modulation of SBP-levels was found to be a more sensitive endpoint than chemically induced interference with classical ER-mediated mechanisms for weakly acting estrogen mimics like di-(n-butyl) phthalate. Interference with the endocrine function of SBPs may thus introduce a novel mechanism for endocrine disruption. and give additional answers to the question why some weakly acting xenoestrogens are causing "estrogen-like" reproductive disturbances in developing males.  相似文献

The spectral reflectance from 0.38 to 0.75 μm of a column of liquid sulfur has been measured at several temperatures between the melting point (~118°C) and 173°C. Below 160°C the spectral reflectance was observed to vary reversibly as a function of temperature, independent of the previous thermal history of the column. Once the temperature exceeded 160°C, the spectrum would not change given a subsequent decrease in temperature. The spectral reflectance of the liquid-sulfur column at all temperatures was very low (10–19%). Combining this information with Voyager spectrophotometry of Jupiter's satellite Io, it is concluded that liquid sulfur at any temperature on Io's surface would be classified as a “black area” according to the standards used by the Voyager imaging team in their spectrophotometric analysis (L. Soderblom, T. V. Johnson, D. Morrison, E. Danielson, B. L. Smith, J. Veverka, A. Cook, C. Sagan, P. Kupferman, D. Pieri, J. Mosher, C. Avis, J. Gradie, and T. Clancy (1980). Geophys. Res. Infrared spectra obtained from the Mariner 9 spacecraft during the 1971–1972 dust storm are used to derive information on the composition and particle size distribution of the dust and to study the time evolution of the storm. The dust is not composed of pure granite, basalt, basaltic glass, obsidian, quartz, andesite, or montmorillonite. The infrared spectra suggest that the dust is a mixture of materials, dominated by igneous silicates with >62;60% SiO2, or weathering products such as clay minerals, but the dust could possibly have a significant component of lower SiO2 materials such as basalt. Substantial quantities of carbonates, nitrates, or carbon suboxide are excluded from the mixture. All infrared, visible, and ultraviolet data on the Martian surface composition seem consistent with a mixture of basalt and clay minerals or high SiO2 igneous rocks, with a surface patina of oxides of iron. For all candidate compositions, the data are best matched with a size distribution that approximates a differential power law function of slope ?4. This size distribution is quite similar to terrestial size distributions in regions remote from sources of dust. The relative abundance of particles between 1- and 10-μm radius did not change during the Mariner 9 mission; thus suspended particles did not experience Stokes-Cunningham fallout but instead were supported by turbulence with an eddy diffusion coefficient, Ke ? 7 × 106cm2sec?1. The aerosol optical depth, standardized to 0.3-μm wavelength, varied from about 1.5 early in the mission to about 0.2 at Orbit 200.  相似文献

Measurements of the temperature dependence between 77 and 333°K of the infrared spectrum of cyclic octatomic sulfur suggest that the 23 μm Jovian feature very tentatively identified by Houck et al. [Science 189, 720–722 (1975)] is not due to S8; and that the temperature dependence of the frequency of the 835 cm? band of S8 may be a useful temperature marker in planetary studies.  相似文献

Results of a survey of experimental data on trace element partitioning between crystals and coexisting liquid and between crystals and coexisting aqueous fluid are reported. These studies involve combinations of elements such as Cs, Rb, K, Na, Li, Ba, Sr, Ni and Sm dissolved in minerals such as feldspars, micas, feldspathoids, garnets, pyroxenes, amphibole and olivine. It is shown that the concentration ranges of these elements in minerals with solution behavior according to Henry's law appear to extend to less than 1 wt.% and often to less than 100 ppm of the element in the crystalline phase.The available data indicate that the concentration ranges of solution in minerals according to Henry's law can be positively correlated with the difference of ionic radii between trace element and the host element for which the tracer is assumed to substitute. Furthermore, studies involving crystals and coexisting aqueous fluid have been used to determine whether Henry's law or Raoult's law adequately describes the solution. Based on the assumption that the aqueous fluid solution can be considered ideal, models have been proposed stating that if the difference between the ionic radii of the tracer and the host element in the crystalline phase is less than about 10% (relative to the host element), the solution is ideal (Raoult's law). With larger differences between the ionic radii, there is an excess free energy of mixing, although Henry's law is still obeyed in the concentration ranges where crystalliquid or crystal-fluid partition coefficients are independent of element concentration.  相似文献

R. O. Kuzmin has proposed that all crater-associated wind streaks on Mars are depositional and consist of unresolved barchan-like dunes. He claims that any streak can appear either bright or dark relative to its surroundings depending on the azimuth of the Sun relative to the streak axis and on the elevation of the Sun above the horizon. Our studies of the entire Mariner 9 picture collection as well as of available Viking data lend no support to these ideas. We find that the conditions for visibility of bright and dark streaks are identical. In Mariner 9 images both types of streaks are visible for viewing angles ? ? 60°, illumination angles of 15° ? i ? 75°, and over the whole range of phase angles covered (about 15 to 85°). There are numerous examples of dark and light streaks visible at the same azimuth angle of the Sun, contrary to Kuzmin's claim. There is much evidence to indicate that bright and dark streaks differ both in morphology and in character. The common ragged dark streaks are probably erosion scars, while most bright streaks probably represent accumulations of bright dust-storm fallout. There is no evidence at present that these accumulations have a barchan-like texture.  相似文献

Summary New Latitude Lumped Coefficients (LLC) of a geopotential model are defined as representing the principal differences of the radial distance to a satellite due to the model at single-orbit crossovers in an Exact Repeat Mission. In contrast with previously defined orbital lumped coefficients, the LLC here are dependent only on the geopotential order (without degree distinction) and the latitude. We examine discrepancies in altimetrically determined sea surface heights at over 30000 crossover positions of GEOSAT during its ERM, 1986–1989, after removal of many variable media and surface effects (Cheney et al., 1991) as well as initial condition orbit error. The mean of these discrepancies along well represented latitude bands in the southern hemisphere are used to determine the LLC errors for Goddard Earth Model T2, which was the reference for the GEOSAT sea surface heights. GEM T2 was derived from satelliteonly tracking data with good representation of the GEOSAT orbit. Relating the measured LLC discrepancies to projections of commission error from the GEM T2 variance-covariance matrix, we find that — except for order 3 — GEM T2's performance is as expected. This test represents the first spectral calibration of a gravity model with independent, purely radial orbit data.  相似文献
