The recently deglaciated environments in maritime permafrost regions are usually affected by very active paraglacial processes. Elephant Point is an ice‐free area of 1.16 km2 located in the SW of Livingston island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica). Between 1956–2010 the retreat of the ice cap covering most part of this island has exposed 17.3% of the land surface in this peninsula. Two geomorphological units were identified in this new ice‐free area: a moraine extending from the western to the eastern coastlines and a relatively flat proglacial surface. The glacier in 1956 sat in contact with the northern slope of the moraine, but its accelerated retreat ‐ in parallel to the warming trend recorded in the Antarctic Peninsula ‐ left these areas free of glacier ice. Subsequently, the postglacial evolution was controlled by the relaxation phase typical of paraglacial systems. The typology and intensity of geomorphological processes show a significantly different dynamics between the southern and northern slopes of the moraine. This pattern is related to the different stage of paraglacial adjustment in both slopes. In the southern side, on coarser sediments, pronival ramparts, debris flows and alluvial fans are distributed, with a low to moderate activity of slope processes. In the northern side, mass wasting processes are extremely active on fine‐grained unconsolidated sediments. Ice‐rich permafrost is being degraded by thermokarst processes. Landslides and mudflows transfer large amounts of sediments down‐slope. The surface affected by retrogressive‐thaw slumps in the moraine has been quantified in 24,172 m2, which accounts for 9.6% of its surface. The abundance of kettle‐lakes is also indicative of the degradation of the ground ice. Paraglacial processes are expected to continue in the moraine and proglacial area in the near future, although their intensity and duration will depend on the magnitude and rate of future climate trends in the northern Antarctic Peninsula. We present initial results from a study of a sample of low-perihelion near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. The 7–14 μm thermal emission spectra have been fitted with models of the thermal continuum to derive the asteroid’s effective diameter, geometric albedo and beaming parameter η. In this work, we concentrate on the thermal behavior and we find a trend of increasing η (lower thermal fluxes and cooler color temperatures) with increasing solar phase angle. The slope of this trend is somewhat different from that reported for other NEAs (e.g., Delbó 2004); if confirmed, this result would indicate that the thermal behavior of low-perihelion asteroids is different from that of other members of the NEA population. In addition, deviations of the observed continuum from the thermal model, which can be diagnostic of composition, are apparent in a few of our targets. A complete characterization of these intrinsically faint objects will benefit from the large ground based facilities described elsewhere in these proceedings. 相似文献

This paper presents an approach conducive to an evaluation of the probability density function (pdf) of spatio-temporal distributions
of concentrations of reactive solutes (and associated reaction rates) evolving in a randomly heterogeneous aquifer. Most existing
approaches to solute transport in heterogeneous media focus on providing expressions for space–time moments of concentrations.
In general, only low order moments (unconditional or conditional mean and covariance) are computed. In some cases, this allows
for obtaining a confidence interval associated with predictions of local concentrations. Common applications, such as risk
assessment and vulnerability practices, require the assessment of extreme (low or high) concentration values. We start from
the well-known approach of deconstructing the reactive transport problem into the analysis of a conservative transport process
followed by speciation to (a) provide a partial differential equation (PDE) for the (conditional) pdf of conservative aqueous
species, and (b) derive expressions for the pdf of reactive species and the associated reaction rate. When transport at the
local scale is described by an Advection Dispersion Equation (ADE), the equation satisfied by the pdf of conservative species
is non-local in space and time. It is similar to an ADE and includes an additional source term. The latter involves the contribution
of dilution effects that counteract dispersive fluxes. In general, the PDE we provide must be solved numerically, in a Monte
Carlo framework. In some cases, an approximation can be obtained through suitable localization of the governing equation.
We illustrate the methodology to depict key features of transport in randomly stratified media in the absence of transverse
dispersion effects. In this case, all the pdfs can be explicitly obtained, and their evolution with space and time is discussed. 相似文献

Although the Laguna de Mar Chiquita is among the largest saline lakes of the world (2,000–6,000 km2 area), knowledge about it is scarce. Like other large salt lakes, Mar Chiquita undergoes strong inter-annual changes in water level that are primarily linked to the variable expression of three different types of climate throughout its extensive catchment area. Water-level fluctuations and their overall environmental influence, especially on salinity (25–360 g L–1) and biota, have significant results. Comparison of Mar Chiquita with other fluctuating large salt lakes shows an independent long-term pattern of water-level (and salinity) changes. Primary determinants of its limnology are (1) its extensive catchment, (2) the occurrence of three different types of climate on the catchment, (3) the shallowness of the basin and (4) the effects of strong wind, water circulation within the lake, and sediment inputs from rivers. The effects of fluctuation on the lake biota are more evident at the level of dominant organisms at every fluctuation stage and their functions than in overall biodiversity and food-web complexity. 相似文献

Length-of-day (LOD) estimates from seven Global Positioning System (GPS) and three satellite laser ranging (SLR) analysis
centers were combined into an even-spaced time series for a 27-month period (1996–1998). This time series was compared to
the multi-technique Earth-orientation-parameter (EOP) combined solution (C04) derived at the Central Bureau of the International
Earth Rotation Service (IERS/CB). Due to inhomogeneities in the different series derived from the various techniques (time,
length, quality, and spatial resolution), the concept of a combined solution is justified. The noise behavior in LOD for different
techniques varies with frequency; the data series were divided into frequency windows after removing both biases and trends.
Different weight factors were assigned in each window, discriminating by technique, and produced one-technique combined solutions.
Finally, these one-technique combined solutions were combined to obtain the final multi-technique solution. The LOD combined
time series obtained by the present method based on the frequency windows combined series (FWCS) is very close to the IERS
C04 solution. It could be useful to generate a new LOD reference time series to be used in the study of high-frequency variations
of Earth rotation.

Mineralogical, textural and geochemical investigations were made to determine the post-depositional evolution of Devonian and Early Carboniferous carbonates from Valle de Tena. The carbonate association is made up of low-Mg calcite, which occurs as micrite, spar cements, neomorphic patches and spar filling veinlets. Non-stoichiometric dolomite and ankerite occur as cements (dolomite also as replacements) in the Middle Devonian, post-dating calcite types. All these phases pre-date tectonic stylolites, indicating compaction after stabilization of the carbonate minerals. Strontium concentrations indicate that Early Devonian and Early Carboniferous micrites initially precipitated as aragonite; Middle and Late Devonian micrites precipitated as high-Mg calcites. Both precursors were diagenetically stabilized to low-Mg calcites through interaction with meteoric waters in phreatic environments. Trace elements in dolomite and ankerite indicate precipitation from Sr-enriched meteoric water. All studied carbonates, except Middle Devonian limestones, precipitated in reducing environments, which favoured incorporation of Fe and Mn. Late calcite generations precipitated from more saline waters than micrites. Light 18O values in micrites suggest alteration mainly in meteoric-phreatic environments. The dolomites and ankerites precipitated from more 18O-depleted fluids than the calcites, suggesting a greater contribution from meteoric waters. Variations in 13C of micrites represent primary secular trends, according to published 13C variations. The 13C oscillations within each succession probably relate to sea-level oscillations. Strontium isotopes also point to a meteoric origin of diagenetic fluids. Model calculations suggest that O and Sr isotopes equilibrated between calcites and fluid at relatively low water/rock ratios, whereas C isotopic signatures are inherited from limestones. 相似文献
