Dissolved and total dissolvable manganese concentrations have been measured at four stations in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Total dissolvable manganese concentrations are high in surface waters, decrease to uniformly low levels throughout the bulk of the water column, and increase in the bottom nepheloid layer. Dissolved Mn (Mnd) concentrations follow the total dissolvable concentrations throughout the surface and deep waters but do not increase in the near-bottom waters.Deep water concentrations of Mnd decrease from 30 ng l?1 in the Newfoundland Basin to 20 ng l?1 in the Sargasso Sea. This change and other features of the deep water distribution of dissolved manganese could be associated with the slow oxidation of Mn2+ to MnO2. There is also evidence at one station of scavenging of manganese from the dissolved phase in the near-bottom layer which may again be related to the kinetics of manganese oxidation.  相似文献

New tectonic uplifts south of the Salt Range Thrust and Himalayan Front Thrust (HFT) represent an outward step of the plate boundary from the principal tectonic displacement zone into the Indo-Gangetic Plain. In Pakistan, the Lilla Anticline deforms fine-grained overbank deposits of the Jhelum River floodplain 15 km south of the Salt Range. The anticline is overpressured in Eocambrian non-marine strata. In northwest India south of Dehra Dun, the Piedmont Fault (PF) lies 15 km south of the HFT. Coalescing fans derived from the Himalaya form a piedmont (Old Piedmont Zone) 15–20 km wide east of the Yamuna River. This zone is uplifted as much as 15–20 m near the PF, and bedding is tilted 5–7° northeast. Holocene thermoluminescence-optically-stimulated luminescence dates for sediments in the Old Piedmont Zone suggest that the uplift rate might be as high as several mm/a. The Old Piedmont Zone is traced northwest 200 km and southeast another 200 km to the Nepal border. These structures, analogous to protothrusts in subduction zones, indicate that the Himalayan plate boundary is not a single structure but a series of structures across strike, including reactivated parts of the Main Boundary Thrust north of the range front, the HFT sensu stricto, and stepout structures on the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Displacement rates on all these structures must be added to determine the local India-Himalaya convergence rate.  相似文献

Surficial sediments and blue mussels were collected around the perimeter of Halifax Harbour. Samples were analysed for the levels and fingerprint of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). The objective was to explore the relationship between contaminant profiles in sediments and in mussels and to explore the possibility of deducing their sources, pattern of deposition and circulation in the harbour. Combustion derived compounds predominated in both sets of samples, with more variability observed in the level of petroleum derived hydrocarbons in mussel samples. Biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAF, dry/dry wt.) varied throughout the harbour, ranging from means of 0.006 to 1.26, where generally fluoranthene displayed the highest BSAF. Sediments and mussels give complementary views of the geographical distribution of contaminants, they reflect the state of benthic and pelagic habitats. Results observed for Halifax Harbour are discussed from the perspective of published data.  相似文献

The level of reactive mercury in pelagic waters near the Mid Atlantic Ridge, south of the Azores, and in the Sargasso Sea, north of Bermuda, was studied. The reactive Hg concentration in both locations was shown to be fairly uniform with depth at a level of 2.5 ± 0.5 pmol l−1. The profiles show no indication of a simple Hg-nutrient relationship. The deep water from the Famous area was also sampled and showed no elevated Hg levels.  相似文献

Distributions of cadmium, copper and nickel at four stations in the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean from 30 ° S to 34 ° N are described based on analytical results from three laboratories. The Cd and Ni profiles show nutrient-like distributions with concentrations in the deep waters increasing from north to south. Copper profiles all show gradual increases from surface to bottom with the highest concentrations occurring near bottom on the most northerly station.Variations in the deep-water Cd and Ni concentrations can be understood in terms of mixing of southern source waters with high concentrations with lower concentration northern source waters. The deep-water Cu distributions indicate a significant near-bottom source to the northern end of the section.Cadmium vs. phosphate relationships show features that result from both regeneration and mixing. Higher Cd:PO4 ratios are seen in the southern source waters than in the northern waters, thus discounting the suggestion that the inflection in the global Cd:PO4 relationship at PO4 ≈ 1.3 μM originates in the southern ocean. Differential regeneration of Cd and PO4 is seen through the equatorial oxygen minimum.  相似文献

The freshwater discharge from the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Hudson Bay accounts for more than 80% of the total freshwater discharge from eastern Canada and approximately 70% of the total discharge from the eastern seaboard of North America, from Baffin Island to Florida. If the Gulf of Mexico is included, the Gulf of St. Lawrence/Hudson Bay discharge is still more than half of the total. Both the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Hudson Bay have some distinctly estuarine characteristics and discharges of metals can be estimated using estuarine models. For Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, the distributions can be described by simple, highly significant relationships with salinity. These regressions can be used in conjunction with knowledge of water discharges to estimate net metal inputs to the North Atlantic from these two systems. Most of the discharge from the Gulf of St. Lawrence flows along the Scotian Shelf to the Gulf of Maine. Metal-salinity relationships can also be used to estimate metal transports through this region for some metals. The applicability of this estuarine model, however, tends to break down as the oceanography becomes more complex and metal distributions are determined more by oceanic rather than estuarine processes.  相似文献

Total dissolved chromium concentrations have been determined for four vertical profiles from Baffin Bay, the Labrador Sea and the northwest Atlantic Ocean. Chromium concentrations of 3.3 to 5.2 nM are found. While the vertical distribution of chromium in the study area is largely controlled by advective processes, the profiles show a small depletion in surface water with increase to a more constant level at depth. Surface depletion and correlations between chromium and nutrients indicate biogeochemical cycling of chromium. At one station, close to the Gibbs fracture zone, a distinct chromium maximum is observed. This feature centred at 3200 m is deeper than the core of the ambient water mass which is advected westward from the Eastern Basin of the Atlantic Ocean through the Gibbs fracture zone.  相似文献

Measurements of nutrients, dissolved oxygen and trace metals in bottom waters, taken just before the fall turnover, have been evaluated as indicators of eutrophication in inlets. Samples for these analyses were collected in 34 inlets in eastern Canada. The dominant factor (31% of the variance of the dataset) from a principal component analysis of the resulting data was clearly related to eutrophication. This factor included phosphate, ammonia, silicate, dissolved oxygen, iron and manganese, but not cadmium and zinc. It was used to rank inlets according to eutrophication. Comparisons of these rankings with measures of inlet shape revealed that several measures of the significance of sills were good predictors of the eutrophication status. Tidal prism flushing times, and other geometric measures, were poor predictors of eutrophication. Measures of anthropogenic inputs to the inlets were also poor predictors of the eutrophication status: apparently natural processes dominate anthropogenic inputs in these inlets.  相似文献

During the Cretaceous an andesitic arc developed across south Asia facing the Tethys Ocean. Remnants of this arc are preserved in Iran, Afghanistan, and the Chagai Hills and Kohistan, Pakistan. West of the Chaman fault near Spinatizha, Pakistan (33° 33′N, 66° 23′E) a terrain of crystalline rocks is exposed that links the Chagai Hills portion of this arc with the Kandahar portion of it in Afghanistan. Four units are present. (1) The Spinatizha Metamorphic Complex includes orthogneiss, greenschist, amphibolite, metavolcanics, marble and foliated muscovite granite. Extreme variation in rock type and degree of metamorphism characterises the entire complex. It is the oldest unit west of the Chaman fault in Pakistan. (2) The Bazai Ghar Volcanics consist of weakly deformed tuffs, flow breccias, and other coarse-grained pyroclastics of andesitic-arc type. Andesite flows and at least one silicic welded tuff are also present. The Bazai Ghar Volcanics are everywhere separated from the Spinatizha Metamorphic unit by granitic intrusions and a major fault. (3) Both the above units are intruded by a series of calc-alkaline granitic plutons ranging from diorite to granite. The silicic plutons generally intrude the more mafic ones. The Bazai Ghar Volcanics and related intrusions are probably equivalent to the Cretaceous (?) Sinjrani volcanics and the Cretaceous and younger intrusions of the Chagai Hills. (4) Along the fault zone between the volcanic and metamorphic rocks is a small area of previously unknown clastic sedimentary rocks: conglomerates and slates. The unit is of Palaeogene age but cannot yet be correlated with known units. The Spinatizha crystalline terrain extends south along the Chaman fault into Afghanistan and is covered by the Helmund desert to the west. It is the eastern continuation of the calc-alkaline arc terrain of the Chagai Hills dragged by oroclinal flexing into the Chaman transform zone. To the north it connects with the Kandahar volcanic arc. The metamorphic complex may represent the basement on which the arc terrain rests, only exposed due to strong vertical uplift near the Chaman fault.  相似文献
