Steel box columns are widely used in steel building structures in Taiwan due to their dual strong axes. To transfer the beam-end moment to the column, diaphragm plates of the same thickness and elevations as the beam flanges are usually welded inside the box column. The electro-slag welding (ESW) process is widely used to connect the diaphragms to the column flanges in Taiwan because of its convenience and efficiency. However, ESW may increase the hardness of the welds and heat-affected zones (HAZs), while reducing the Charpy-V notch strength in the HAZ. This situation can cause premature fracture of the diaphragm-to-column flange welds before a large plastic rotation is developed in the beam-to-box column joints. To quantify the critical eccentricity and the effectiveness of fracture prediction, this study uses fracture prediction models and finite element model (FEM) analysis to correlate the test results. In this study, two beam-to-box column connection subassembly tests are conducted with different loading protocols and ESW chamber shapes. To implement a fracture prediction model, the material parameters are established from circumferential notched tensile tests and FEM analysis. Test results indicate that the fracture instances can be predicted on the basis of the cumulative plastic deformation in the HAZs. Analytical results indicate that fracture instances and locations are sensitive to the relative locations of the ESW joints and beam flange. Tests also confirm that the possible fracture of the diaphragm-to-column flange joints can be mitigated by enlarging the chamber of the ESW joint. 相似文献

A new model to simulate spatially correlated earthquake ground motions is developed. In the model, the main factors that characterize three distinct effects of spatial variability, namely, the incoherency effect, the wave-passage effect and the site-response effect, are taken into account, and corresponding terms/parameters are incorporated into the well known model of uniform ground motions. Some of these terms/parameters can be determined by the root operation, and others can be calculated directly. The proposed model is fi rst verif ied theoretically, and examples of ground motion simulations are provided as a further illustration. It is proven that the ensemble expected value and the ensemble auto-/cross-spectral density functions of the simulated ground motions are identical to the target spectral density functions. In 1988 two large earthquakes with magnitude of Ms 7.6 and Ms 7.2 occurred in Lancang-Genma area, Southwest China. This paper discusses the determination of the spatial distribution of fault slip caused by the earthquakes using geodetic surveys. The prior information obtained from geological surveys and seismological investigations was used to determine the geometry of the fault plane and the average fault slip. The smooth constraints on the fault slips have been described by a normal distribution with hyperparameters, which are incorporated in the inversion analysis with a Bayesian model. Akaike’s Bayesian Information Criterion (ABIC) is used to get the optimal values of hyperparameters. Once the hyperparameters are determined, the maximum likelihood method is employed to estimate the patterns of a fault slip. Based on the results of inverse analysis monitoring geodetic surveys can be properly designed and conducted to obtain crust deformations and predict potential earthquake sources. 相似文献
