A numerical study using a 3-D nonhydrostatic model has been applied to baroclinic processes generated by the K 1 tidal flow in and around the Kuril Straits. The result shows that large-amplitude unsteady lee waves are generated and cause intense diapycnal mixing all along the Kuril Island Chain to levels of a maximum diapycnal diffusivity exceeding 103 cm2s−1. Significant water transformation by the vigorous mixing in shallow regions produces the distinct density and potential vorticity (PV) fronts along the Island Chain. The pinched-off eddies that arise and move away from the fronts have the ability to transport a large amount of mixed water (∼14 Sv) to the offshore regions, roughly half being directed to the North Pacific. These features are consistent with recent satellite imagery and in-situ observations, suggesting that diapycnal mixing within the vicinity of the Kuril Islands has a greater impact than was previously supposed on the Okhotsk Sea and the North Pacific. To examine this influence of tidal processes at the Kurils on circulations in the neighboring two basins, another numerical experiment was conducted using an ocean general circulation model with inclusion of tidal mixing along the islands, which gives a better representation of the Okhotsk Sea Mode Water than in the case without the tidal mixing. This is mainly attributed to the added effect of a significant upward salt flux into the surface layer due to tidal mixing in the Kuril Straits, which is subsequently transported to the interior region of the Okhotsk Sea. With a saline flux into the surface layer, cooling in winter in the northern part of the Okhotsk Sea can produce heavier water and thus enhance subduction, which is capable of reproducing a realistic Okhotsk Sea Mode Water. The associated low PV flux from the Kuril Straits to the open North Pacific excites the 2nd baroclinic-mode Kelvin and Rossby waves in addition to the 1st mode. Interestingly, the meridional overturning in the North Pacific is strengthened as a result of the dynamical adjustment caused by these waves, leading to a more realistic reproduction of the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) than in the case without tidal mixing. Accordingly, the joint effect of tidally-induced transport and transformation dominating in the Kuril Straits and subsequent eddy-transport is considered to play an important role in the ventilation of both the Okhotsk Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. This article concerns an interrelation between the sea levels and the western boundary flow near a tectonic boundary in a local zone in the Northwestern Pacific. In this zone, sea level variations at stations located on the coast facing the Pacific are studied to find the interrelation between variations of the Kurosio flow as an index of the distance of the flow axis off a specific coast. The result is discussed after data processing of the monthly means of the sea levels, and a notice is taken of variations caused by active crustal upheavals during a seismic event, a local earthquake.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of210Pb and230Th in the deep water were analyzed by using a simple one-dimensional model. Both nuclides are considered to settle down with the velocity of 1×10–4 cm/sec. The diameter of particle corresponding to the velocity is calculated to be 5, while only about 10 % of the nuclides can be collected on filter paper with a pore size of 0.5. It is supposed that the nuclides exist in particulate materials which is changeable in size. This suggestion is supported from the following evidences. (1) The directly observed behavior of marine snow and the size distribution of particles observed with a coulter counter. (2) The existence of many chemical elements of which residence time is about 150 years. (3) Their possible existence as eutectic solid phases in the seawater. (4) The consistency of the observed accumulation rate of pelagic sediments with that estimated from the settling velocity. (5) The consistency of the decomposition rate of organic matter in the deep water estimated from the oxygen comsumption with that from the settling velocity.  相似文献

A crustal upheaval in a coastal zone is studied by introducing a simplified theoretical model of an equivalent elastic plate on which oceanic water is acting as a static loading. With a solution for the plate, the author notes what is seen as a crustal upheaval under the loading of static oceanic water in a qualitative scope. The solution requires some assumed parameters for the plate and the loading. Some other conditions should be also given to realize a possible dynamical understanding of a sea level rise seen after global climatological warming and glacial melting.  相似文献

A water mass characterized by the pycnostad on the bottom of the ventilated portion in the central subtropical North Pacific is described through the comparison with the Subtropical Mode Wate (STMW). In this paper, this water mass is called the North Pacific Central Mode Water (CMW), because of its vertical homogeneity. The distribution of CMW is examined based on the climatological maps of annual mean potential vorticity. On the other hand, its formation area is examined based on the climatological winter temperature data set and the STD sections across the Kuroshio Extension in early spring of individual years. The main results are summarized as follows: 1) STMW is formed in the deep winter mixed layer south of the main path of the Kuroshio Extension (termed 12°C Front in this paper). On the other hand, CMW is formed in the deep winter mixed layer in the east-west band surrounded by a branch of the Kuroshio Extension (termed 9°C Front in this paper) and the boundary of two water masses representing the subtropical and subpolar gyres. 2) The winter mixed layer between the 12°C Front and the 9°C Front is shallower than that in the CMW and STMW formation areas. 3) These geographical features of the winter mixed layer depths near the subarcticsubtropical transition zone result in two pycnostads (STMW and CMW) in the main thermocline of the subtropical North Pacific through the advection caused by the subtropical gyre.  相似文献

A method is described for the determination of Th isotopes (232Th,230Th,228Th and227Th) in seawater through analysis of Th adsorbed on MnO2-impregnated fiber that has been moored in the deep sea for up to 10 months. Since the MnO2-fiber adsorbs Th from seawater at a constant rate, natural234Th can be used as a yield monitor by making a correction for its decay during the period of deployment. The results obtained by the method showed good reproducibility and accuracy. The method has the advantage over the chemical coprecipitation method that the time and labor for sampling and processing a large-volume of seawater is reduced.  相似文献

Using the moored MnO2-fiber method, we have obtained 38 determinations of Th and Pa isotope concentrations from 18 sites along the margin of the western North Pacific near Japan, from water depths of 1,330 to 5,873 m. From our data, we are able to show that (1)228Ra and227Ac are being supplied to the seawater from the slope sediments of Honshu, Japan, (2) our230Th and231Pa concentrations match those obtained byin situ pumping with a MnO2-fiber adsorber in the Japan and Izu-Ogasawara trenches but are significantly higher than those from the Panama and Guatemala basins, and (3) our232Th concentrations show a similar systematic decrease with depth as do those of trace metals like Mn, Al, Te and Bi whose concentrations are strongly controlled by particulate matter scavenging.In contrast, our data fail to show (1) that enhanced removal of230Th and231Pa by scavenging from the water column is taking place near the western margins and (2) that231Pa is being removed in preference to230Th from the water column to the marginal sediments. This is probably due to rapid mixing of the deep waters as compared to the scavenging rates of230Th and231Pa in the water column and at the sediment/seawater interface.  相似文献

Habitat choice of reef fish larvae at settlement is one of the mechanisms proposed to explain spatial patterns in the distribution of fishes and the corresponding spatial structure of communities. Field experiments using Pomacentridae were conducted at Iriomote Island, southern Japan, in order to determine if rare recruitment of coral reef fishes in seagrass beds is due to larval settlement preference. When three types of natural patch treatments (branching coral patch, seagrass patch, and control without patches) were established in cleared seagrass squares in the center of a seagrass bed, four pomacentrid species, Amblyglyphidodon curacao, Dischistodus prosopotaenia, Cheiloprion labiatus, and Dascyllus aruanus, recruited exclusively onto the coral patches, indicating that larvae distributed in the seagrass bed may have preferred a coral rather than seagrass substrate as a settlement habitat. The effects of differences in physical shape (grid structure for branching coral vs. vertical structure for seagrass leaves) and rigidity (rigid substrate for coral vs. flexible substrate for seagrass) between coral and seagrass substrates on such recruitment patterns were investigated using artificial coral and seagrass units. When artificial habitat units with predator exclusion cages were established in the cleared seagrass squares as above, high densities of A. curacao and D. prosopotaenia recruits were observed on the rigid rather than flexible habitat units (both unit types having similar shape), whereas differences in recruit numbers of the two species were unclear in differently shaped units. These results demonstrated that even though pomacentrid larvae are distributed in the seagrass bed, they do not settle on the seagrass substrate owing to their habitat choice being partially based on a preference for substrate rigidity. Moreover, non-recruitment of C. labiatus and D. aruanus on artificial habitat units suggested that the presence of living coral substrates rather than physical shape/rigidity of substrates are an important cue for habitat choice of these fishes.  相似文献

Using manganese-impregnated fiber extraction and high-efficiency gamma counting techniques, we measured the distribution of 228Ra and 226Ra in surface waters near the coast of Japan and in the western North Pacific. There is no evidence in our data that any significant amount of 228Ra is added to open ocean surface waters from the coastal waters around Tokyo Bay. High 228Ra concentrations (> 10 dpm/103 kg), were observed along the Kuroshio Current as compared to < 2.5 dpm/103 kg between 10° and 30°N of the central gyre, and hence the major source of 228Ra in the surface water is likely to be the East Asian continental shelf zones. A simple one-dimensional eddy diffusion and advection model is used to explain the observed decrease of 228Ra from coast to the open ocean. The model results indicate two mixing regimes across the Kuroshio Current System with apparent eddy diffusion coefficients of Ky = 4 × 105 cm2 s−1 at distance y < 200 km from the coast, and Ky = 4 × 107 cm2 s−1 at y > 200 km. Along 40°N where an eastward flow of the ‘Kuroshio Extension’ prevails, an advective flow of > 0.1 knot is consistent with the observation of nearly constant 228Ra along the track.The geographical distribution pattern of 228Ra is clearly different from that of atmospherically derived 210Pb. Thus the 228Ra in surface water serves as a useful tracer that accompanies fluvially and coastally derived elements during their subsequent lateral transport toward the central gyre.  相似文献
