The process of second harmonic plasma emission is considered, where two simplifying approximations made in previous treatments are relaxed. The revised theory can account for strong polarisation observed in some harmonic coronal type III bursts, and predicts that a correlation between these bursts and the fastest electron beam speeds associated with type III emission should be apparent. These high observed degrees of polarisation could not be explained in the earlier theory. In most cases, polarisation in the sense of the magnetoionic o-mode is predicted. The predicted degree of polarisation is shown to be strongly dependent on the form of the Langmuir wave number spectrum, and in particular on the magnitude of the wave number offset between beam-driven and backscattered Langmuir waves. 相似文献

Current understanding of bedform dynamics is largely based on field and laboratory observations of bedforms in steady flow environments. There are relatively few investigations of bedforms in flows dominated by unsteadiness associated with rapidly changing flows or tides. As a consequence, the ability to predict bedform response to variable flow is rudimentary. Using high‐resolution multibeam bathymetric data, this study explores the dynamics of a dune field developed by tidally modulated, fluvially dominated flow in the Fraser River Estuary, British Columbia, Canada. The dunes were dominantly low lee angle features characteristic of large, deep river channels. Data were collected over a field ca 1·0 km long and 0·5 km wide through a complete diurnal tidal cycle during the rising limb of the hydrograph immediately prior to peak freshet, yielding the most comprehensive characterization of low‐angle dunes ever reported. The data show that bedform height and lee angle slope respond to variable flow by declining as the tide ebbs, then increasing as the tide rises and the flow velocities decrease. Bedform lengths do not appear to respond to the changes in velocity caused by the tides. Changes in the bedform height and lee angle have a counterclockwise hysteresis with mean flow velocity, indicating that changes in the bedform geometry lag changes in the flow. The data reveal that lee angle slope responds directly to suspended sediment concentration, supporting previous speculation that low‐angle dune morphology is maintained by erosion of the dune stoss and crest at high flow, and deposition of that material in the dune trough. 相似文献

The layer forming the Earth’s solid cover is considered to be a uniformly cooling mantle body of low viscosity involved in the convection process. Its cooling is accompanied by the formation of Rayleigh–Benard cells transformed into primary blocks. Their dimensions and dynamics in the subsequent evolution of the Earth’s lithosphere were repeatedly disturbed by superglobal geodynamic cycles involving changes in the area and dynamics of the blocks, some of which were partially absorbed by the mantle, while others were generated for the first time up to the current state. The variably ranked lithosphere blocks transformed into linear dimensions were arranged in a logical series of lithosphere destruction: from convection of the cooling Earth and initial block divisibility of the protolithosphere to its recent plate tectonics and intensive variably ranked fragmentation and fracturing of the plates under the conditions of solid body fragmentation. Convection in the mantle is a genetic endogenic source of the first protolithosphere divisibility. Megablock and subsequent lithosphere divisibility are consistent with the process of crushing of a solid body. 相似文献

Textures of tinguaite dykes cutting the alkaline Khibiny massif in the Kola Peninsula, Russia, are described. They are characterized by a combination of a fractal microfracture network dividing rock into pencil-like cells and of a concentric rhythmical zonation in almost all of them. The latter is formed by interchange of volatile-enriched and volatile-depleted mineral zones. The location of the textures only where dykes contact host khibinites appears to point out the contraction nature of the microfracture network. The cooling time calculated agrees well with this hypothesis. The zonation appears to have arisen through autometamorphic processes with two main competing factors, namely (a) overall cooling of the system and (b) periodic depletion of it in some elements, mainly Na and K. Another mechanism which may be applied to explain the zonation is the known Marangoni Instability effect at the early stage of evolution of the volatile-saturated phonolite melt. Thus, tinguaite textures are caused by nonspecific influences external to the system and may be regarded as an example of self-organization in nature. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations in thermodynamic and kinematic parameters of structural elements of solar granulation are investigated by solving the inverse nonequilibrium radiative transfer problem using the observational data from the Vacuum Tower Telescope (duration of observations 2.6 h). In the lower photosphere, we have detected long-living (with lifetime up to 1.5 h) structures—trees of fragmenting granules. They occur as a result of the division of an ascending granular flow into several fragments, which can be repeated multiple times. We have found that approximately 67% of the regions with the highest positive variations of pressure correspond to the time and place of fragmentation of granular flows; approximately 12% of the regions correspond to the approach of adjacent structures. 相似文献

Periodicites in hydrologic data are frequently estimated and studied. In some cases the periodic components are subtracted from the data to obtain the stochastic components. In other cases the physical reasons for the occurrence of these periodicities are investigated. Apart from the annual cycle in the hydrologic data, periods corresponding to the 11 year sunspot cycle, the Hale cycle and others have been detected.The conclusions from most of these studies depend on the reliability and robustness of the methods used to detect these periodicities. Several spectral analysis methods have been proposed to investigate periodicities in time series data. Several of these have been compared to each other. The methods by Siddiqui and Wang and by Damsleth and Spjotvoll, which are stepwise procedures of spectrum estimation, have not been evaluated. 相似文献

In this paper we report the results of the analysis of rare earth (REE), large-ion lithophile (LILE), and high field strength (HFSE) elements in minerals from the alkaline lamprophyre dikes of the Kola region and the Kaiserstuhl province by the local method of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The contents of Y, Li, Rb, Ba, Th, U, Ta, Nb, Sr, Hf, Zr, Pb, Be, Sc, V, Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Ga, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu were measured in olivine, melilite, clinopyroxene, amphibole, phlogopite, nepheline, apatite, perovskite, and the host fine-grained groundmass. The obtained data on trace element partitioning among the mineral phases of the alkaline ultrabasic rocks of the dike series indicate that the main mineral hosts for the HFSEs and REEs in alkaline picrites, olivine melanephelinites, and melilitites are perovskite and apatite comprising more than 90% of these elements. Among major rock-forming minerals, melilite, clinopyroxene, and highly magnesian amphibole make a significant contribution to the balance of REEs during the evolution of melanephelinite melts. The partition coefficients of Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Sc, V, Cr, Ga, Y, Li, Rb, Ba, Th, U, Ta, Nb, Sr, Hf, Zr, Pb, Be, and all of the REEs were calculated for olivine, clinopyroxene, amphibole, phlogopite, nepheline, perovskite, and apatite on the basis of mineral/groundmass ratios. Variations in the composition of complex zoned clinopyroxene phenocrysts reflect the conditions of polybaric crystallization of melanephelinite melt, which began when the magmas arrived at the base of the lower crust and continued during the whole period of their ascent to the surface. The formation of green cores in clinopyroxene is an indicator of mixing between primary melanephelinite melts and phonolite magmas under upper mantle conditions. The estimation of the composition of primary melts for the rocks of the alkaline ultrabasic series of the Kola province indicated a single primary magma for the whole series. This magma produced pyroxene cumulates and complementary melilitolites, foidolites, and nepheline syenites. 相似文献

The effects of source size on plume behaviour have been examined in a 1.2 m wind tunnel boundary layer for isokinetic sources with diameters from 3 to 35 mm at source heights of 230 mm and at ground level. Experimental measurements of mean concentration and the variance, intermittency and probability density functions of the concentration fluctuations were obtained. In addition, a fluctuating Gaussian plume model is presented which reproduces many of the observed features of the elevated emission. The mean plume width becomes independent of source size much more rapidly than the instantaneous plume width. Since it is the meandering of the instantaneous plume which generates most of the concentration fluctuations near the source, these are also dependent on source size. The flux of variance in the plume reaches a maximum, whose value is greatest for the smallest source size, close to the source and thereafter is monotonically decreasing. The intermittency factor reaches a minimum, whose value is lowest for the smallest source, and increases back towards one. Concentration fluctuations for the ground-level source are much less dependent on source size due to the effects of the surface. 相似文献
