In the Alexander von Humboldt National Park in eastern Cuba many endemic animals and plants are found in various different natural habitats, which are considered to be the most important ones for in-situ conservation in the entire Insular Caribbean. In some areas of the National Park agriculture is practised. Thus, the objective of this study was to document and analyse the different land use activities and their consequences for local resource management and conservation of biodiversity in two village areas. A particular question was: what has changed since the foundation of the National Park in 1996? As time series data for land use and aerial photographs were not available for this part of Cuba, a qualitative evaluation was carried out. For this, six different land use units were mapped in 2001 and additional information gathered for areas with special interest related to sustainable land use and resource conservation. Although most parts of the study area are influenced to various degrees by human impact, the different types of land use seem presently not to have a crucial or detrimental impact on the land resources of the Alexander von Humboldt National Park. However, exploitation of the natural resources in certain areas could be improved with different management options to reach sustainability as well as to meet the conservation objectives of the National Park. This includes reduced or abandoned agricultural use of steep slopes to reduce erosion risk as well as a facilitated regeneration of natural vegetation in many parts of the study area to be able to conserve the high valuable biodiversity of the Park. Environmental education seems to have played an important and successful role since the foundation of the Park in 1996. Since then, cropping on steep slopes as well as illegal logging and poaching could be reduced.  相似文献

The magnetic properties of the late Quaternary hemipelagic sediment from piston core BS77-15 taken in the Tyrrhenian Sea were investigated and the results compared with palaeoclimatic records. The magnetic mineralogy of the sediment was studied and the magnetic carriers were identified by their spectra of coercivity and unblocking temperature. Investigations of rock magnetic parameters such as the Natural Remanent Magnetization (NRM), the low-field magnetic susceptibility χ, the frequency-dependent susceptibility χ fd , the acquisition of Anhysteretic Magnetization (ARM) and Isothermal Magnetization (IRM) and the Median Destructive Field (MDF) have established the downcore variations in terms of magnetic mineralogy, grain size and coercivity in the sediments. The rock magnetic parameters were compared with an alternative climatic record from the same core based on the faunal association of planktonic foraminifera. A significant correlation was found between faunal climatic record and χ fd . Together with the magnetic properties of the sediment this suggests that a palaeoclimatic signal is recorded by a fine-grained low-coercivity fraction of the magnetic minerals.  相似文献

The global changes of the past took place during the progress of geological cycles and marked a drastic passage from an ancient Pangaean regime of continental emergence to a new Tethyan regime of submergence. They occurred with a certain violence and rapidity, and represented critical phases in the destabilization and subsequent reorganization of the geosphere and biosphere. This process resulted in the destruction of certain assemblages (e.g. biotic mass extinctions) and the rise of new ones (e.g. the emergence of new taxa). These major phases of evolution and growth were probably connected to the upwelling of hot mantle material from great depths and a subsequent process of lateral spreading and outward migration of the mantle melt. The ensuing marked increase in mantle activity, degassing and explosive volcanicity produced catastrophic environmental perturbations with turning points in tectonics, global climate, sea level, ocean and atmospheric chemistry, palaeocirculation and palaeogeography.  相似文献

During the period from the mid 1950s to the 1960s it seemed as if the community of earth scientists was slowly being dragged toward accepting continental drift. But resistance was often steadfast. Each new ideal or set of data produced a trickle of new converts, but also generated heated debate. The concept of sea-floor spreading and the corollary hypothesis that the process of spreading would generate a set of symmetrical magnetic anomalies was particularly disputatious. Abstract

Agricultural land use in the area of water bodies is generally considered to increase the nutrient status of the water body water and sediments, but is this also the case for already nutrient-rich fish ponds? We studied 83 fish ponds in the Dombes region, France, where 1100 ponds are located in a heterogeneous agricultural landscape. Different water and sediment parameters were analysed for ponds and in ditches after rainfall events. Land use was studied in the primary catchment of ponds and in a 100-m zone around ponds. Soil parameters of different land-use types were analysed and farmers interviewed about agricultural practices. Increasing cropping area in the catchment of the ponds is significantly correlated to higher PO4 3- concentration of pond water and to a lower degree, also to NO3 ?, but only in certain years with higher rainfall and with a more uneven distribution in spring. Sediment parameters were not significantly influenced. High NO3- concentration in the water of a ditch during significant rainfall events was found for a cropland dominated catchment.

A 3.4 km-high, dome-shaped upland in eastern Tithonium Chasma (TC) coincides with areas containing abundant surface signatures of the sulphate mineral kiersite, as identified by the OMEGA image spectrometer. The dome has surface features on its summit, flanks, and at its base that were apparently formed by liquid water released from melting ice. These features include a variety of karst landforms as well as erosive and depositional landforms. The surface of the dome has few impact craters, which suggests a relatively young age for the dome. Rock layers in the dome are laterally continuous but are visibly deformed in some places. The mineralogical and structural characteristics of the dome suggest that it was emplaced as a diapir, similar to many salt diapirs on Earth.  相似文献
