The economic value of long-range weather prediction is measured by the increase in social welfare arising from the use of the prediction in economic decisionmaking. This paper describes a study of the economic value of ENSO prediction to U.S. agriculture. The interdisciplinary study involved the analysis of data and models from meteorology, plant science, and economics under a framework based on Bayesian decision analysis. The estimated annual value of perfect ENSO prediction to U.S. agriculture is $323 million.  相似文献

The stability of the high-pressure phase Mg-sursassite, previously MgMgAl-pumpellyite, in ultramafic compositions has been determined in experiments in the system MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O (MASH). The breakdown of Mg-sursassite + forsterite + enstatite to pyrope + vapour with increasing temperature was bracketed at 6.0 and 7.0 GPa. Below 6.0 GPa, Mg-sursassite + forsterite + vapour reacts to chlorite + enstatite. This reaction provides a mechanism for transfer of water from chlorite- to Mg-sursassite-bearing assemblages. At pressures of 7.0 GPa and above, the assemblage Mg-sursassite + phase A + enstatite was found. Phase relations involving Mg-sursassite and phase A are considered. For bulk compositions with a low water content, the vapour-absent reaction Mg-sursassite + forsterite = pyrope + phase A + enstatite determines the upper-pressure stability of Mg-sursassite, and provides a mechanism for the complete transfer of water from Mg-sursassite to phase A-bearing assemblages. Mg-sursassite plays an important role in peridotite compositions in the subducting slab because, at temperatures below 700 °C, it can transfer water from hydrous phases such as antigorite and chlorite to high-pressure stable phases such as phase A.  相似文献

It is shown that the method recommended by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to be used to combine spectral response in the case of closely spaced modes is unnecessarily conservative for certain systems. Closely spaced modes arise in structures from symmetry and where there is a light appendage with a frequency close to one of the natural frequencies of the structure. In the former case, the closely spaced modes do not involve significant interaction between components of the system and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Guide is reasonable. The latter case, that is when there are closely spaced modes where interaction of components occurs as in the examples of light appendages and torsionally unbalanced buildings, must be treated by consideration of the interacting components. The approach proposed here is that the modes that are not closely spaced be treated by modal analysis and the closely spaced modes, in the case of two closely spaced modes, be treated as a coupled two-degree-of-freedom system. If this is done, the beat phenomenon, the most important characteristic of the interaction, is evident, as is the associated result that the peak response of the coupled system is developed much later than the peak responses obtained in the individual modes. It is shown that the square root of the sum of the squares procedure underestimates, as expected, the response for undamped and very lightly damped systems, but for damped systems the square root of the sum of the squares method can be extremely conservative. It follows that the other methods specified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for closely spaced modes must be even more conservative.  相似文献

Deposits of inferred natural origin excavated at Mineral Hill Cave, north-central Nevada, exhibit a similarity to the reported evidence for “Big-Game Hunters” from cave sites in the Great Basin. Split bone and charcoal were observed throughout the deposits. In addition, the remains of a number of animal taxa including several Pleistocene genera, which are considered to have been of economic importance, were recovered from the deposits. These findings suggest that the role of natural processes in cave deposition is of crucial importance in understanding cave-site archaeology.  相似文献

High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) provides unique information of the geological and metallurgical significance for gold and related ore minerals in the supergiant Grasberg porphyry Cu–Au deposit. Digital radiographs have proved to be an effective means of screening samples for the presence of gold for HRXCT studies. Digital radiograph effectiveness is limited by the thickness of samples (typically to ≤2 cm), as well as the associated minerals. Thus, preselecting samples for gold studies using HRXCT is most effective using digital radiographs combined with assay information. Differentiating between metallic mineral grains with relatively small differences in density, e.g., bornite (5.1 g/cm3) from chalcopyrite (4.2 g/cm3), is relatively straightforward for isolated monominerallic grains or composites in a similar lower-density matrix, but difficulties are encountered with the interpretation of typical intergrown ore minerals. X-ray beam-hardening artifacts lead to inconsistency in attenuation determination, both within and among slice images, complicating quantitative processing. However, differentiation of chalcopyrite and bornite has been successful in smaller-diameter (≤22-mm) cores of Grasberg ores. Small-diameter (≤10 mm) cores of the Grasberg stockwork Cu–Au ore were analyzed using HRXCT methods scanned at the minimum spacing currently available (7.5 μm), and data reduction protocols using the Blob3D program were modified to improve the quantification of grain sizes and shapes. Grains as small as 6.5 μm have been identified. All of these grains are in direct contact with chalcopyrite, providing support for gold distribution in porphyry copper systems being a result of exsolution from copper sulfides. HRXCT scanning (±digital radiography) precisely defines the in situ location of mineral grains of interest within a sample, which then can be studied in conventional petrographic sections, and other types of analytical studies conducted, e.g., gold trace element geochemistry.  相似文献

In order to determine how As speciation in lacustrine sediment changes as a function of local conditions, sediment cores were taken from three lakes with differing hydrologic regimes and subjected to extensive chemical and TEM analysis. The lakes (Killarney, Thompson and Swan Lakes) are located within the Coeur d’ Alene River system (northern Idaho, USA), which has been contaminated with trace metals and As, from over 100 a of sulfide mining. Previous analyses of these lakebed sediments have shown an extensive amount of contaminant metals and As associated with sub-μm grains, making them extremely difficult to analyze using standard methods (scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction). Transmission electron microscopy offers great advantages in spatial resolution and can be invaluable in determining As speciation when combined with other techniques. Data indicate that because of differences in local redox conditions, As speciation and stability is dramatically different in these lakes. Killarney and Thompson Lakes experience seasonal water-level fluctuations due to drawdown on a downstream dam, causing changes in O2 content in sediment exposed during drawdown. Swan Lake has relatively constant water levels as its only inlet is dammed. Consequently, Killarney and Thompson Lakes show an increase in labile As-bearing phases with depth, while Swan Lake data indicate stable As hosts throughout the sediment profile. Based on these observations it can be stated that As in lakebed sediments is much less mobile, and therefore less bioavailable, when water is kept at a constant level.  相似文献

Annual plants that coexist among perennial dominants might persist in microsites that are stressful to their competitors. In Californian salt marshes, where cover of annual and perennial Salicornia species are negatively correlated, we hypothesized that waterlogged depressions support the annual (Salicornia bigelovii) but not the region’s dominant perennial (Salicornia virginica). In a large restoration site, S. virginica cover was low in naturally formed pools, and our 10-cm depressions decreased its cover by approximately 30% compared to the controls. S. bigelovii grew taller and produced more flowers in waterlogged sites with low soil redox potential, and it completed its life cycle in the 5-cm-deep depressions that we created. Experimentally reducing S. virginica canopy cover in shallow depressions also increased the survival of the annual. In the greenhouse, rhizosphere oxidation was indicated as a mechanism for tolerating waterlogging, as S. bigelovii elevated the soil redox potential by 50 mV more than S. virginica did. Also, in the greenhouse, S. bigelovii seedlings actually suppressed the growth of S. virginica seedlings under increased flooding. We conclude that waterlogged microsites help sustain S. bigelovii in Californian salt marshes and that this increasingly rare plant could be managed by adding shallow depressions to restoration sites.  相似文献

ULTRACAM is a portable, high-speed imaging photometer designed to study faint astronomical objects at high temporal resolutions. ULTRACAM employs two dichroic beamsplitters and three frame-transfer CCD cameras to provide three-colour optical imaging at frame rates of up to 500 Hz. The instrument has been mounted on both the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma and the 8.2-m Very Large Telescope in Chile, and has been used to study white dwarfs, brown dwarfs, pulsars, black hole/neutron star X-ray binaries, gamma-ray bursts, cataclysmic variables, eclipsing binary stars, extrasolar planets, flare stars, ultracompact binaries, active galactic nuclei, asteroseismology and occultations by Solar System objects (Titan, Pluto and Kuiper Belt objects). In this paper we describe the scientific motivation behind ULTRACAM, present an outline of its design and report on its measured performance.  相似文献
