A new optical speckle interferometer for use at the 2.34 meter Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT), at Vainu Bappu Observatory (VBO), Kavalur, India, has been designed and developed. Provisions have been made for observation both at the prime focus (f/3,25), as well as at the Cassegrain focus (f/13) of the said telescope. The technical details of this sensitive instrument and the design features are described. An interface between the telescope and the afore-mentioned interferometer is made based on a concept of eliminating the formation of eddies due to the hot air entrapment. The performances of this instrument has been tested both at the laboratory, as well as at the Cassegrain end of the telescope. It is being used routinely to observe the speckle-grams of close-binary (separation < 1 arc second) stars. The size of the Fried's parameter, ro, is also measured. 相似文献

Coastal ecosystems lie at the forefront of sea level rise. We posit that before the onset of actual inundation, sea level rise will influence the species composition of coastal hardwood hammocks and buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus L.) forests of the Everglades National Park based on tolerance to drought and salinity. Precipitation is the major water source in coastal hammocks and is stored in the soil vadose zone, but vadose water will diminish with the rising water table as a consequence of sea level rise, thereby subjecting plants to salt water stress. A model is used to demonstrate that the constraining effect of salinity on transpiration limits the distribution of freshwater-dependent communities. Field data collected in hardwood hammocks and coastal buttonwood forests over 11 years show that halophytes have replaced glycophytes. We establish that sea level rise threatens 21 rare coastal species in Everglades National Park and estimate the relative risk to each species using basic life history and population traits. We review salinity conditions in the estuarine region over 1999?C2009 and associate wide variability in the extent of the annual seawater intrusion to variation in freshwater inflows and precipitation. We also examine species composition in coastal and inland hammocks in connection with distance from the coast, depth to water table, and groundwater salinity. Though this study focuses on coastal forests and rare species of South Florida, it has implications for coastal forests threatened by saltwater intrusion across the globe. 相似文献

Certain associated fluctuations in geomagnetic records and infrasonic pressure variations at ground level noted at Hyderabad and Delhi are discussed with the help of simultaneous records taken during 1980. Typical infrasound signals are noted, apparently generated by the magnetic substorms in the auroral zones and travelling down to near tropical latitudes with speeds in the range of 400–500m s-1 . A Total Solar Eclipse (TSE) was observed from Diamond Harbour (lat. 22.2°N, long 88.2°E) on 24 October 1995. The variation of -ray intensity was measured in the energy range of 0.3–3.0 MeV for different time spans throughout the period of the eclipse. A CR-39 detector was used to look at the change in the fluxes of neutral and charged particles. The maximum drop ( 25%) in the intensity of -ray was observed in the range 2.5–3 MeV during TSE. The CR-39 results showed the appearance of a good number of tracks and a small variation of proton and neutron flux of 10% which was not significant statistically. Low energy -ray fluxes at sea level originate from the secondary electron-photon components of cosmic rays in the atmosphere; its modulation by TSE is interpreted as follows. The cooling of the atmosphere in the path of the umbra induces a reduction of the height of the main production layer of the nuclear component, as a result of which, fewer µ± mesons (from the decay of the± mesons) decay to e±. This leads to a small reduction in the flux of electron-photon component at sea level which originates from this branch; the main branch of e - component from 0 decay remains nearly unaffected. As the total mass of air remains the same, little or no change in the slow proton or the neutron flux at sea level is expected. These are consistent with the present observations. For a better understanding, further studies of this new phenomenon during future TSE are suggested. 相似文献

Application of a New Symmetry-Based Cluster Validity Index for Satellite Image Segmentation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An important approach for image segmentation is clustering pixels based on their spectral properties. In particular, satellite images contain land cover types, some of which cover significantly large areas, while some (e.g., bridges and roads) occupy relatively much smaller regions. Automatically detecting regions or clusters of such widely varying sizes presents a challenging task. In this letter, a symmetry-based cluster validity index, named Sym-index (Symmetry distance-based index), is proposed. It is able to correctly indicate the presence of clusters of different sizes as long as they are internally symmetrical. A genetic-algorithm-based clustering technique that optimizes the Sym-index is used for image segmentation where the number of clusters is determined automatically. The superiority of the proposed index, as compared to other indices, is established for automatically segmenting the land cover types from SPOT and Indian Remote Sensing satellite images of two different cities in India. 相似文献
