Chromospheric flares are the footpoints of closed coronal field lines. In this paper we present different flare morphologies from observations and examine the implied coronal field configurations above the flaring region. Flares are grouped according to the number of ribbons, from unresolved compact point-like flare to four-ribbon flares. Quiet region flares having characteristics all their own are also presented here.We find that compact, unresolved point-like flares have two distinct footpoints when viewed in offband H. The footpoints of some of the compact flares also show increased separation as a function of time.Unlike large two-ribbon flares, the ribbons of many small and/or short-lived two-ribbon flares usually have no measurable separation of ribbons.Multiple-ribbon (three or more ribbon) flares consist of two or more pairs of two-ribbons, or two or more sets of field lines. Parity of the ribbons in multiple-ribbon flares, or the lack of it, depends on the magnetic makeup of the locale of the ribbons.Flares in old quiet regions resulting from sudden filament eruptions show discrete small patches of emissions reflecting the spottiness of decayed and dispersed field of quiet region. 相似文献

Climate change is anticipated to influence all parts of agricultural production systems. However, the potential impacts on crop storage have rarely been assessed, even though storage is an important component of a grower’s marketing strategy and is essential for the continuous supply of a commodity for processors, exporters, and consumers. The Michigan chip-processing potato industry provides an example of the importance of crop storage. Michigan is the largest producer of chip-processing potatoes in the USA, and potatoes are stored on farms from September to June. We use an ensemble of climate projections developed for three future time slices (early, mid, and late century) from 16 climate models forced by three greenhouse gas concentration pathways to assess future changes in potato storage conditions. Our findings indicate an increased future demand for ventilation and/or refrigeration immediately after harvest and again in spring and early summer, even for the early-century time slice. Furthermore, the period of reliably cold storage temperatures during winter is anticipated, when averaged across all models, to shorten by 11–17 days in Michigan’s primary production area and 14–20 days in the more southern secondary area by mid-century, and by 15–29 days and 31–35 days, respectively, for the northern and southern production areas by late century. The level of uncertainty, as indicated by the ensemble range, is large, although the sign of the projected changes in storage parameters is consistent. This case study provides an example of the potentially large effects of climate change on the storage conditions for agricultural commodities. 相似文献

This study investigates the spatial and temporal variability of global stratospheric gravity waves (GWs) and the characteristics of GW activity during sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) using the GPS radio occultation measurements from the COSMIC mission during September 2006 to May 2013. Corresponding to the COSMIC RO observational window and analysis method, GW potential energy (Ep) with vertical scales no shorter than ~2 km is resolved. It is found that the distributions of GW Ep over 20-30 km and 30-38 km show similar spatial and seasonal variations. The variations of GW Ep with altitude and latitude along the westerly wind are identified in different seasons over 60°-80°W. In the middle and high latitudes, seasonal cycles are distinct in the time-latitude and time-altitude distributions of GW activities, which show larger Ep in winters when westerly wind dominates and smaller Ep in summers when easterly wind dominates. The influence of quasi-biennial oscillation on GW activity is recognized in the tropics. GW Ep enhances closely following the occurrence of minor SSW events; while during major events, GW Ep may not enhance, and sometimes may even weaken, in the regions where reversals of zonal wind occur, probably caused by the filtering impact of the 0 m s-1 wind level on the GWs. 相似文献

利用1981—2020年沂沭河流域内12个气象台站逐日降水观测资料,西太平洋副热带高压(西太副高)指数、太平洋年代际振荡指数(PDO)等资料以及NCEP/NCAR逐日再分析资料,采用线性趋势分析、累积距平法联合滑动t检验、morlet小波分析、相关性分析、合成分析等方法,研究近40 a沂沭河流域极端降水事件的时空变化特征,并进一步研究极端降水指数与气候因子之间的相关性以及极端降水事件的异常环流背景。结果表明:沂沭河流域极端降水事件具有整体上增多且强度增强的特征,且近年来在频次和年极端降水量上波动峰间值增大,分别为6.2 d/a、538.2 mm/a,极端降水事件日趋严重。空间分布上南多北少,中部、北部较南部增速更明显。极端降水频次和年极端降水量均在1989年和2002年左右突增;极端降水强度在1989年突增,2000年左右突减。极端降水的频次、强度和年极端降水量分别以22 a、10 a和22 a的周期波动为主。西太副高的脊线位置跟频次和年极端降水量具有正相关性,PDO与频次和年极端降水量具有负相关性。东亚夏季风强度和西太副高的位置是影响沂沭河流域极端降水事件多寡的重要因子,在预测该流域的极端降水情况时可做参考依据。 相似文献

Resting cysts play crucial roles in the ecology of dino?agellates, especially in wintering or surviving unfavorable conditions, seeding harmful algal blooms(HABs), and facilitating the geographic expansion. Encystment of dino?agellates is tightly coupled with sexual reproduction in most cases, which can occur either through homothallism(self-fertilization) or heterothallism(intercrossing of +/-strains). The types of sexual reproduction have important ecological implications. The toxic and HAB-forming dino?agellate, Pheopolykrikoides hartmannii has been previously reported to be heterothallic. Here, we provide visual con?rmation of homothally of P. hartmannii and the ?rst detailed visual recording of cyst germination based on the observations of a clonal isolate from Jiaozhou Bay, China. To document the homothallism, we ?rst observed cell pairs in sexual mating, planozygotes with two longitudinal ?agella, and cysts with typical morphology as described previously from the clonal culture. We then germinated a single cyst, established a new clonal culture from one of the two daughter cells after the ?rst cell division of the germling(i.e. from the diploid germling to two haploid cells), and produced cysts again from the newly established clonal culture. For the observation of the germination time-series, we took micrographs and videos to show all germination processes, particularly with an interesting observation of the short amoeboid stage of the germling releasing from the archeopyle(~15 s), which was a landmark of the germination process and has not been reported elsewhere. This de?nitive evidence of homothallic sexuality and cyst production in P. hartmannii provides a new insight into the biology and ecology of the species, particularly a mechanism that may partly account for the population dynamics and ubiquitous distribution of the species. 相似文献

Detrital sediments derived from the Philippine Islands are one of the main sources of deep-sea sediments in the western Philippine Sea.However,systematic research on their characteristics and transport mechanisms are lacking.We used parametric end-member analysis to quantitatively partition the grain size of detrital sediments in core MD06-3052 from the Bicol Shelf in the western Philippine Sea;three endmembers EMI,EM2,and EM3,whose respective modes were at 2,10,and 45 μm,were separated.We also measured the Sr and Nd isotopic compositions of different size fractions(4 and 20 μm) of the detrital sediments and the results showed that the detrital sediments mainly originate from the Philippine Islands.Components EMI and EM2 are transported to the Bicol Shelf mainly by surface and bottom currents from the islands,and component EM3 is delivered by gravity flow from the exposed shelf during low sea-level stands.The content of the total detrital fraction and the three end-members,as well as the mass accumulation rates(MARs) of the coarse detritus(EM2 and EM3),were considerably higher during glacial periods(40-14 ka and 150-130 ka) than during other intervals;the glacials corresponded to a low sea level,while the MAR of the fine detritus(EMI) did not increase remarkably during 40-14 ka.We therefore concluded that the input of coarse detritus to the Bicol Shelf from the islands was mainly controlled by sea-level change.Variations of the input of fine-grained detritus(EM1) was influenced not only by sea level but also by ocean currents and regional precipitation.Overall,our results help understand "source-to-sink" processes in the western Pacific marginal seas and their response to global change. 相似文献

Northeast Sichuan basin is a Mesozoic-Cenozoic basin in the northern margin of the Yangtze plate which has a complex tectonic
background and hydrocarbon accumulation history. By means of the analysis method of wave processes, major cycles of sedimentary
wave process in this basin have been studied. The results show that there are five-order cycles corresponding to 760, 220,
100, 35 and 20 Ma respectively, two first-order sedimentary cycles (220 Ma) and four secondorder sedimentary cycles (100 Ma).
The authors find that the second-order sedimentary cycles are well matched with reservoir formation cycles through studying
the relationship between second-order sedimentary cycles and reservoir formation cycles, and divide three reservoir formation
cycles in this basin.

The abiotic, thermochemically controlled reduction of sulfate to hydrogen sulfide coupled with the oxidation of hydrocarbons, is termed thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR), and is an important alteration process that affects petroleum accumulations in nature. Although TSR is commonly observed in high-temperature carbonate reservoirs, it has proven difficult to simulate in the laboratory under conditions resembling nature. The present study was designed to evaluate the relative reactivities of various sulfate species in order to provide greater insight into the mechanism of TSR and potentially to fill the gap between laboratory experimental data and geological observations. Accordingly, quantum mechanics density functional theory (DFT) was used to determine the activation energy required to reach a potential transition state for various aqueous systems involving simple hydrocarbons and different sulfate species. The entire reaction process that results in the reduction of sulfate to sulfide is far too complex to be modeled entirely; therefore, we examined what is believed to be the rate limiting step, namely, the reduction of sulfate S(VI) to sulfite S(IV). The results of the study show that water-solvated sulfate anions are very stable due to their symmetrical molecular structure and spherical electronic distributions. Consequently, in the absence of catalysis, the reactivity of is expected to be extremely low. However, both the protonation of sulfate to form bisulfate anions () and the formation of metal-sulfate contact ion-pairs could effectively destabilize the sulfate molecular structure, thereby making it more reactive.Previous reports of experimental simulations of TSR generally have involved the use of acidic solutions that contain elevated concentrations of relative to . However, in formation waters typically encountered in petroleum reservoirs, the concentration of is likely to be significantly lower than the levels used in the laboratory, with most of the dissolved sulfate occurring as , aqueous calcium sulfate ([CaSO4](aq)), and aqueous magnesium sulfate ([MgSO4](aq)). Our calculations indicate that TSR reactions that occur in natural environments are most likely to involve bisulfate ions () and/or magnesium sulfate contact ion-pairs ([MgSO4]CIP) rather than ‘free’ sulfate ions () or solvated sulfate ion-pairs, and that water chemistry likely plays a significant role in controlling the rate of TSR. 相似文献
