GPS-derived deformation rates in northwestern Himalaya and Ladakh   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Deformation rates derived from GPS measurements made at two continuously operating stations at Leh (34.1°N, 77.6°E) and Hanle (32.7°N, 78.9°E), and eight campaign sites in the trans-Himalayan Ladakh spanning 11 years (1997–2008), provide a clear picture of the kinematics of this region as well as the convergence rate across northwestern Himalaya. All the Ladakh sites move 32–34 mm/year NE in the ITRF2005 reference frame, and their relative velocities are 13–16 mm/year SW in the Indian reference frame and ~19 mm/year W with reference to the Lhasa IGS station in southeastern Tibet. The results indicate that there is no statistically significant deformation in the 200-km stretch between the continuous sites Leh and Hanle as well as between Leh and Nubra valley sites along the Karakoram fault, whereas the sites in and around the splayed Karakoram fault region indicate surface deformation of 2.5 mm/year. Campaign sites along the Karakoram fault zone indicate a fault parallel surface motion of 1.4–2.5 mm/year in the Tangste and western Panamik segment of the Karakoram fault, which quantifies the best possible GPS-derived dextral slip rate of 3 mm/year along this fault during this 11-year period. Baselines of Ladakh sites show convergence rates of 15–18 mm/year with respect to south India and 12–15 mm/year with respect to Delhi in north India and Almora in the Himalaya ~400 km north-northeast of Delhi. These constitute an arc normal convergence of 12–15 mm/year across the western Himalaya, which is consistent with arc normal convergence all along the Himalayan arc from west to east. Baseline extension rates of 14–16 mm/year between Lhasa and Ladakh sites are consistent with the east–west extension rate of Tibetan Plateau.  相似文献

A recently developed near infrared high speed photometer intended for lunar oc-cultation studies is described. The primary scientific objective is to reach milli arc second levels of angular resolution so that circumstellar structure of the occulted sources can be resolved. Near infrared sky brightness close to the lunar limb is also studied. Angular diameter derived from the observed occultation of IRC +20169 is presented and system performance discussed.  相似文献

An analysis of the proper motion measurements of the young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with the cometary globules (CGs) in the Gum Nebula is presented. While earlier studies based on the radial-velocity measurements of the CGs suggested expansion of the system of the CGs, the observed proper motion of the YSOs shows no evidence for expansion. In particular, the kinematics of two YSOs embedded in CGs are inconsistent with the supernova explosion of the companion of ζ Pup, about 1.5 Myr ago being the cause of the expansion of the system of the CGs. YSOs associated with the CGs share the average proper motion of the member stars of the Vela OB2 association. A few YSOs that have relatively large proper motions are found to show relatively low infrared excesses.  相似文献

In the inner regions of an accretion disc around a black hole, relativistic protons can interact with ambient matter to produce electrons, positrons and γ-rays. The resultant steady-state electron and positron particle distributions are self-consistently computed taking into account Coulomb and Compton cooling,  e e+  pair production (due to γ–γ annihilation) and pair annihilation. While earlier works used the diffusion approximation to obtain the particle distributions, here we solve a more general integro-differential equation that correctly takes into account the large change in particle energy that occurs when the leptons Compton scatter off hard X-rays. Thus this formalism can also be applied to the hard state of black hole systems, where the dominant ambient photons are hard X-rays. The corresponding photon energy spectrum is calculated and compared with broad-band data of black hole binaries in different spectral states. The results indicate that the γ-ray spectra  ( E > 0.8 MeV)  of both the soft and hard spectral states and the entire hard X-ray/γ-ray spectrum of the ultrasoft state could be due to p–p interactions. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that there always exists in these systems a γ-ray spectral component due to p–p interactions that can contribute between 0.5 and 10 per cent of the total bolometric luminosity. The model predicts that GLAST would be able to detect black hole binaries and provide evidence for the presence of non-thermal protons, which in turn would give insight into the energy dissipation process and jet formation in these systems.  相似文献

Water quality in less-developed countries is often subject to substantial degradation, but is rarely studied in a systematic way. The concentration and flux of major ions, carbon, nitrogen, silicon, and trace metals in the heavily urbanized Bagmati River within Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, are reported. The concentrations of all chemical species increased with distance downstream with the exceptions of protons and nitrate, and showed strong relationships with population density adjacent to the river. Total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), dominated by NH4, was found in high concentrations along the Bagmati drainage system. The export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and TDN were 23 and 33 tons km?2 year?1, respectively, at the outlet point of the Kathmandu Valley, much higher than in relatively undeveloped watersheds. The cationic and silica fluxes were 106 and 18 tons km?2 year?1 at the outlet of the Bagmati within Kathmandu Valley, and 36 and 32 tons km?2 year?1 from the relatively pristine headwater area. The difference between headwaters and the urban site suggests that the apparent weathering flux is three times higher than the actual weathering rate in the heavily urbanized Bagmati basin. Fluxes of cations and silica are above the world average, as well as fluxes from densely populated North American and European watersheds. End-member composition of anthropogenic sources like sewage or agricultural runoff is needed to understand the drivers of this high rate of apparent weathering.  相似文献

As part of a program to search for the near infrared counterparts to the far infrared sources discovered by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) we have scanned two areas including the IRAS error boxes for the sources IRAS 0453+444 and IRAS 1717-087 at 2.2 m down to the flux density limit of 1 Jy. Results on the IRAS sources and the detection of two new bright near infrared sources are reported and discussed.  相似文献

This study reviews the Quaternary alluvial stratigraphy in three semi-arid river basins of western India i.e., lower Luni (Rajasthan), and Mahi and Sabarmati (Gujarat alluvial plains). On the basis of OSL chronologies, it is shown that the existing intra-valley lithostratigraphic correlations require a revision. The sand, gravel and mud facies are present during various times in the three basins, however, the fluvial response to climate change, and the resulting facies associations, was different in the Thar desert as compared to that at the desert margin; this makes purely lithostratigraphic correlations unviable. It is further shown that the rivers in the Thar desert were more sensitive to climate change and had small response times and geomorphic thresholds as compared to the desert-margin rivers. This is illustrated during the early OIS 1, when the Luni river in the Thar desert was dynamic and showed frequent variations in fluvial styles such as gravel bedload braided streams, sand-bed ephemeral streams and meandering streams, all followed by incision during the early Holocene. The coeval deposits in Sabarmati, however, only show a meandering, floodplain-dominated river. Late Quaternary alluvial deposits in these basins unconformably overlie some older deposits that lack any absolute chronology. Based on the facies types and their associations, and the composition and architecture of the multistoried gravel sheets in the studied sections, it is suggested that older deposits are of pre-Quaternary age. We report here results from detailed timing and spectral studies of the high mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1538-52 over several binary periods using observations made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and BeppoSAX satellites. Pulse timing analysis with the 2003 RXTE data over two binary orbits confirms an eccentric orbit of the system. Combining the orbitial parameters determined from this observation with the earlier measurements we did not find any evidence of orbital decay in this X-ray binary. We have carried out orbital phase resolved spectroscopy to measure changes in the spectral parameters with orbital phase, particularly the absorption column density and the iron line flux. The RXTE-PCA spectra in the 3–20 keV energy range were fitted ∼6.4 keV, whereas the BeppoSAX spectra needed only a power law and Gaussian emission line at ∼6.4 keV in the restricted energy range of 0.3–10.0 keV. An absorption along the line of sight was included for both the RXTE and BeppoSAX data. The variation of the free spectral parameters over the binary orbit was investigated and we found that the variation of the column density of absorbing material in the line of sight with orbital phase is in reasonable agreement with a simple model of a spherically symmetric stellar wind from the companion star.  相似文献

Neural computing has moved beyond simple demonstration to more significant applications. Encouraged by recent developments in artificial neural network (ANN) modelling techniques, we have developed committee machine (CM) networks for converting well logs to porosity and permeability, and have applied the networks to real well data from the North Sea. Simple three‐layer back‐propagation ANNs constitute the blocks of a modular system where the porosity ANN uses sonic, density and resistivity logs for input. The permeability ANN is slightly more complex, with four inputs (density, gamma ray, neutron porosity and sonic). The optimum size of the hidden layer, the number of training data required, and alternative training techniques have been investigated using synthetic logs. For both networks an optimal number of neurons in the hidden layer is in the range 8–10. With a lower number of hidden units the network fails to represent the problem, and for higher complexity overfitting becomes a problem when data are noisy. A sufficient number of training samples for the porosity ANN is around 150, while the permeability ANN requires twice as many in order to keep network errors well below the errors in core data. For the porosity ANN the overtraining strategy is the suitable technique for bias reduction and an unconstrained optimal linear combination (OLC) is the best method of combining the CM output. For permeability, on the other hand, the combination of overtraining and OLC does not work. Error reduction by validation, simple averaging combined with range‐splitting provides the required accuracy. The accuracy of the resulting CM is restricted only by the accuracy of the real data. The ANN approach is shown to be superior to multiple linear regression techniques even with minor non‐linearity in the background model.  相似文献
