Well-preserved siliciclastic domal stromatolites, up to 2 m wide and 1·5 m high, are found in a 10 to 15 m thick interval within the Late Ordovician Eureka Quartzite of Southern Nevada and Eastern California, USA. These stromatolites appear as either isolated features or patchy clusters that contain more than 70% by volume quartz grains; their association with planar, trough and herringbone cross-bedding suggests that they were formed in an upper shoreface environment with high hydraulic energy. In this environment, sand bars or dunes may have provided localized shelter for initial microbial mat colonization. Biostabilization and early lithification of microbial mats effectively prevented erosion during tidal flushing and storm surges, and the prevalence of translucent quartz sand grains permitted light penetration into the sediment, leading to thick microbial mat accretion and the formation of domal stromatolites. Decimetre-scale to metre-scale stromatolite domes may have served as localized shelter and nucleation sites for further microbial mat colonization, forming patchy stromatolite clusters. Enrichment of iron minerals, including pyrite and hematite, within dark internal laminae of the stromatolites indicates anaerobic mineralization of microbial mats. The occurrence of stromatolites in the Eureka Quartzite provides an example of microbial growth in highly stressed, siliciclastic sedimentary environments, in which microbial communities may have been able to create microenvironments promoting early cementation/lithification essential for the growth and preservation of siliciclastic stromatolites.  相似文献

During the mid-Cretaceous, extensive magmatism occurred in theIndian Ocean to form volcanic portions of the southern and centralKerguelen Plateau, Elan Bank and Broken Ridge. The iron-rich ultramafic pegmatites comprise a suite of coarse-grainedrocks that form discordant bodies within the layered sequenceof the Bushveld Complex. These pegmatites, which are considerablymore abundant than is generally realized, provide evidence forthe differentiation of iron-rich residual melts. The pegmatitesare composed largely of iron-rich olivine and clinopyroxene,together with Ti-magnetite and ilmenite. Feldspar is characteristicallyabsent, but paradoxically the pegmatites preferentially replaceanorthositic cumulates. Two subgroups are recognized, olivine-clinopyroxenepegmatite and Fe-Ti oxides pegmatite. With increased stratigraphicheight the pegmatites become richer in Fe-Ti oxides. Thus, olivine-clinopyroxenepegmatite is prevalent in the Upper Critical and Lower MainZones, whereas Fe-Ti oxide pegmatite is restricted to the UpperMain and Upper Zones. Zoned pegmatite, with a core of Fe-Tioxide pegmatite, is transitional between the two subgroups. New whole-rock and electron microprobe analyses of olivine-clinopyroxenepegmatite from the Upper Critical and Lower Main Zones provideconvincing evidence that their composition is directly relatedto height. Cryptic compositional variations are analogous tothose displayed by the layered cumulates, but for a given heightthe pegmatites are always more evolved. Compositions of clinopyroxenein the pegmatites reflect a near-linear relationship with height,whereas cumulus pyroxenes display upward iron-enrichment trendscomplicated by replenishment and reaction with trapped intercumulusliquid. The olivine-clinopyroxene pegmatite formed by magmatic replacementof earlier-formed cumulates in response to infiltration of iron-richmelts. Suitably differentiated melts comprised intercumulusand residual liquids derived from thick anorthosite layers.The absence of feldspar, although not fully understood, is attributedto an immiscible relationship between dense, iron-rich meltsand light, silica-alkali-rich liquids. The latter infiltratedupward to be reincorporated into the resident magma. The iron-richmelts, however, drained down into the crystallizing cumulatepile. Channelling along early-formed fractures and joints wassignificant, locally resulting in huge pipe-like bodies of pegmatite. The iron-rich melts became increasingly differentiated withheight, partly in response to the fractional crystallizationof more evolved cumulates. The olivine-clinopyroxene pegmatitesare related to infiltration of Fe-Ti oxide-rich silicate melt,whereas Fe-Ti oxide pegmatite is ascribed to Fe-Ti oxide liquid,as originally argued by Bateman (1951). The Bushveld Complexfollowed the Fenner trend of almost uninterrupted iron enrichment.Evidence of pronounced iron enrichment is, however, manifestedin the discordant iron-rich ultramafic pegmatites several thousandsof metres below the height at which iron-rich cumulates areobserved.  相似文献

A simple ecological model underlies contemporary fire policy in many West African countries. The model holds that the timing (or seasonality) of annual savanna fires is a principal determinant of vegetation cover. The model's origin can be traced to the ideas held by influential colonial scientists who viewed anthropogenic fire as a prime force of regional environmental degradation. The main evidence in support of the model derives from the results of a series of long-term burning experiments carried out during last century. The experimental results have been repeatedly mapped onto fire policy often taking the form of a three-tiered model in which fire exclusion is considered the ultimate management objective, late dry-season fire is discouraged and early dry-season fire is allowed but only under specific, often state-controlled circumstances. This paper provides a critique of contemporary fire policy in the region and the fire ecology model on which it is based. Through an analysis of burn scars for the 2002–3 fire season generated from ETM+ imagery, the study documents the spatiotemporal pattern of burning for an area in southern Mali. It argues that current policy, which is informed by an a-spatial model, cannot adequately account for the critical pattern of burning that is characteristic of the region. A reinterpretation of the burning experiments is presented in light of four factors: empirical data; recent developments in patch-mosaic theory; historical evidence on the effects of fire suppression; and data on indigenous burning strategies, all of which suggest a need to reconsider current fire policy.  相似文献

The optimum parameters of tuned mass dampers (TMD) that result in considerable reduction in the response of structures to seismic loading are presented. The criterion used to obtain the optimum parameters is to select, for a given mass ratio, the frequency (tuning) and damping ratios that would result in equal and large modal damping in the first two modes of vibration. The parameters are used to compute the response of several single and multi-degree-of-freedom structures with TMDs to different earthquake excitations. The results indicate that the use of the proposed parameters reduces the displacement and acceleration responses significantly. The method can also be used in vibration control of tall buildings using the so-called ‘mega-substructure configuration’, where substructures serve as vibration absorbers for the main structure. It is shown that by selecting the optimum TMD parameters as proposed in this paper, significant reduction in the response of tall buildings can be achieved. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Near-surface processes on glaciers, including water flow over bare ice and through seasonal snow and firn, have a significant effect on the speed, volume and chemistry of water flow through the glacier. The transient nature of the seasonal snow profoundly affects the water discharge and chemistry. Water flow through snow is fairly slow compared with flow over bare ice and a thinning snowpack on a glacier decreases the delay between peak meltwater input and peak stream discharge. Furthermore, early spring melt flushes the snowpack of solutes and by mid-summer the melt water flowing into the glacier is fairly clean by comparison. The firn, a relatively constant feature of glaciers, attenuates variations in water drainage into the glacier by temporarily storing water in saturated layer. Bare ice exerts opposite influences by accentuating variations in runoff by water flowing over the ice surface. The melt of firn and ice contributes relatively clean (solute-free) water to the glacier water system.  相似文献

The Early to Middle Jurassic Talkeetna Arc section exposed inthe Chugach Mountains of south–central Alaska is 5–18km wide and extends for over 150 km. This accreted island arcincludes exposures of upper mantle to volcanic upper crust.The section comprises six lithological units, in order of decreasingdepth: (1) residual upper mantle harzburgite (with lesser proportionsof dunite); (2) pyroxenite; (3) basal gabbronorite; (4) lowercrustal gabbronorite; (5) mid-crustal plutonic rocks; (6) volcanicrocks. The pyroxenites overlie residual mantle peridotite, withsome interfingering of the two along the contact. The basalgabbronorite overlies pyroxenite, again with some interfingeringof the two units along their contact. Lower crustal gabbronorite(10 km thick) includes abundant rocks with well-developed modallayering. The mid-crustal plutonic rocks include a heterogeneousassemblage of gabbroic rocks, dioritic to tonalitic rocks (30–40%area), and concentrations of mafic dikes and chilled mafic inclusions.The volcanic rocks (7 km thick) range from basalt to rhyolite.Many of the evolved volcanic compositions are a result of fractionalcrystallization processes whose cumulate products are directlyobservable in the lower crustal gabbronorites. For example,Ti and Eu enrichments in lower crustal gabbronorites are mirroredby Ti and Eu depletions in evolved volcanic rocks. In addition,calculated parental liquids from ion microprobe analyses ofclinopyroxene in lower crustal gabbronorites indicate that theclinopyroxenes crystallized in equilibrium with liquids whosecompositions were the same as those of the volcanic rocks. Thecompositional variation of the main series of volcanic and chilledmafic rocks can be modeled through fractionation of observedphase compositions and phase proportions in lower crustal gabbronorite(i.e. cumulates). Primary, mantle-derived melts in the TalkeetnaArc underwent fractionation of pyroxenite at the base of thecrust. Our calculations suggest that more than 25 wt % of theprimary melts crystallized as pyroxenites at the base of thecrust. The discrepancy between the observed proportion of pyroxenites(less than 5% of the arc section) and the proportion requiredby crystal fractionation modeling (more than 25%) may be bestunderstood as the result of gravitational instability, withdense ultramafic cumulates, probably together with dense garnetgranulites, foundering into the underlying mantle during thetime when the Talkeetna Arc was magmatically active, or in theinitial phases of slow cooling (and sub-solidus garnet growth)immediately after the cessation of arc activity.
