Between September 1981 and March 1982 many Pc5 micropulsation events have been observed by the Wick component of the new SABRE auroral radar. A feature of these observations is that in addition to the characteristic poleward drifting regions of radar backscatter, equatorward moving regions are frequently observed. A consistent diurnal pattern in the direction of drift emerges from a statistical analysis of the data. 相似文献

The first fossil echinoids are recorded from the Cayman Islands. A regular echinoid, Arbacia? sp., the spatangoids Brissus sp. cf. B. oblongus Wright and Schizaster sp. cf. S. americanus (Clark), and the clypeasteroid Clypeaster sp. are from the Middle Miocene Cayman Formation. Test fragments of the mellitid clypeasteroid, Leodia sexiesperforata (Leske), are from the Late Pleistocene Ironshore Formation. Miocene echinoids are preserved as (mainly internal) moulds; hence, all species are left in open nomenclature because of uncertainties regarding test architecture. All Miocene taxa are recorded from single specimens apart from the 27 assigned to Brissus. Schizaster sp. cf. S. americanus (Clark) is compared to a species from the Oligocene of the south‐east USA. Brissus sp. cf. B. oblongus is close in gross morphology to a taxon from the Miocene of Malta. Leodia sexiesperforata is identified from fragments with confidence, being the only extant Antillean sand dollar with elongate ambulacral petals that is limited to carbonate substrates. The Miocene echinoids of Grand Cayman, although of limited diversity, are mainly comprised of genera common in comparable mid‐Cenozoic carbonate environments. Electrochemical aspects of grinding media-mineral interactions in magnetite ore grinding are illustrated from the viewpoint of corrosive wear of grinding balls and changes in the surface properties of the ground minerals. The corrosive wear of mild steel and HCLA steel was found to be small in contact with magnetite, while the combined presence of pyrrhotite and oxygen accelerated the corrosion of the above ball materials. Austenitic stainless steel exhibited passive behavior under all the above conditions. Galvanic coupling of mild steel with magnetite or pyrrhotite resulted in the formation of a surface reaction product consisting of iron hydroxide species on the mineral. 相似文献

Because it is based on an initial seismic analysis and preset criteria, tsunami forecast often fails in assessment of tsunami danger. The level of danger can be determined more or less reliably only when observed sea level data became available. Along with the sea level data, i.e., vertical motions of free water surface, we suggest considering horizontal motions of water that accompany the formation and the propagation of a tsunami. The amplitude of horizontal motions is normally much higher than the amplitude of the vertical motions. Detection of the horizontal motions may provide tsunami warning centers with additional in situ data that can be used for estimation of tsunami strength. In this study, taking the 2011 Tohoku-Oki event as an example, horizontal motions of water in the vicinity of the tsunami source are theoretically examined by means of dynamic and static numerical models developed within the framework of linear shallow-water approximation. It is shown that in the vicinity of the tsunami source within a wide area of about 0.5 million square kilometers, the amplitude of horizontal motions exceeded 10 m, whereas in some shallow-water areas the amplitude amounted to hundreds of meters. Possible methods of in situ detection of the horizontal motions are discussed. 相似文献

Important mafic–ultramafic masses have been located for the first time in the intersection area between the Keraf Shear Zone and the Nakasib Suture Zone of the Nubian Shield. The masses, comprising most of the members of the ophiolite suite, are Sotrebab and Qurun complexes east of the Nile, and Fadllab complex west of the Nile. The new mafic–ultramafic masses are located on the same trend of the ophiolitic masses decorating the Nakasib Suture. A typical complete ophiolite sequence has not been observed in these complexes, nevertheless, the mafic–ultramafic rocks comprise basal unit of serpentinite and talc chlorite schists overlain by a thick cumulate facies of peridotites, pyroxenites and layered gabbros overlain by basaltic pillow lavas with dolerite dykes and screens of massive gabbros. Associated with pillow lavas are thin layers of carbonates and chert. The best section of cumulate mafic–ultramafic units has been observed in Jebel Qurun and El Fadlab complexes, comprising peridotites, pyroxenites and layered gabbros. Dolerite dykes and screens of massive gabbros have been observed with basaltic pillow lava sections in Wadi Dar Tawaiy. The basal ultramafic units of the complexes have been fully or partly retrograded to chlorite magnetite schist and talc to talc-carbonate rocks (listowenites), especially in the Jebel Qurun and Sotrebab complexes. Petrographically, the gabbros (layered and massive) and the basaltic pillow lavas show mineral assemblages of epidote amphibolite facies. The mafic members from the three complexes show a clear tholeiitic trend and oceanic floor affinity. The pillow lavas plot in the field of oceanic floor basalt, namely in the back arc field. Primitive mantle normalized spider diagram of the pillow lavas reveals a closer correspondence to Enrich-Mid-Oceanic Ridge Basalt (E-MORB) type, which is confirmed by the flat chondrite normalized Rare Earth Elements (REE) pattern. Field, petrographical and geochemical evidence supports ophiolitic origin of the three complexes. The newly discovered ophiolitic complexes mark the western continuation of the Nakasib Suture Zone. 相似文献

Here we present a multi-proxy paleolimnological record from a closed-basin lake (Ebinur Lake) in northwestern China to investigate
climate change in this arid region during the last 1,500 years. The 120-cm long sediment core was dated by AMS radiocarbon
and 210Pb methods. The fine-grained clay sediments contain 3–17% organic matter (OM) and 9–31% carbonate, and are interrupted by
multiple sand and silt layers. These sand/silt layers, having consistently low OM, were found at 700–800, 1000–1100, 1300–1400,
and 1700–1750 a.d., with a time spacing of 300–400 years. We interpret that the low OM sand/silt layers were deposited during higher lake levels
caused by increased river inflow from the surrounding mountains during wet climate intervals. This interpretation is supported
by concurrent decreases in δ
18O and δ
13C of bulk carbonate and in carbonate content. Wet climate intervals at 700–800 a.d. and at 1700–1750 a.d. also correlate with elevated snow accumulation and low δ
18O from Guliya ice core on the NW Tibetan Plateau, both regions strongly influenced by the westerlies. This approximate 400-year
periodicity of wet–dry climate oscillations appear to correlate with solar activity as shown by atmosphere 14C concentration and with paleo-moisture records in interior North America. Our results suggest that solar activities might
have played a significant role in driving wet–dry climate oscillations at centennial scales in the interior of Eurasian continent. 相似文献
