Plants and animals in brackish marshes are adapted to live within a wide, yet finite, range of conditions. Events that shift the environmental state beyond that range can dramatically alter habitats and, potentially, the numerous ecosystem services they provide. A prolonged exceptional drought in Texas (October 2010–January 2012) provided a unique opportunity to understand how brackish wetland habitats respond to an extreme environmental event. We examined marshes in the Lower Neches Wildlife Management Area (Texas, USA) that fell within the drought affected area, including restored areas and an adjacent reference marsh. To test our hypothesis that the brackish marsh community would be sensitive to drought conditions, we quantified emergent plant and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and animal (invertebrates, fish) characteristics in summer 2010 and 2011. In spite of its severity, the exceptional drought of 2011 did not have a negative impact on emergent plant communities: biomass, stem density, and chlorophyll a concentrations were the same in pre-drought and drought years in all restored and reference areas. In contrast, SAV biomass was reduced by up to 100 % in the drought year. Some fish and invertebrate densities were also reduced by an order of magnitude or more, possibly due to the loss of SAV. Aquatic faunal species composition was markedly different in the drought year, largely due to the loss of the hydrobiid snail Probythinella protera and the gain of some marine species, including Gulf menhaden (Brevoortia patronus), brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus), and white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus). By altering aquatic the plant and animal community, this drought event may subsequently reduce trophic support for higher consumers, or contribute to a decline in water quality. Restoration monitoring programs that only focus on relatively stress-resistant, emergent wetland plant communities may underestimate the sensitivity of these ecosystems to extreme environmental events like droughts.  相似文献

The objective of the article presented herein is to highlight the specific issue of the protection of water sources in the vicinity of golf courses. Currently we have experienced the construction of a large number of golf courses, which are often found in areas where the protection of natural groundwater resources is needed. In this article, limit conditions are specified, which could be used in construction of other golf courses in the world, where there is a potential threat of contamination of groundwater resources. The issue is demonstrated on a case study in the area of a water resource, Rusovce. A major concern of golf courses is the fact that in an apparently clean environment of these anthropogenic structures contamination occurs, resulting from the maintenance, and the current legislation does not address this specific group of areas. These are particularly dangerous substances derived from fertilizer and turf protection, in particular the use of pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, acaricides, e.g. nematocides, and related products, such as growth regulators used for plant protection). The results of the modelling at the water source, Rusovce, show that the combination of negative factors (for example, the groundwater table level close to the surface along with extremely high precipitation totals or the areas flooding and the lack of a golf course bedrock sealing) the limit value of 0.100 μg/l of pesticides concentration in groundwater was exceeded up to 0.880 μg/l. Similarly, such excess may occur in the case of an emergency situation (for example, the spilling of the barrel with the pesticide), where the concentration of pesticides in groundwater may be increased up to 0.874 μg/l in standard conditions (without flooding with an average depth of groundwater table level beneath the terrain). But even under a standard level of security for the establishment and operation of a golf course and standard procedures for the maintenance of the lawn, the concentration of pesticides in the wells reached 0.0001 μg/l.  相似文献

Using chemical and petrologic evidence and modeling, we deduce that two chondrule‐like particles named Iris and Callie, from Stardust cometary track C2052,12,74, formed in an environment very similar to that seen for type II chondrules in meteorites. Iris was heated near liquidus, equilibrated, and cooled at ≤100 °C h‐1 and within ≈2 log units of the IW buffer with a high partial pressure of Na such as would be present with dust enrichments of ≈103. There was no detectable metamorphic, nebular, or aqueous alteration. In previous work, Ogliore et al. (2012) reported that Iris formed late, >3 Myr after CAIs, assuming 26Al was homogenously distributed, and was rich in heavy oxygen. Iris may be similar to assemblages found only in interplanetary dust particles and Stardust cometary samples called Kool particles. Callie is chemically and isotopically very similar, but not identical to Iris.  相似文献

In recent years it has become of geophysical interest to detect a possible time variation of the low-degree coefficients of the Earth's gravity field, in particular the (2, 2) tesseral harmonic. We investigate the possibility of detecting such a phenomenon via analysis of the tracking data from LAGEOS, the passive geodynamics satellite tracked by laser stations on the ground. For this purpose the main problems are caused: (i) for short orbital arcs, by the irregular distribution in time of the tracking data, and by the dynamical effects of oceanic tides, which cannot be easily separated from the effects of geopotential changes; (ii) for long orbital arcs, by the difficulty of reliably predicting the variable drag-like force that is causing a slow semimajor axis decay. We estimate that a relative accuracy of the order of 10–4 in the (2, 2) coefficients can be reached provided that a larger number of higher technology laser stations is available, and that better modelling is possible of the drag-like force. Both these conditions seem quite unrealistic at present. If a relative accuracy better than 10–4 has to be reached, an effective separation of the tidal perturbations is also needed, since they give rise to perturbations with a similar signature.  相似文献

We compare photospheric line-of-sight magnetograms from the Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) Vector Spectro-Magnetograph (VSM) instrument with observations from the 150-foot Solar Tower at Mt. Wilson Observatory (MWO), the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). We find very good agreement between VSM and the other data sources for both disk-averaged flux densities and pixel-by-pixel measurements. We show that the VSM mean flux density time series is of consistently high signal-to-noise ratio with no significant zero offsets. We discuss in detail some of the factors ?C spatial resolution, flux dependence, and position on the solar disk ?C affecting the determination of scaling between VSM and SOHO/MDI or SDO/HMI magnetograms. The VSM flux densities agree well with spatially smoothed data from MDI and HMI, although the scaling factors show a clear dependence on flux density. The factor to convert VSM to HMI increases with increasing flux density (from ??1 to ??1.5). The nonlinearity is smaller for the VSM vs. SOHO/MDI scaling factor (from ??1 to ??1.2).  相似文献

We studied primary ore samples from Kalmakyr, a giant Cu–Au–Mo porphyry deposit in eastern Uzbekistan. Disseminated and stockwork-type high-grade Cu–Au–Mo mineralization showed average concentrations of 55 ppb Pd, 5.5 ppb Pt, 0.95 ppb Rh, 0.49 ppb Ir, and 4.1 ppm Au (n = 8). This type of mineralization is characterized by the presence of pyrite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and gold. A peak Pd content of 292 ppb was determined in a base-metal-rich quartz vein in granodiorite porphyry, which contains galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and gold. Palladium correlates with Cu, Ag, Se, and S. Mineralogical and laser ablation ICP-MS study confirmed that Pd is homogeneously distributed in chalcopyrite, which contains up to 110 ppm Pd, and tetrahedrite, containing up to 20 ppm Pd. An assessment of the Pd and Pt budget at Kalmakyr showed the potential of approximately 17 t of Pd and 1.7 t of Pt.  相似文献

The Asian Dust Aerosol Model 2 with the MM5 meteorological model has been employed to estimate the dust emission, dust concentration, and wet and dry deposition of dust in the Asian region for the month of March in 2010. It is found that the model simulates quite reasonably the dust (PM10) concentrations both in the dust source region and the downstream region of Korea. The starting and ending times of most dust events and their peak concentration occurrence times are well simulated. The monthly mean maximum surface dust concentration (PM10) is found to be 267???g?m?3 in the domain of central northern China (CNC). Monthly total maximum dust emission of more than 32?t km?2 and that of deposition of more than 25.4?t km?2 (dry deposition of 24?t km?2 and wet deposition of 1.4?t km?2) are found to occur in the domain CNC, whereas the monthly mean minimum surface dust concentration (PM10) is found to be 0.2???g?m?3 in the domain of the Tibetan Plateau, where the monthly total dust emission (4?kg?km?2) and the monthly total dust deposition (9?kg?km?2) are found to be minimum. This monthly total dust deposition of 9?kg?km?2 (dry deposition of 7?kg?km?2 and wet deposition of 2?kg?km?2) is as large as 2.25 times of that of emission (4?kg?km?2), suggesting net dust influx toward the Tibetan Plateau from the surrounding dust source regions. It is also found that the ratio of the total dust deposition to the total dust emission in the source region increases toward the downstream direction from 0.4 in the upstream source region of Taklimakan to 0.80 in the downstream source region of northeastern China. More than 90% of the total dust deposition is found to be contributed by dry deposition due to the lack of precipitation in the dust source region. The monthly mean dust concentration (PM10) is found to decrease with distance away from the dust source region. The monthly mean dust concentration of 62???g?m?3 over the Yellow Sea (YES) decreases to 4.3???g?m?3 over the Northwestern Pacific Ocean (NWP). The monthly total dust deposition in the downstream region is also found to decrease away from the source region from 2.33?t km?2 (dry deposition of 1.36?t km?2 and wet deposition of 0.97?t km?2) over the domain YES to 1.45?t km?2 (dry deposition of 0.16?t km?2 and wet deposition of 1.30?t km?2) over the domain NWP. A large amount of the total dust deposition over the seas is contributed by wet deposition (more than 90%), causing a small decreasing rate of the total dust deposition with distance from the source region. The estimated dust deposition could adversely impact the eco-environmental system significantly in the downstream regions of the Asian dust source region, especially over the seas.  相似文献

The Asian dust Aerosol Model 2 (ADAM2) with the MM5 meteorological model has been employed to study long-range transport process of Asian dust and to estimate dust emission, deposition (wet and dry) and concentration over the Asian dust source region and the downwind regions for dust events observed in Korea during the period of 20–29 December 2009, which is one of the dust events chosen by the 3rd Meeting of Working Group for Joint Research on Dust Sand Storm among Mongolia, China, Japan and Korea to study intensively for the development of an early warning system in Asia. It is found that the model simulates quite well the starting and ending times of dust events and the peak dust concentrations with their occurrence times both in the source region and downwind regions. The dust emission in the dust source region is found to be associated with a developing synoptic weather system accompanied with strong surface winds over the source region that usually travels east to southeastward across the source region and then turns to move northeastward toward the north western Pacific Ocean. The dust emitted in the source region is found to be split into two parts: one is transported southeastward to the East China Sea in front of the surface high pressure system and experiencing enhanced deposition due to the sinking motion induced by the southeastward traveling the surface high pressure system whereas, the other moves northeastward toward the surface low pressure system and then lifted upward to form a upper-level high dust concentration layer that results in a favorable condition for the long-range transport of dust. It is also found that the maximum ten-day total dust emission of about 23 t km?2 occurs in the domain Northwestern China (NWC). However, the maximum ten-day total dust deposition of 21 t km?2 with the maximum mean surface concentration of 555 μg m?3 and the column integrated mean concentration of 2.9 g m?2 occurs in the domain Central-northern China (CNC). The column-integrated PM10 concentration is found to increase toward northeastward especially in the domain North northeastern China (NNEC) due to the upper-level transported high PM10 concentration. The ten-day total dust deposition, mean surface PM10 and column integrated PM10 concentrations in the downwind domains are found to decrease away from the source region from 2.44 t km?2, 112 μg m?3 and 1.68 g m?2, respectively in the domain YES to 0.06 t km?2, 2.1 μg m?3 and 0.4 g m?2, respectively in the domain Northwestern Pacific 1 (NWP1). Much of the total dust deposition is largely contributed by wet deposition in the far downwind region of the seas while that is contributed by dry deposition in the source region.  相似文献

Momentum and sensible heat exchange are studied in an Arctic fjord system in Spitsbergen, Svalbard (Norway), based on tower measurements taken in January–June 2008. Due to ice-free conditions, the surface layer was unstable for most of the time, occasionally very unstable. The shape of the fjord and the surrounding topography have a large influence on the wind field. Low frequency eddies are mainly responsible for occasionally large crosswind momentum transfer that, together with upward momentum transfer (occurring in 9% of the data), invalidate conventional stability and scaling parameters. When the flow is along the fjord with moderate or high wind speeds, the Monin–Obukhov similarity theory is applicable. However, the momentum and the sensible heat exchange in the fjord system differs from the exchange taking place over the open ocean, mainly due to topographic effects.  相似文献

Changing high‐mountain environments are characterized by destabilizing ice, rock or debris slopes connected to evolving glacial lakes. Such configurations may lead to potentially devastating sequences of mass movements (process chains or cascades). Computer simulations are supposed to assist in anticipating the possible consequences of such phenomena in order to reduce the losses. The present study explores the potential of the novel computational tool r.avaflow for simulating complex process chains. r.avaflow employs an enhanced version of the Pudasaini ( 2012 ) general two‐phase mass flow model, allowing consideration of the interactions between solid and fluid components of the flow. We back‐calculate an event that occurred in 2012 when a landslide from a moraine slope triggered a multi‐lake outburst flood in the Artizón and Santa Cruz valleys, Cordillera Blanca, Peru, involving four lakes and a substantial amount of entrained debris along the path. The documented and reconstructed flow patterns are reproduced in a largely satisfactory way in the sense of empirical adequacy. However, small variations in the uncertain parameters can fundamentally influence the behaviour of the process chain through threshold effects and positive feedbacks. Forward simulations of possible future cascading events will rely on more comprehensive case and parameter studies, but particularly on the development of appropriate strategies for decision‐making based on uncertain simulation results. © 2017 The Authors.
