Phytoplankton pigment (chlorophylla+pheopigments) distributions in a regional upwelling around the Izu Peninsula obtained by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) on May 23, 1982, were compared with ship-observed pigment and satellite sea-surface-temperature distributions. Pigment concentrations detected by the CZCS were positively correlated with the ship-observed pigment concentrations. However, they were about factor of 5 smaller when atmospheric correction parameters known for typical oceanic and land aerosol were used and when the parameters were estimated with the clear water algorithm. When the atmospheric correction parameters were adjusted so that a pigment concentration derived by CZCS was equivalent to a concentration obtained by the ship at a coincide location, the pattern and magnitudes of the CZCS-derived pigment distributions showed remarkable agreement with ship-observed pigment distributions. Thus, the normal atmospheric correction algorithm may not be suitable for waters around Japan, and the development of better atmospheric correction methods combined with more verification programs is required. The pigment distributions showed patterns that were similar to those observed in sea-surface-temperature distributions. Cold water showed higher pigment concentrations, and warm water showed lower pigment concentrations. The Kuroshio, which can be identified by generally warm, low pigment water, showed a large meander which flowed offshore at Shiono-misaki, looped back onshore from Hachijo Island to Omaezaki and then flowed northeast along the Izu and Boso Peninsulas. Locally upwelled water along the Izu Peninsula was seen clearly in the sea-surface-temperature and CZCS pigment distributions as a region of cold water and high pigment concentrations. Cold upwelled waters were also found at the eastern side of the Izu Islands, but pigment concentrations in these waters was not always high. This difference in the two upwelling regions may be caused by different physical and biological interactions.  相似文献

Moored instrument observations in the Kuroshio south of Kyushu   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In each of the (fiscal) years 1979–1982, multilayer current measurements by means of moored instruments were carried out in the Kuroshio off Tanegashima Island, south of Kyushu, with particular interest in the baroclinic layer (0–1,000 m) of the intense current. Most of the moored instruments were in position for more than 30 days, the maximum duration being 145 days. This paper describes some noticeable features of the mean and fluctuation fields in the surface Kuroshio as inferred from the the new data sets.Vertical profiles of horizontal velocities show that the eastward current of the Kuroshio in the region is confined to the upper 600 m on average and below this level the mean current is directed to the southwest along the local isobaths. This is believed to be the first observation of the level of no motion in this region. It is argued that the indicated level of no motion would lead to much smaller values for the Kuroshio transport than previous values referred to the 1,000 m level — for example, earlier estimates by Nitani (1972).The fluctuation field in the upper intense current appears to be dominated by an organized motion with a time scale of about 30 days. This can be seen clearly in the time variations of water temperature and local volume transport, but less clearly in the velocity records. The horizontal transfer components of momentum and heat are calculated and it is suggested that the transverse momentum transfer, UV tends to be negative (offshore) in the region of anticyclonic shear of the upper Kuroshio; no evidence for a negative eddy viscosity effect is found.  相似文献

A recently proposed method for estimating nitrate and new production from remotely sensed data (Goes and Goes) allowed us to observe significant deviations from the normal in the quantum of winter-time nitrate injected into the euphotic column and its consumption by phytoplankton in the North Pacific following the El Niño event of 1997. Results from this study allowed us to observe large differences in the ways in which the El Niño event affected the western and the eastern margins of the North Pacific basin. For the western North Pacific, a long-term (1972–1992) historical record of oceanographic data provided us with clear evidence supporting of our findings from satellite observations. In the eastern North Pacific Ocean also, our results compared well with those previously reported (Wong, Whitney, Matear, & Iseki, 1998). While it is clear from this study that El Niño/La Niña oscillations can have a major influence on interannual variations in biological processes in the North Pacific, these results also serve to highlight the value of remote sensing as a tool for studying large regional to basin-scale biological oceanographic events.  相似文献

This study is an attempt to correlate the graphitization process of carbonaceous matter during metamorphism with metamorphic grade. Graphitization can be parameterized using crystal structure and chemical and isotopic compositions. The extent of graphitization could be characterized mainly by temperature, duration of metamorphism and rock composition. We compared the graphitization trends for two metamorphic terrains, a contact aureole of the Kasuga area and a regional metamorphic terrain of high-temperature/low pressure type of the Ryoke metamorphic terrain in Northern Kiso area, Central Japan, and for two different lithologies (carbonate and pelite), using X-ray diffractogram, DTA-TG analysis, and chemical and stable isotope analyses. During contact metamorphism, graphitization and carbon isotopic exchange reactions proceeded simultaneously in pelitic and carbonate rocks. The decreases in basal spacing d(002) of the carbonaceous matter in carbonate rocks is greatly accelerated at temperatures higher than about 400° C. Furthermore, carbon isotopic ratios of graphite in carbonate rocks also change to 13C-enriched values implying exchange with carbonates. The beginning of this enrichment of 13C in the carbonaceous matter coincides with an abrupt increase of the graphitization processes. Carbon isotopic shifting up to 5 in pelites could be observed as metamorphic temperature increased probably by about 400° C. Carbonaceous matter in pelitic rocks is sometimes a mixture of poorly crystallized organic matter and well-crystallized graphite detritus. DTA-TG analysis is an effective tool for the distinction of detrital graphitic material. Two sources for the original carbon isotopic composition of carbonaceous matter in pelites in the Kasuga contact aureole can be distinguished, about-28 and-24 regardless of the presence of detrital graphite, and were mainly controlled by depositional environment of the sediments. Graphitization in limestones and pelitic rocks in regional metamorphism proceeds further than in a contact aureole. In the low-temperature range, the differences in extent of graphitization between the two metamorphic regions is large. However, at temperatures higher than 600° C, the extent of graphitization in both regions is indistinguishable. The degree of graphitization is different in limestones and pelitic rocks from the Ryoke metamorphic terrain. We demonstrate that the graphitization involves a progressive re-construction process of the crystal structure. The sequence of the first appearance of crystal inter planar spacing correlates with the metamorphic grade and indicates the crystal growth of three-dimensional structured graphite.  相似文献

Organic carbon flux from eutrophicated Tokyo Bay to the Pacific Ocean is estimated as 260 ton C day–1 based on the horizontal gradient of COD and the dispersion coefficient at the bay mouth. Also, carbon flux from the air or from the open ocean to Tokyo Bay is estimated as 156 ton C day–1. If we suppose that five percent of the coastal seas in the world might be eutrophicated as Tokyo Bay and the organic carbon flux from the shelf to the open ocean in other coastal seas might be one third of that in Tokyo Bay, 1.12 G tons year–1 would be transported from the eutrophicated coastal seas to the open ocean and such carbon flux may account for the missing sink in the global carbon budget.  相似文献

This paper describes the characteristics of currents around Hokkaido using a current vector map compiled by chasing the displacement of sea marks on a pair of successive thermal infrared images taken from a satellite, NOAA-6. The points of some sea surface patterns showing distinctive features which can be commonly identified in both images are called Sea Marks≓. This sea mark chase method≓ has a great advantage over velocity measurements by boats or buoys, in that it gives a synoptic view of the velocity distribution over a broad sea area extending for some hundreds of miles on a short time scale of half a day.In order to investigate the current in the late fall of 1981, we used the data taken at 19:05 JST on 30 October and at 7:20 JST on 31 October. With these data taken with a 12 hr difference, the measurement accuracy of the speed of sea marks reached ±0.1 knot through geometrical correction. The velocity vectors of sea marks agreed with results of GEK measurements performed on those days, and also with the mean current pattern obtained in the past based on sea surface data.The most distinct features recognized were some cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies of the order of 100 km in diameter which dominated in the Kuril Basin of the Okhotsk Sea. They appeared clearly in the original NOAA images and their physical parameters were determined quantitatively from the vector map. These eddies were located in the region of decay of the Soya Warm Current and were rotating at a speed nearly as large as that of the current. The problems of what feeds energy to these eddies and how long they live remain to be solved in future studies.  相似文献

A profiling float equipped with a fluorimeter, a dissolved oxygen (DO) sensor, and temperature and salinity sensors was deployed in the subtropical mode water (STMW) formation region of the North Pacific. It acquired quasi-Lagrangian, 5-day-interval time-series records from March to July 2006. The time-series distribution of chlorophyll showed a sustained and sizable subsurface maximum at 50–100 m, just above the upper boundary of the STMW, throughout early summer (May–July). The DO concentration in this lower euphotic zone (50–100 m) was almost constant and supersaturated in the same period, becoming more supersaturated with time. On the other hand, the DO concentration at 100–150 m near the upper boundary of the STMW decreased much more slowly compared with the main layer of STMW below 150 m, even though oxygen consumption by organisms was expected to be larger in the former depth range. The small temporal variations of DO in the lower euphotic zone and near the upper boundary of the STMW were reasonably explained by downward oxygen transport because of large diapycnal diffusion near the top of the STMW. Assuming that the oxygen consumption rate at 100–150 m was the same as that in the main layer of STMW and compensated by the downward oxygen flux, the diapycnal diffusivity was estimated to be 1.7 × 10−4 m2 s−1. Nitrate transport into the euphotic zone by the same large diffusion was estimated to be 0.8 mmol N m−2 day−1. All of the transported nitrate could have been used for photosynthesis by the phytoplankton; net community production was estimated to be 5.3 mmol C m−2 day−1.  相似文献

Summary. The three-dimensional (3-D) shear wave structure of the mantle, down to the depth of about 900 km, is obtained by inverting waveforms of radial component seismograms. Radial component seismograms contain large amplitude overtone signals which circle the Earth as wave packets and are sometimes called X1, X2, X3, … We use data which contain R1, X1 and X2 and filtered between 2 and 10mHz. It is shown that, unless each seismogram is weighted, all seismograms are not fitted uniformly. Only data from large earthquakes are fitted and the final velocity anomalies are biased by the small number of large earthquake data. Resolution is good at shallow depths, becomes worse in the intermediate depth range between about 400 and 500 km and then becomes better at greater depth ranges (600–900km). Even though we use only spheroidal mode data, velocity anomalies in the shallow structure show excellent correlation with the age of the surface rocks of the Earth. In the deeper regions, between about 600 and 900km, South America shows a fast velocity anomaly which may indicate the slab penetration beyond 700 km there. Another region which shows a fast velocity anomaly is the Mariana trench, but other subduction regions do not show such features.  相似文献
