Studies on saprolitized charnockites associated with a landslip observed in the Blue Mountains in close proximity of the Porthimund Dam (11°22'E 76°34′30″N), Nilgiris District, Tamilnadu State, South India, are reported.Laboratory investigations of the geotechnical properties were carried out to evaluate the nature and degree of weathering quantitatively for estimating the soundness of the charnockites constituting the slip zone. The results of per cent decomposed product of the crest, scarp and toe portions of the slip denote positive correlations with porosity and compressibility; and negative correlations against density, wave velocity, Young's modulus, compressive strength and tensile strength. It is also seen that in the absence of the information on decomposed product, weatherability could still be evaluated considering the per cent change of any physical parameter.Such studies should prove valuable in the mapping of weatherability zones and the assessment and determination of foundation conditions.  相似文献

Coal pebbles found in 1994 in the Greham Bell Island (Franz Josef Land Archipelago) are made up of the Barzas-type cuticular liptobiolith. The coal belongs to the initial stage of catagenesis and is characterized by high content of cutinite (up to 70%) with very low reflectance (Ro= 0.1%). Maceration products show some tegillate elements of Arthropodaand individual Devonian spores. It is supposed that plant cuticle and Arthropoda exocuticle are present in this coal. The obtained data suggest the presence of Paleozoic rocks in the sedimentary sequence, although they are not yet recovered. These data complement the available information on the distribution of specific Devonian coals and allow us to have a new insight into the zoogenic material involved in the coal formation.  相似文献

The gold-bearing deposits of southeastern East Sayan have been categorized according to mineral composition. The most important classification criterion is the composition of productive ore mineral assemblages specific to each of the distinguished types, whereas the use of other criteria results in the inevitable overlap of different structural, compositional, or genetic features of deposits. Eight mineral types of deposits have been determined, which characterize the main gold-bearing mineral ore parageneses: gold-polysulfide, gold-quartz, gold-telluride, gold-tetradymite, gold-antimony, gold-bismuth-sulfosalt, gold-pyrrhotite, and gold-fahlore. The regional metallogenic units are structural-metallogenic zones somewhat differing by the nature of mineralization. Thus, in the Bokson-Gargan metallogenic zone, the gold-quartz, gold-polysulfide, and gold-pyrrhotite types of deposits prevail, while in the western part of the zone, the gold-telluride and gold-bismuth-sulfosalt types are widespread. In the Ilchir zone, gold-fahlore deposits are developed, while in the Khamsarinskaya zone, gold-tetradymite and gold-stibnite. It has been established that the mineral types of deposits depend on the composition of the host rock complexes: gold-quartz, gold-polysulfide, and gold-pyrrhotite types form in association with ophiolites and Archean basement rocks. At granitoid-massif-related deposits, base-metal minerals assume the leading role: Bi sulfosalts, stibnite, tetradymite, and tellurides. The gold-fahlore type forms in carbonate sequences. The proposed classification makes it possible to group all of the known gold-bearing deposits of southeastern East Sayan; it can also be applied to adjacent regions.

Clay minerals in basalt sills from the northern East Pacific Rise, covered by Upper Pleistocene clayey–sandy–silty sediments (turbidites, hemipelagites, and diatom oozes) sampled from DSDP Holes 477, 478, and 481A, were studied by X-ray methods based on the modeling of diffraction patterns. Trioctahedral smectites formed in thin (0.1–0.5 and 1.8–4 m) fissured sills that are well permeable for water delivered from the water-saturated host sediments heated by the sills. Smectites in basalts are found in the interstices (20–40 vol % in the rock and up to 50–80 vol % in hyalobasalts). They replace olivine and fill cracks and vesicles. Plagioclase and clinopyroxene are generally unaltered. The structure of smectites is characterized by different height of layers depending on the composition of cations in the interlayers and the degree of their hydration. The different-height layers either make up individual smectite phases or alternate in different proportions and with a high degree of segregation in the mixed-layer structures. Under conditions of a prolonged cooling, thick (43 m) sills are distinguished from the thin varieties by the formation of trioctahedral minerals (smectite–chlorite, chlorite, defective chlorite, and talc). They are found mainly in the interstices that make up 3–7 vol % of the rock.  相似文献
