The foraminiferal fauna and lithology of 17 short sediment cores from two profiles in the Norwegian Channel have been investigated. Three ecostratigraphical zones are distinguished and their depositional environment, age and correlation with adjacent areas are discussed. The zones form a climatically conditioned succession (from below): the Cassidulina-Nonion zone contains an arctic fauna affected by meltwater influx, and its deposition was in progress in Late Weichselian; the Uvigerina-Cassidulina zone with a mixed fauna of arctic and boreal species is referred to the Early Flandrian; the Uvigerina-Bulimina zone contains a boreal fauna and was deposited under influence of Atlantic water; its age is regarded as Middle and Late Flandrian. Transport and deposition of sediments in the channel is discussed on the basis of recent current conditions and distribution of the zones.  相似文献

The evolution of two adjacent bipolar sunspot groups is studied using Debrecen full-disc, white-light photoheliograms and H filtergrams as well as Meudon magnetograms. The proper motions of the principal preceding spots of both groups show quite similar patterns; the spots move along almost parallel tracks and change the direction of their motion on the same day at almost the same heliographic longitude. Also, three simultaneous emergences of magnetic flux were observed in both groups. These observations support the idea that these adjacent sunspot groups were magnetically linked below the photosphere. Matching the extrapolated magnetic field lines with the chromospheric fibril structure appears to be different in the two groups since they indicate quite different model solutions for each group, i.e., a near-potential magnetic field configuration in the older group (1) and a twisted force-free field configuration in the younger group (2). The latter configuration could be created by a considerable twist of the main bunch of flux tubes in Group 2, which is reflected in the relative sunspot motions. It is also showed how this twist contributed to the formation of a filament between the two groups.  相似文献

Micropaleontological observations and organic geochemical analyses imply, but certainly do not prove, that life may not have been present ~3,800 Ma ago in Southwestern Greenland; however, physiologically complex prokaryotes flourished by the Early Proterozoic in other locations. It is, of course, also possible that life may have appeared earlier in locations other than Greenland. Investigations of Precambrian biological and biochemical evolutionary trends require interdisciplinary efforts, up-to-date instrumentation and methodology (such as ultramicrochemical analyses of individual microfossils/microstructures), and caution in the interpretation of experimental results.  相似文献

The magnetic anomaly map of North America serves as a useful base from which to attempt palinspastic reconstruction of terranes accreted during the Elzevirian orogeny (1250–1200 Ma); the Shawinigan (1200–1150 Ma), Ottawan (1080–1020 Ma), and Rigolet (1020–1000 Ma) phases of the Grenvillian orogeny; and post-Grenvillian magmatism (760–600 Ma) and deformation prior to Iapetan rifting at 565 Ma. Accreted terranes had unique histories prior to amalgamation and share common tectonic events afterwards. Comparisons with magnetic signatures of the Paleozoic craton–craton suture, sutures of accreted terranes, and the Jurassic rifted-margin for the southern-central Appalachians provide a basis for discriminating among alternative Grenvillian sutures beneath the Appalachian orogen.The Elzevirian suture is partially preserved beneath the Appalachians where it separates the Reading Prong terrane from Laurentia (i.e., Adirondacks and composite-arc terrane and Canadian Grenville Province). The Shawinigan suture is partially preserved in the Llano area (Texas), but separated the now-fragmented and allochthonous Amazonian (as indicated from Pb-isotope data) blocks of the outboard Blue Ridge terrane from the Reading Prong terrane in the Appalachians. Isolated blocks of the Sauratown Mountains terrane are interpreted as outboard of the Blue Ridge terrane, but were also accreted during the Shawinigan phase. Within present-day Laurentia, the only fragment of a terrane believed to have been accreted during the main Ottawan phase is the Mars Hill terrane (North Carolina–Tennessee). This suggests that the outboard Ottawan suture may have served as the locus of Iapetan rifting along much of Laurentia. The Rigolet phase (1020–1000 Ma) is characterized by widespread “Basin and Range” type extension (NW–SE) associated with sinistral or dextral movement on the NY-AL lineament, mobilization of core-complexes (Adirondack Highlands), and AMCG magmatism along the outboard flank of the extensional region. Following the Rigolet phase, the Appalachian region continued to be characterized by NW–SE extension during the passage of a possible hotspot along a NE-track (760–600 Ma) across the Blue Ridge and other terranes, and during initial Iapetan rifting (565 Ma). The palinspastic rifted-margin of Laurentia crosses many of these terranes and sutures as well as the possible region of Rigolet extension and the possible hotspot track, thus providing many potential piercing points within the Grenville orogen for comparison with Paleozoic terranes like the Precordillera in South America.  相似文献

Analysis of benthic foraminiferal assemblages was performed in Bathonian to Kimmeridgian deposits through a section covering the lower half of the Agardhfjellet Formation in central Spitsbergen. The section consists mainly of organic-rich shales, which contain low-diversity agglutinated assemblages. In this foraminiferal succession five morphogroups were differentiated according to shell architecture (general shape, mode of coiling and number of chambers), integrated with the supposed microhabitat (epifaunal, shallow infaunal and deep infaunal) and feeding strategy (suspension-feeder, herbivore, bacterivore, etc.). The environmental evolution of the analysed section is interpreted by using the stratigraphic distribution of morphogroups, combined with species diversities and sedimentary data, in a sequence stratigraphic framework. The section comprises two depositional sequences, which demonstrate that species diversity and relative frequency of morphogroups are correlative with transgressive–regressive trends controlling depth and oxygenation of the water column. In both sequences, the maximum flooding interval is characterized by increased organic carbon content, dominance of the epifaunal morphogroups and reduced species diversity: features reflecting the increased degree of stagnation separating the transgressive phase from the regressive phase.  相似文献

We present initial results from the first community-wide effort to compare global plasma interaction model results for Mars. Seven modeling groups participated in this activity, using MHD, multi-fluid, and hybrid assumptions in their simulations. Moderate solar wind and solar EUV conditions were chosen, and the conditions were implemented in the models and run to steady state. Model output was compared in three ways to determine how pressure was partitioned and conserved in each model, the location and asymmetry of plasma boundaries and pathways for planetary ion escape, and the total escape flux of planetary oxygen ions. The two participating MHD models provided similar results, while the five sets of multi-fluid and hybrid results were different in many ways. All hybrid results, however, showed two main channels for oxygen ion escape (a pickup ion ‘plume’ in the hemisphere toward which the solar wind convection electric field is directed, and a channel in the opposite hemisphere of the central magnetotail), while the MHD models showed one (a roughly symmetric channel in the central magnetotail). Most models showed a transition from an upstream region dominated by plasma dynamic pressure to a magnetosheath region dominated by thermal pressure to a low altitude region dominated by magnetic pressure. However, calculated escape rates for a single ion species varied by roughly an order of magnitude for similar input conditions, suggesting that the uncertainties in both the current and integrated escape over martian history as determined by models are large. These uncertainties are in addition to those associated with the evolution of the Sun, the martian dynamo, and the early atmosphere, highlighting the challenges we face in constructing Mars’ past using models.  相似文献

Although the long-term effects and the fate of petroleum hydrocarbons in marine and freshwater environments are not fully understood, it is generally recognized that much of the oil released by accidental spills or by various land sources ends up in the sediment where it may remain for at least several years The present study was undertaken to collect some initial data on the hydrocarbon concentrations in surficial sediments of lakes St Clair, Erie, and Ontario The distribution of hydrocarbons in these lakes followed the general patterns found for a number of contaminants, in that the distribution tended to coincide with the outlines of the sedimentary basins The highest concentrations were found in the Western Basin of Lake Erie and in the inshore zone around the west end of the lake, suggesting major inputs from the Detroit River Apart from some spots of high concentration around known dumping grounds, the concentrations gradually diminish toward the east The distribution pattern in Lake Ontario may be more readily ascribed to water circulation patterns than to any specific source around the lake The hydrocarbon levels were found to be significantly lower than those in Lake Erie in Lake St Clair only trace quantities of hydrocarbons were found, suggesting either low inputs or low sedimentation/accumulation rates due to its shallowness Although the present survey was limited to the top 3 cm of the sediments, the resulting distribution patterns indicate the western end of Lake Erie as the area with the heaviest hydrocarbon loadings The results may also facilitate the selection of specific areas where core sampling coupled with more complete analysis of the extracts could yield significant information on the long-term accumulation of anthropogenic hydrocarbons, and on their persistence and transformations in Great Lakes sediments  相似文献

The west channel of the ancient Deák Ferenc which was constructed in 1875 in Hungary was used for controlling the water amount and the east channel was used for the shipping. In the study, four geophysical nondestructive methods were used to this old channel which needs the restoration and reinforcement works. The high-frequency seismic and acoustic measurements were carried out, the resistivity measurements were carried out to map the resistivity distribution of the slab, the seismic direct wave method was used to map the seismic velocities for understanding the stability conditions of the walls and the ground penetrating radar measurements were carried out on the slab and on the walls. The results of integrated study showed us that voids, faults and cracks were detected and the inhomogeneous construction materials were used in the slab. The obtained results emerged that the usage of nondestructive geophysical methods is essential in all stages of restoration and reinforcement works, especially for the ancient structures.  相似文献
