Recent field prospecting in the Cretaceous sequences of the lower Narmada valley has led to the discovery of three isolated archosaur teeth from the upper part of marine Cretaceous rocks of the Bagh Group. The specimens were recovered by surface prospecting from an oyster‐bearing green sandstone bed occurring at the top of the Coralline Limestone (Coniacian) from a site near Phutibawri village, Dhar District, Madhya Pradesh, India. Of the three teeth recovered from this horizon, two are identified with abelisaurid dinosaurs and the third one with an indeterminate crocodile. The abelisaurid teeth conform to the premaxillary and maxillary tooth morphology of Majungasaurus and Indosuchus. Earlier reports of abelisaurid dinosaurs from India are from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Lameta Group of Jabalpur, Pisdura (Central India) and Balasinor (Western India) and Upper Cretaceous (Late Maastrichtian) Kallamedu Formation (South India). As no associated age diagnostic fossils are found, the specimens described here are considered to represent pre‐Late to Late Maastrichtian age based on the known ages of the underlying and overlying formations. The new finds, therefore, document stratigraphically the oldest occurrence of abelisaurid dinosaurs known from the Indian subcontinent. 相似文献
The possible use of activated alumina powder (AAP) as adsorbent for Cr(III), Ni(II), and Cu(II) from synthetic solutions was investigated. The effect of various parameters on batch adsorption process such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, particle size, temperature, and initial metal ions concentration were studied to optimize the conditions for maximum metal ion removal. Both higher (molar) and lower (ppm) initial metal ion concentration sets were subjected to adsorption on AAP. Adsorption process revealed that equilibrium was established in 50 min for Cr(III) at pH 4.70, 80 min for Ni(II) at pH 7.00, and 40 min for Cu(II) at pH 3.02. Percentage removal was found to be highest at 55°C for Cr(III) and Ni(II) with 420 µm and 45°C for Cu(II) with 250‐µm particle size AAP. A dosage of 2 g for Cr(III), 8 g for Ni(II), and 10 g Cu(II) gave promising data in the metal ion removal. The adsorption process followed Langmuir as well as Freundlich models. The thermodynamics of adsorption of these metal ions on activated aluminum indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Present study indicates that AAP can act as a promising adsorbent for industrial wastewater treatment. 相似文献
Climate model simulations for the twenty-first century point toward changing characteristics of precipitation. This paper
investigates the impact of climate change on precipitation in the Kansabati River basin in India. A downscaling method, based
on Bayesian Neural Network (BNN), is applied to project precipitation generated from six Global Climate Models (GCMs) using
two scenarios (A2 and B2). Wet and dry spell properties of monthly precipitation series at five meteorologic stations in the
Kansabati basin are examined by plotting successive wet and dry durations (in months) against their number of occurrences
on a double-logarithmic paper. Straight-line relationships on such graphs show that power laws govern the pattern of successive
persistent wet and dry monthly spells. Comparison of power-law behaviors provides useful interpretation about the temporal
precipitation pattern. The impact of low-frequency precipitation variability on the characteristics of wet and dry spells
is also evaluated using continuous wavelet transforms. It is found that inter-annual cycles play an important role in the
formation of wet and dry spells. 相似文献
The physics of solar forcing of the climate and long term climate change is summarized, and the role of energetic charged
particles (including cosmic rays) on cloud formation and their effect on climate is examined. It is considered that the cosmic
ray-cloud cover hypothesis is not supported by presently available data and further investigations (during Forbush decreases
and at other times) should be analyzed to further examine the hypothesis. Another player in climate is lightning through the
production of NOx; this greenhouse gas, water vapour in the troposphere (and stratosphere) and carbon dioxide influence the global temperature
through different processes. The enhancement of aerosol concentrations and their distribution in the troposphere also affect
the climate and may result in enhanced lightning activity. Finally, the roles of atmospheric conductivity on the electrical
activity of thunderstorms and lightning discharges in relation to climate are discussed. 相似文献
Maheshwaram watershed is situated in Ranga Reddy district of at a distance of about 30 km south of Hyderabad. The watershed
has an area of 53 km2 and has hard rock aquifers with semi-arid climate. The study area has been expanding at a fast pace and now has the distinction
of being one of the fastest growing urban centers, facing the problem of groundwater depletion and quality deterioration due
to the absence of perennial source of surface water and also due to over exploitation. Human activities involving industrial
and agricultural development and the inadequate management of land and water resources have, directly or indirectly resulted
in the degradation of environment viz. water and soil. 相似文献
We compiled available information of damages and other effects caused by the September 18, 2011, Sikkim–Nepal border earthquake from the print and electronic media, and interpreted them to obtain Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) at over 142 locations. These values are used to prepare the intensity map of the Sikkim earthquake. The map reveals several interesting features. Within the meizoseismal area, the most heavily damaged villages are concentrated toward the eastern edge of the inferred fault, consistent with eastern directivity. The intensities are amplified significantly in areas located along rivers, within deltas or on coastal alluvium such as mud flats and salt pans. We have also derived empirical relation between MMI and ground motion parameters using least square regression technique and compared it with the available relationships available for other regions of the world. Further, seismic intensity information available for historical earthquakes which have occurred in NE Himalayas along with present intensity has been utilized for developing attenuation relationship for NE India using two-step regression analyses. The derived attenuation relation is useful for assessing damage of a potential future earthquake (earthquake scenario-based planning purposes) for the northeast Himalaya region.
River adjustment and incision in the Sabarmati basin, Gujarat, India have been examined at a site near Mahudi. Towards this, the morphostratigraphy and depositional chronometry of the middle alluvial plains were investigated. The upper fluvial sequence, along with the overlying aeolian sand and riverbed scroll plains, provide clues to the evolution of the present Sabarmati River. Sedimentological analyses of the upper fluvial sequence indicate its deposition by a meandering river system during what is believed to be a persistent wetter phase. Luminescence chronology bracketed this sequence to between 54 and 30 ka, which corresponds to Oxygen Isotope Stage-3, during which the SW monsoon was enhanced. The overlying aeolian sand has been dated to 12 ka, indicating that dune accretion occurred simultaneously with the strengthening of the SW monsoon during the Early Holocene. Adjustment of the Sabarmati along a N–S transect is placed around 12 ka and the incision is bracketed between 12 and 4.5 ka. River adjustment could have been tectonic; however, the incision was facilitated by the availability of continuous flow in the river caused by the SW monsoon. The basin experienced two tectonic events at about 3 and 0.3 ka, as demonstrated by the morphology of the scroll plains. 相似文献
Abstract Geological field, petrographic, and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility studies help in understanding the evolutionary history of the Garhwal synform that lies in the western Outer Lesser Himalaya. Orientations of the magnetic susceptibility axes reveal large variations at short distances as a result of superimposed deformation, and predominant stress conditions favorable for normal faulting. Rocks forming the outer limbs of the Garhwal Synform are metamorphosed up to the lower greenschist facies. The metamorphic grade increases to chlorite zone in the inner limb and the core is characterized by chlorite–biotite to garnet zones. The different grades of metamorphism are separated by thrusts and the structure is described as a pop-up klippen. 相似文献
The Kwinana Coastal Fumigation Study took place inearly 1995 at Kwinana near Perth in Western Australia. The study involved surface and elevated meteorologicaland plume fumigation measurements in sea-breeze flowsnear the coast, and has yielded a comprehensive dataset that is suitable for assessing meteorological andplume dispersion models. In this paper, wesimulate the meteorology and turbulence on four casestudy days, and compare model results with thedetailed surface and aircraft measurements takenduring the study. These days had surface synopticwinds ranging from southerly to northeasterly, witheither stable or near-neutral temperature profilesover the sea.The model used was based on that developed by Hurley(Boundary-Layer Meteorol.83, 43–73, 1997), but extended here to allow domain nesting, optional non-hydrostatic simulations, and a vegetativecanopy at the surface. The model was forced bystandard weather service synoptic data, and thesimulations have captured the essential features ofthe strong sea-breeze circulation observed on thesedays. The boundary-layer structure over the sea waspredicted to be near-neutral or stable in agreementwith the observations on the particular day. The windspeed and direction in the sea-breeze flow weregenerally predicted well, although the predictedmaximum inflow speed over the land was a little toohigh. The potential temperature was generallyover-predicted, but temperature gradients agreed well.Predicted turbulence levels in the bottom-half of thethermal internal boundary layer compared well to theobservations, but under-estimated the observations inthe in the upper half of this layer. Near-surfacemeasurements of meteorological variables werepredicted well over the entire diurnal cycle, althoughthe predicted sea-breeze onset was generally tooearly. A quantitative model evaluation for thenear-surface sites showed the model performance to bebetter than that from other studies, with Index ofAgreement (IOA) values of 0.8 (wind speed) and 0.96(temperature), compared with values of 0.5–0.6 (windspeed) and 0.33 (temperature) obtained from otherstudies. The availability of new higher resolution synopticanalyses should obviate the lack of spatial andtemporal resolution in synoptic inputs. Theincorporation of these higher resolution synopticinputs and new parameterisation schemes should improvefuture model performance. 相似文献
The characteristics of directional spread parameters at intermediate water depth are investigated based on a cosine power ‘2s' directional spreading model. This is based on wave measurements carried out using a Datawell directional waverider buoy in 23 m water depth. An empirical equation for the frequency dependent directional spreading parameter is presented. Directional spreading function estimated based on the Maximum Entropy Method is compared with those obtained using a cosine power ‘2s' parameter model. A set of empirical equations relating the directional spreading parameter corresponding to the peak of wave spectrum to other wave parameters like significant wave height and period are obtained. It shows that the wave directional spreading at peak wave frequency can be related to the non-linearity parameter, which allows estimation of directional spreading without reference to wind information. 相似文献
