A comparative study of ecosystems and biogeochemistry at time-series stations in the subarctic gyre (K2) and subtropical region (S1) of the western North Pacific Ocean (K2S1 project) was conducted between 2010 and 2013 to collect essential data about the ecosystem and biological pump in each area and to provide a baseline of information for predicting changes in biologically mediated material cycles in the future. From seasonal chemical and biological observations, general oceanographic settings were verified and annual carbon budgets at both stations were determined. Annual mean of phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity at the oligotrophic station S1 were comparable to that at the eutrophic station K2. Based on chemical/physical observations and numerical simulations, the likely “missing nutrient source” was suggested to include regeneration, meso-scale eddy driven upwelling, meteorological events, and eolian inputs in addition to winter vertical mixing. Time-series observation of carbonate chemistry revealed that ocean acidification (OA) was ongoing at both stations, and that the rate of OA was faster at S1 than at K2 although OA at K2 is more critical for calcifying organisms. 相似文献

We suggest methods for the analysis of the spatial distribution of plant species in a research area divided into a quadrat lattice. In particular, information about the topography and the spaces without plants is used for the analysis. At sites with a homogeneous substratum, we classify the topography by whether a target grid is concave or convex with respect to a standard surface of altitude. At other sites, we classify the topography according to whether the grid is located at the edge of rock and/or at a water pool. Information about the topography and the plant existence is used for constructing 2 × 2 contingency tables. In order to determine the strength of dependence between the topography and plant existence, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) is used. Comet Kohoutek (1973f) has been observed photometrically and polarimetrically in the near-infrared region. The observed spectra revealed two components, scattered sunlight and thermal emission by dust particles. Color temperatures derived from intensities at 2.2 and 3.5 μm are close to the equilibrium temperature of a gray body with solar heating. Polarizations at 1.0 and 1.65 μm have been found to be ~15 to 20% and perpendicular to the tail direction. We analyzed Hg, Zn and Cu concentrations in the liver and muscle of tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) from the coast of Ishigaki Island, Japan. The Hg concentration in the muscle increased proportionally with body length in the tiger sharks, whereas that in the liver increased rapidly after maturity (defined by a length of over 2.7 m). Muscle Hg levels were higher than liver concentrations in immature sharks, with the inverse trend observed in mature sharks. Notably, the Zn and Cu concentrations in the liver tended to decrease with increasing body length. This rapid increase in hepatic Hg concentration concurrent with the onset of maturity in sharks may result from the continuous intake of Hg via food and the slower growth of mature sharks. The high concentrations of the essential metals Zn and Cu in immature sharks may be explained by the physiological demands related to rapid growth. 相似文献

Measurements of local values of the skin friction have been made at many points along the surface of representative wind wave crests in a wind wave tunnel, by use of the distortion of hydrogen-bubble lines. The results obtained at 2.85-m fetch under 6.2 m s–1 mean wind speed show that the intensity of the skin friction varies greatly along the surface of wind waves as a function of the phase angle. It increases rather continuously at the windward surface toward the crest, attains a value of about 12 dyn cm–2 near the crest, decreases suddenly just past the crest, and the value at the lee surface is substantially zero Values of the skin friction thus determined along the representative wind waves give an average value of 3.6 dyn cm–2, rather exceeding the overall stress value of 3.0 dyn cm–2, which has been estimated from the wind profile. For wind waves generated in a wind-wave tunnel, the surface pressure and also the pressure distribution along the internal streamlines were calculated from the measured internal velocity field. In distinct waves, with wave height comparable with or larger than the mean, the surface pressure is found to vary drastically in a narrow region around the crest, showing a dominant minimum near the crest. On the other hand, the pressure distribution along the streamline shows systematic variations that are nearly in phase with the streamline profile. It is shown that the occurrence of the pressure in phase with the streamline profile is linked with the internal vorticity distribution, especially with the presence of a high vorticity region below the crest described in Part I of this study. As a result of the occurrence of such pressure variations, the dispersion relation is modified by about 10% from that for linear irrotational waves. It is argued from the present measurements that the dispersion relation and also the energy transfer from wind into wind waves are strongly affected by the internal vortical structure so that the assumption of irrotational gravity waves cannot be applied to the wind waves being studied. 相似文献

In order to classify the growth form of corals, the following “growth form index” was defined to denote coral shape objectively: Growth Form Index=Coral Surface Area/ (Coral Wet Weight)2/3. On the basis of this index, growth forms of corals were classified into four major forms: massive, irregular shaped, branching, and highly branching. Coral-associated animals were classified into four groups according to their mode of living: freeliving epi-, sessile epi-, boring crypto-, and secondary crypto-bionts. For the quantitative study of the distribution of coral-associated animals in each growth form of coral and in each habitat of the study area, living coral heads were collected using SCUBA from 10 stations representing various habitats in Kabira Cove, Ishigaki Island, Yaéyama Group, Okinawa Prefecture. By comparing the proportions of four life forms of animals associated with each of the four different growth forms of corals at each station, some consistent patterns were found: massive corals were dominated by both boring and secondary cryptobionts, while branching and highly branching corals were dominated by free-living and sessile epibionts. In addition, the absolute numbers as well as the proportions of the four life forms of animals associated with a given growth form of coral changed from the outer-reef outside the bay to the bay head. From these various distribution patterns, it became clear that the growth forms of corals have a strong influence on the micro ecological distribution of coral-associated animals at each station, while the physical environment regulates the distribution of these animals in a given locality on the macroscopic scale. 相似文献

We compared the cutoff depth of seismicity in and around the Nojima fault broken by the 1995 Kobe earthquake occurring in intraplate Japan with the brittle–ductile transition depth of the widely accepted strength profile model of the crust. We successfully determined the temperature profile from borehole measurements, since almost the same geothermal gradients were observed at two boreholes located about 4 km apart from each other, and the thermal conductivity and heat production were also measured by taking numerous core samples. We found that the cutoff depth was much deeper than the transition depth under the assumption that wet granite is deformed at a strain rate of 3×10−15 s−1. This small strain rate implies, however, that plastic flow is uniformly distributed below the seismogenic region. When the strain rate is assumed to be greater than 10−13 s−1, the cutoff depth can be attributed to the transition depth. This suggests that deformation is localized in a narrow fault zone below the seismogenic region, even in the intraplate region. 相似文献
