A thin, regionally extensive, laterally persistent sand layer identified within the Holocene coastal sequences of eastern Scotland, dated to 7000 years BP, is suggested to be a tsunami deposit. The likely source of the tsunami wave is the earthquake induced second Storegga Slide on the Norwegian continental slope at least 750 km northeast of the deposit.  相似文献

Measurements of OH reactivity were made at the Weybourne Atmospheric Observatory on the North Norfolk coast, UK in May 2004. A wide range of supporting species was also measured concurrently as part of the TORCH-2 field campaign, allowing a detailed study of the OH oxidation chemistry to be carried out. Measurements were made in a variety of air masses, with the 3 most prevalent being air from the Atlantic that arrived at the site from over mainland UK in a South Westerly direction, and much cleaner Northerly air that originated over the far North Sea or Arctic, passed over the North Sea and arrived at the site from a North/North Easterly direction. Direct OH reactivity measurements were made on 6 days during the campaign and with influence of 2 of the 3 air masses prevalent during the study period. The average, minimum and maximum measured OH reactivity are: 4.9, 1.3 and 9.7 respectively. The measured OH reactivity was compared to key OH sinks such as NO2 and CO and a general positive correlation was observed. OH reactivity (k′) was then calculated using the full range of OH sinks species that were measured (including >30 NMHCs) and their pseudo first order rate constants for reaction with OH. For much of the measurement period there is a significant difference between the measured and calculated k′, with an average value of kmeas- kcalc?=?1.9 s-1, indicative of unmeasured OH sinks. A zero-dimensional box model containing a subset of the Master Chemical Mechanism was used to calculate the OH reactivity more accurately. The simultaneously measured trace species were used as inputs to the model and their oxidative degradation was described by a chemical mechanism containing ~5,000 species. The extra OH sinks species produced by the model, resulted in an improvement in the agreement between kmeas and kcalc, however the averaged missing OH reactivity across the entire measurement period remained at 1.4 s-1. Speculation is made as to the source of this missing reactivity, including reference to studies showing that a potentially large number of high molecular weight aromatic species could be unmeasured by standard instrumentation.  相似文献

Spectral gamma ray (SGR) logs are used as stratigraphic tools in correlation, sequence stratigraphy and most recently, in clastic successions as a proxy for changes in hinterland palaeoweathering. In this study we analyse the spectral gamma ray signal recorded in two boreholes that penetrated the carbonate and evaporate‐dominated Permian–Triassic boundary (PTB) in the South Pars Gasfield (offshore Iran, Persian Gulf) in an attempt to analyse palaeoenvironmental changes from the upper Permian (Upper Dalan Formation) and lower Triassic (Lower Kangan Formation). The results are compared to lithological changes, total organic carbon (TOC) contents and published stable isotope ( δ 18O, δ 13C) results. This work is the first to consider palaeoclimatic effects on SGR logs from a carbonate/evaporate succession. While Th/U ratios compare well to isotope data (and thus a change to less arid hinterland climates from the Late Permian to the Early Triassic), Th/K ratios do not, suggesting a control not related to hinterland weathering. Furthermore, elevated Th/U ratios in the Early Triassic could reflect a global drawdown in U, rather than a more humid episode in the sediment hinterlands, with coincident changes in TOC. Previous work that used spectral gamma ray data in siliciclastic successions as a palaeoclimate proxy may not apply in carbonate/evaporate sedimentary rocks. The sedimentological characteristics of in situ and paraglacially reworked till are compared at recently deglaciated sites in Norway. Glacigenic deposits reworked by debris flows are shown to retain many of the characteristics of the parent sediments, and cannot readily be distinguished from in situ till in terms of fabric strength or type, clast imbrication, shape, angularity or texture, matrix granulometry or packing. Paraglacially re-worked sediments appear to differ from in situ tills only in terms of preferred clast orientation (down flow rather than downvalley) and their structural and lithofacies characteristics. These criteria are employed to differentiate paraglacial sediments from unre-worked tills exposed in valley-side sections. The stratigraphic relations between these indicate glacial reworking of earlier paraglacial sediments as well as paraglacial remobilisation of glacigenic deposits, indicating cyclic alternation of glacial and paraglacial sediment transport.  相似文献
